Ruiz fought the dumbest fight possible. It was stupid for Ruiz to let Roy get off before him so often, because let's be real, Ruiz wasn't quick enough to rely on counter punching against Roy Jones. Roy get's in and out of range too quickly. Ruiz could have possibly beat Roy if he fought like an aggressive heavyweight in this fight, and was willing to take some to land some. Ruiz needed to pressure Jones a lot more by moving forward with the jab, putting Jones on the back foot, and forcing him to use his feet. Eventually Ruiz would have gotten some opportunities to trap Jones on the ropes and unload a little bit. Instead, he just stood still, and waited for Jones to feint, and pick his shots at will, and he didn't even make Roy have to work at all. At the very beginning of the fight in the first round, Ruiz had the right idea, but after that, it was over. Ruiz fought at Roy's pace for the rest of the fight, and he looked unsure of how to handle the much smaller fighter. It's not like Jones was throwing a ton of volume at Ruiz. The least Ruiz could have done was fire his jab at will. Even if most of them didn't land, at least it keeps Roy from feinting his way in with one or two shots at a time, and it gives Ruiz a way to move forward, and keep Jones moving backward, or laterally.
