Dragon Themed Soap w/ Mica Line Design Technique
Dragons! I made these discs a while back and never got around to testing them! For my fall line I decided to go through and grab discs I had made but hadn't had time to test and make soaps about those discs! I love these. They weren't perfect, but I really like the dragon embed and how the mica lines worked!

Creating an Apple Themed Soap w/ Embeds and Hanger Swirl Technique

Apples! A couple years ago I made a bunch of fruit #extruderdiscs in the small 18mm/23mm disc sizes. And I've wanted to take those discs and make them in the large 57mm size! So, I've been slowly doing that. I got the apple ones made for this fall and I love how they turned out! #soapdough #coldprocesssoap #fallsoap #handmadesoap #applesoap 0:00 Apple Soap 0:05 Pouring the Base 0:40 Adding Top ...

    I can't wait to try these out but what is the full recipe for method 1 quick hot process because you said you use 5% coconut oil and i was wondering what makes that different from yhe second batch?

    • @TheSoapArtist
      @TheSoapArtist 5 дней назад

      MY customers liked the less coconut oil version better. But I'd say try different recipes and see what you like. You can start with the recipe I provide at 12:55 in the video. Then if you want to adjust from there and rerun the calculations you can do that. If you remove some coconut oil you can add it into the tallow/stearic to make up the difference. :)

    I know this is many months later, but would giving the leftover soaps out as samples be feasible? I try not to have too much soap leftover after cutting, but some always remains. I cut them into mini soap sizes, put them in little glassine bags with an ingredient/scent label and send them out with orders or hand them out at markets. At first I thought this much work for soap samples was a waste of time but it paid off for me. I gave a sample to someone who now pays me every year to make sample size bars for their accounting/tax business, and they give them to all their customers as a thank you. That’s hundreds of people every year getting my soaps. It was worth it! ETA: a word.

    I am a complete newbie in the soap making world, having only made 1 batch of soap thus far. Im trying to understand all of these different concepts you are teaching, but the question that keeps nagging me is this: why do we need to know all this? Cant we just plug in the numbers into soapcalc and get the ideal scenario? In reality does anyone sit there calculating these numbers? Is soapcalc limited in some scenario which would compel us to do all this manually?

    • @TheSoapArtist
      @TheSoapArtist 14 дней назад

      Can you just use a soap calculator? Or course. That's what I do, because the math takes time and both will give me the same results. But I understand exactly HOW soapcalc is giving me the results it is. And that is a good thing to know. I am firm believe that having a firm base for understanding HOW soap calc gives you these numbers is important if you want to grow as a soap maker. Knowledge is never wasted. Understanding how water works in your recipe allows you to use it to your advantage depending on the design/technique you want to do. Understanding how the saponification process works will help you troubleshoot problems and allow you to understand some of the "rules" you hear. Knowing how to calculate a recipe can save you if you mess up because you will know how to fix it/what you need to do to fix it. Understanding percentages will allow you to look at any recipe (as you grow and learn more about oils) and determine if you think it's a good recipe/want to try it/tweak it... Do you need to do the math to make soap, no. Does understanding the math help you grow as a soap maker, most definitely. IS this something you have to/need to learn all at once? No. These are concepts that you will learn over time, with the more batches you make, the more you explore oils, the more you have to troubleshoot mistakes...that's when you come back and revisit this knowledge and learn and grow. It's how things will start to click the more you learn. I didn't understand all these concepts when I first started, nor did it all make sense right at the start. I learned over time through many many many batches of making soap :)

    I’m confused on the solution strength…I’ve never seen anyone else talk about it. Is it called something else that others may be referring to? Maybe super fat?

    • @TheSoapArtist
      @TheSoapArtist 21 день назад

      Hi! Super fat is something completely different from water strength. (Superfat is about excess oils in soap, water strength is about the lye to water ratio). Most people just say: 25% Lye Solution (or any other percentage that you're using), what they mean when they say this is basically my "water solution strength is 25%" You'll see it on Lye calculators as "lye concentration".

    • @TheSoapArtist
      @TheSoapArtist 21 день назад

      I recommend going to soapcalc.net and playing with that calculator, and using the "lye concentration" option when it comes to water and you'll get an idea more on water strength. You can also play with the other water options. It's a great way to learn.

    Hello - this is an old video but hoping you might see my comment. Once you know the fragrance oil or essential oil percentage you want to use, do you work the amount out to be measured from the total batch weight or the total weight of the oils? Thank you!

    • @TheSoapArtist
      @TheSoapArtist 23 дня назад

      There's a lot of different information out there and some "old" information that persists on sticking around is that the FO is based off the weight of the oils. Ask your supplier, but every one I have asked (and all the ones I use), the IFRA max amounts are based off the total batch weight. So, calculate how much water, lye, and oils you have and then take a % of that number to find the max amount of fragrance you can use based off the IFRA. SoapCalc doesn't calculate the fragrance that way, and I never use it. I always just calculate by hand because it's easy and fragrances all have different usage rates. For calculating Essentials Oils I use this calculator: www.eocalc.com/enter-your-own-blend/
