Herb's Vintage Tech
Добавлен 6 май 2023
Welcome to Herb's Vintage Tech. On this channel I would like to chat about vintage technology like older digital cameras, computers and software. I will mainly present photography related content as I want to share my 30 year old love affair with old fashioned pre-smartphone photography.
Yet, once in a while I will talk about older computer technology and how we can use it today. I will also take a look how ancient people used surprisingly advanced technology.

Ep. 5 - Why use Vintage Tech Today?
Просмотров 71110 месяцев назад
Why would anybody use vintage technology today? Newer is always better, isn't it? In times of high cost of living and inflation many people might have to rethink the high cost of new technology. This is a short video of my take on it.

Ep. 1 - A rare look into a camera store from 2008. Vintage cameras!
Просмотров 380Год назад
For two years (2007 to 2009) I was working for a national photographic retailer in Canada as a store manager and camera instructor. I recently found some old test photos I took to evaluate a lens during this time. I recently found these photos and thought it would be interesting for you to see a pre-smartphone-photography era camera store and it's camera selection that is defunct for many years...

The first video of my channel! Welcome to Herb's Vintage Tech. I hope you will enjoy many videos to come, when we chat about vintage digital cameras, computers and software.
Is the D40 already considered "vintage"? I bought mine in late 2009, so that's only 15 years ago. I agree with you, it is a great camera though. I haven't used mine in a few years (mainly due to The Event that must not be named) and the other day I discovered that both of my batteries had given up the ghost. I was worried for a moment - but it appears that many manufacturers are still making these batteries so I bought a Duracell brand replacement. I'm going to have to re-learn what I've forgotten about photography now :)
I am looking for a K100D Super as my very own christmas gift. And this amazing video just makes me even more sure that its a right camera for me
Very well explained! Thank you for this 🙏🏻
You are welcome! Thanks for watching my video :)
Yes it is, 1/500s of X-sync, 2.5" screen and 6MP sensor All of it inside an "entry level" camera The only downside of this dslr that it isn't support AFD lenses that is cheaper than AFS counterpart
Ive just bought Nikon D200, love Nikon's dslrs
This was brilliant. Thanks. Yesterday I took some photos on my GR111x and somehow I managed to crop my image - so I thought I’d try and find out what happened on You Tube. Luckily I came across this perfect explanation. Thanks
I am getting a magenta cast when shooting black clothing on my D40, in both daylight and studio using flash. Have you experienced this, and what is the solution to get proper blacks?
Have you done a proper white balance with e.g. a grey card? Are you shooting RAW or jpgs?
Yes, I have done a preset white balance, and tried adjusting levels in custom optimize image and preset white balance. This has improved it a little, but not totally. I only shoot in JPEG, but will try JPEG/Raw and see if there is a difference. If not, I fear it’s just the sensor deteriorating given its age, so may have to just use it for shooting in black and white.
Update. I tested on JPEG/raw and they were almost identical, with only a very slight difference visible on the histogram
@@duncanthorn6338 I have not experienced any deterioration of the sensors of my 6mp APS-C cameras. I have also not seen any magenta casts in the shadows. It's possible of course. I have seen a sun damaged sensor once. I would think that if the sensor is deteriorating, it would affect not only the shadows. I would try to shoot raw and see if you can adjust the white balance manually. If you would like to send me a sample image, I could take a look. www.delmundoimages.com
I think you missed one significant light metering feature in the D40 when in manual mode...or at least it exists on my D40x though I expect D40 as well. The internal light meter still operates in manual mode so an external one is not needed nor is the photo trick. When in manual mode the exposure comp bar in both viewfinder and back info display switches from displaying exposure comp setting to what the light meter thinks your exposure will be compared to what it thinks is ideal based on the manual settings. Basically it says for your aperture and shutter settings if you are going to be over, under or right on. Since that indicator has a couple stops worth of range each way you can tell when you are way off of getting close and exactly whee you sit. Basically shows you what you are going in the same way if it were in an automatic mode and set that same amount of exposure comp. So you can do much better than just guess and snap a photo, you can use that to judge. Still even when I am in an automatic mode, I often snap a photo to see if I want to put in some comp o change comp setting. And as a footnote, my N2000 in manual mode will show what it says the speed should be for the set aperture rather than controlling it and even my FE2 when in manual the internal light meter will tell me what I should set while a mechanical indicator shows the manual setting. So just because you switch to manual doesn't mean the built in light meter is still available to use as a guide even going way back.
I'm not quite sure I understand what you are saying. In my video I talk about lenses the D40 or D40x do not meter with. That would be non-AI, AI and AIs lenses. If I understand you correctly, you are talking about manual mode but with lenses the D40 and D40x meters with. This is basic manual mode with the meter making suggestions. But maybe I don't understand you correctly.
@@HerbsVintageTech okay, I missed that distinction, I wasn't testing with an older lens. I find it really surprising they have the metering in the lens and none at all in the body, that basically insures non compatibility with older lenses despite the same mount.
@@andreaslack8379 No problem. Metering is always happening in the camera body, never the lens. Backwards compatibility with older lenses was left out of the "entry level" and "mid-level" (like the 5xxx series) Nikons on purpose to save money and distinguish between those cameras and the "higher tier" ones. It was simply a selling point. What I wanted to show in my video is that even the lenses that don't meter work great with the D40(x) and the Nikon 3xxx series. Just just have to meter yourself. I see this as an opportunity to learn and grow as a photographer rather than see it as an incompatibility. If you check out my video on the Pentax K100D series you will see that Pentax built in the metering option for older lenses into their bodies. These are also good cameras to check out.
Do I need to use rechargeable batteries or can I just use normal AA batteries. The normal AA batteries were working just fine for a couple hours and now it won’t turn on. It said that a high capacity battery is recommended
Also should I use lithium or alkaline batteries?
Lithiums work fine. But I presonally use Energizer rechargeables. You can watch my video on the Pentax K100D. The batteries I show there work great.
It is sad that Ricoh choosed to crop the raw files. They could have show the crop on the raw but keep the entire file.. As when using different ratios on some cameras..
Apparently (as a commenter suggested), it depends on the raw developing software if you have the crop info in the raws or not. So the raws still contain all the information. So it looks like that would be great firmware update feature in the future: Let the photographer choose if the raw is cropped or not.
Thanks for the video. Does cropping to narrower lenses also process the image in such a way that it also gets the qualities of the cropped mm? Say will the 50mm crop have a flatter image than the 28mm, making it more suitable for portraits for example?
No, it does not. The image will always be the same, the character of the lens will be unchanged.
I have purchased a Nikon D40 KIT Set including the original Box in really rarely used condition. I am super excited. 🙂
Congrats! I'm sure you will have a lot of fun with it.
Vintage Nikons are awesome. I have the D200, 300, D3, D4. Just got the D40 for $70 with 11K shutter count.
I've enjoyed my Nikon D3, D700, and D300 cameras. Superb images, solid build, serious cameras.
Having a 6 mega pixel camera in 2024 isn't as crazy as it sounds if you understand a little bit about mega pixel settings I have a few cameras and never use the camera above a settings of 8 mega pixel which will give you a 6 by 4 photo that will look good on a 4k screen you don't really need a large amount of mega pixels unless you are a professional who takes photos for full page magazine shots or news papers which would be around A3 and A4 size so would then need up to 20 mega pixel sensor
Exactly. I have sold many photos from 6mp DSLRs for full page prints in magazines. One of my D40 images of Machu Picchu ended up in a full size ad from a travel company. You can enlarge the D40 prints to 24x36 inches and if the photo is good, nobody will ask you what camera it was taken with. The only time you need more megapixels is if you tend to crop a lot. Yet, then I would have a look at the focal length I'm using.
Huge 4k movie projection is around 8MP. That is billboard size 😮
I have a Nikon D40 What lenses would you recommend for it? I shoot anything from macros to planes to astrophotography.
That is actually hard to answer as I don't know what your photography looks like and what size and weight preferences you have for your gear. The 18-55 kit lens is an extremely versatile piece of kit. It's macro capabilities are not bad. There is a stabilized version available as well, albeit it is not as sharp. The 55-200mm VR lens is excellent and a good fit for the D40. For Macro and mild telephoto work, check out the 40mm f2.8 Micro-Nikkor. If you can live without autofocus (for macro manual focusing is preferable anyways), the Tokina AT-X 100mm f2.8 is a fantastic allrounder, from Macro to medium telephoto. The best money you can spend for your D40 kit is the 35mm f1.8 DX.
@@HerbsVintageTech Thanks!
I agree with you 100%. The D40 is a fantastic camera. I have had multiple high-end Nikon, Pentax and Fujifilm DSLRS, but the 'ancient' D40 is still one of my favorites. Simple to use and amazing image quality straight out of the camera.
It's bigger brother, the Nikon D50, is also one of my favorite cameras. The image quality is really high and it produces beautiful colors. It shares the same sensor as the D40 but a bit more versatile as it can also use virtually any Nikon lens.
Great job Herb. I have a Nikon D40X with a kit lens. I also have an older Nikkor 35-70 AF f2.8 lens with manual aperature ring that I had on an old film camera. When I try to use it on the D40X, the screen reads, "Lock lens aperature ring at minimum aperature." Everything locks up until I change the lens from f2.8 to f22. However in the viewfinder, with the lens set to f22, I can see aperature settings of f2.8 under certain exposure setting in manual mode. What is going on? This makes no sense to me. I want to use this lens exclusively for shooting at f2.8 when I want to. Thanks for your great videos. I appreciate your knowledge and presentation style.
The len's physical aperture changing doesn't fit with the cameras mount from what I understand
@@mpk6664 okay, thank you Herb.
I use the 50mm crop a lot, I know it’s only 7 megapixels, I have old images from my Olympus E1 and my old canon both only 5 megapixels, they look good and are perfectly printable.
hello and thank you for the review! I have the same camera from years ago. its still working but it doesnt read a brand new sd card that i inserted to it. what can i do about this issue. thanks in advance!
Thank you! Renews my interest in my GRIII. Looking to pair with GRIIIx too. Both for travel kit.
The GR111x is a wonderful focal length. I really recommend it.
ı found one at my home but it doesn't work I have no sd card to use is it not work because I don't use sd card? are your cameras work without sd card ?
Yes, they work without an SD card. You can record a few photos in the internal memory. You most likely need to use better batteries. The S760 won't turn on with very cheap batteries or ones that are not new.
@@HerbsVintageTech thanks for feedback really, I used Duracell as batterie but it didn't work anyway probably have bigger problem. ı also found a sd card try with them but still no respond
@@lhofattomamma Next thing to try is if you have a slight film of corrosion on your battery contacts. This can happen over time if the camera is not used for a while. take some fine sandpaper or a screwdriver and lightly (!) rub on the battery contacts on the battery door. VERY carefully do the same thing on the contacts in the camera body. Do you have contact spray or WD40 in your house? If so, take a little drip of it on your finger and tap on the battery contacts. Put the batteries back in the camera and turn it on again. See if this helps.
@@HerbsVintageTech actually I didn't give you details it's my fault. the little green light always on so I think its not about batteries before sd card there was not even green light but now there's little green light when I push the power button but nothing is happen but light
@@lhofattomamma Do you have access to really good batteries, like Energizer Lithiums? Even if you just borrow them? I know you said you use Duracell batteries, but they have lower end batteries as well. If the camera was not on for a long time, it will charge the internal capacitor that keeps the time which will draw power. Did you leave the batteries in over night?
This video has been seen +15k time. So many people can't be wrong. You are right.
Indeed. I had lots of camera. (Leica ...yes... leica m, sony, olympus and canon) D40 was not my first but my first CCD... And i think it is my best camera. A CCD ... think of it ! So the sensor is not a joke... I try to deal with picture profile (on camera) and dxo.... but D40 are just the one... for my eyes.
Hi, i have the same camera but cell were leaked in my camera and camera stop working what should i do now please reply😢
Hi there, unfortunately there is not much you can do. The acid from the battery probably corroded the contacts and/or lines and destroyed them. Have a look around maybe you can find a cheap replacement.
The kit lens was not great. The Pentax 35mm DA L f/2.4 AL prime lens elevated the picture quality so much everyone should grab one.very sharp.
Thanks a lot. I also like the smaller lenses, mainly the MF (AI,AIS), AF or AF-D Nikkor lenses. Although I also have newer ("better") lenses, they will not make me a better photographer.
Very nice, I was also a long time Nikon only shooter. My first Canon was also the 350Xt, I used it with a converter and a Nikon Ai 50 1.4 for a long time. Then got a Canon lens and the bokeh is very different from my Nikons and the color palette as well. It was a nice and welcome change,. increased my "paint brushes" if you will. Im getting a 50D soon to compliment the 350xt, since I like to have two bodies when I shoot. I still love my Nikons and I shoot them often and wont ever sell them but Canon is just as good. Surprised it took me so long to try them, I guess it just speaks to the quality of Nikon.
Well said. It's great to experiment and with the older cameras, it doesn't have to cost a lot. I enjoy shooting the Rebel XT.
Interesting idea to build an adapter from Canon EF to Nikon F.
Instead of the Rebel XT, use a old Canon 5D MK1, and adapt Nikon, Pentax, and M42. It's AWESOME!
Just watched a few of your videos, liked and subscribed. I wonder if you would like the Nikon D2H - I do... Re the Keith Richards interview, that first 10 minutes is always so exciting, I go for retro gear because it doesn't beak the bank and you can usually re-sell for close to or more than you paid, then you can have the first 10 minutes again and again. :p
Good entry level dslr in its time . That’s what it was geared for …..
The fabulous D40 is just as relevant now as it was right after its introduction. Most people would probably be better photographers by learning how to use the basic, but completely adequate camera controls of the little D40. It was my first dslr and I took some great photos with it.
100%. For the price today, the D40 can't be beat. It has everything a great camera needs.
You can take great photo even now ! 😉
Nikon D3100 or Canon 1200d? 🤔
Choose the one in better shape. They are both capable of excellent images. If they both come with a kit lens only, the Nikon kit lens is better.
My first DSLR was the K100D in 2006. Today I still own a K100D and an *ist DS, the predecessor of the K100D. One advantage of the *ist DS over the K100D is its prism viewfinder, which is much better for manual focusing. The *ist series started with the *ist D (prism viewfinder), followed by the *ist DS and the *ist DL. Note that the DL has a mirror viewfinder rather than a prism, just like the K100D/K100Ds/K110D. All *ist models lack IBIS. One nice feature of the *ist D is the flap in the base plate that allows easy access to the button cell that stores date and time settings. Unfortunately, Pentax omitted this handy feature from all subsequent bodies. Also worth mentioning is the so-called debug mode. All *ist models as well as the K100D and K110D have this mode available in the firmware. Not so with the K100Ds, you have to download this software separately (Pentaxforums is a source for such stuff). Debug mode allows fine tuning of the AF to compensate for front or rear focus, a feature not available on the mentioned models per se. AF tuning can only store one value at a time, so when I change lenses I quickly switch into debug mode to set the appropriate value for that lens. Once you get used to it, it takes about 15 seconds. Note, however, that there are settings in debug mode that can potentially damage your camera, so please read up well on what to do and what to avoid before you decide to try it out. Gruß und cheers!
Thank you for the helpful video Herb!
I have both the D40 and the D50. Not sure if they share the same sensor, but the image quality of the D50 is also very beautiful, rendering a film-like image, but with a larger body and slightly more functionality, as it has an inbuild focusing motor allowing the use of the full range of Nikon AF cameras in AF mode.
Thank you for this nice overview of the K100D, one of my favorite cameras. Even in JPG the image quality is outstanding.
😀😀
Bravo! It was my first DSLR and I loved it.
Thank you for the explanation!! Will consider putting the crops in a function button also
great explanation, thanks!
Thanks for this great video. I still love shooting with my K100D, it's a great camera and lots of fun to use. Unlike some other big brands, Pentax didn't de-feature their cameras to protect sales of upper-end models, they gave you everything and the kitchen sink. It's a shame the market didn't fully recognise it at the time. Here's a fun tip if you want to feel like you're shooting an old Spotmatic with manual light meter switch: When using K lenses enable the optical preview, this stops down the lens but also turns on the meter so you can manually set your exposure in real time by adjusting the shutter speed. It works on all my Pentax bodies.
I only shoot jpegs and I almost never edit so the camera I like the most is the one with the best jpegs.
Did you try the D5000?
Yes, I used most Nikon DSLRs up to the D810. The D5000 uses basically the same sensor as the D300, which is a good thing. For me the 5000 series didn't add a lot of value compared to the "entry level" Nikons. Same lens compatibility, same sensors, same image quality.
Fuji XF10 crops and upscales in camera. Very nice
Yes, just like the X100F did. The problem with upscaling in the camera is, that you always will end up with a jpg and you are locked in what the camera software can do. If the camera would turn out a cropped raw file, you can choose an external upscaler (like Gigapixel or similar) and those get better as time goes on.
I have k100d and I m very happy with this canera. Only missing the beep when is focused. I dont now why….
You can turn on the focus confirmation beep in the menu.
Good luck, Herb. Your D40 video landed in my "recommendations" -- subbed! I still have mine from new.
Nikon D6 was and still is the best dslr.
The D6 is great. But a tiny bit heavy for many :)
It is what you like. Any camera is relevant. Are you able to tell the story with said camera? Is it helping you? Got the glass you need? Great! Everything is preference, and what makes you happy. A D40, or Z7 mk.2 or Z9, D850, it goes on and on. That is just Nikon. I had a D40, and had a ball with it. Small, light, and good lens support for my needs, but ultimately for what I was doing I landed on used D700, and D800. I shoot used Sony A7iii x 2 . I had a Canon 1DX, sadly it died a too soon death. I get the deal with the CCD, and CMOS deal, but not concerned about. Too busy telling the best story I can and not worrying whatis inside my camera. I am about my technique, the composition, and more. It ends always the same way. The kind of story you want to tell. I could really care less the sensor inside. I shot wonderful images with a Nikon D200, and D40,70s, D3200, 7100, 700, 800, just to name a few. I have the D800 and 700 now. They fill my needs well. I have Sony too. It is about my improvement of the art. Not the flavor of my camera on RUclips.
Well phrased. Yet life would be boring without RUclips videos :) Can we see any of your art?
