It's best if you are a sole owner on a vehicle title to designate a beneficiary of title in advance of your death. Super simple..download and complete the form, have it notarized and staplev to your title. This makes it easy for your beneficiary to transfer the title/ownership of your vehicle when you pass.

In New York you need to show proof of insurance coverage before you can transfer the vehicle to a legatee's name. So before you go to the DMV, call the insurance carrier. They will make the switch effective the day you go, otherwise you need to carry both policies parallel until the registration has been effectively transferred. Also, the transfer works if the vehicle is worth $25,000 or less. If it's worth more, the process gets more complicated.

Can UTMAs be used to receive direct deposits from let's say Social Security? Reason I ask. When I start drawing SS, my child will be 11. If not, I guess a normal joint account could be opened for the child, then we just transfer each month that SS direct deposit. Hope this makes sense.
