Hospice care is one of the services that palliative medicine offers and they are similar in many aspects. But Hospice is not "where people go to die!". It's a means for a more peaceful and dignified death that is going to happen soon. Palliative medicine can help not only patients with advanced canc...

Excellent presentations Doc! I'm scheduled to start on Cisplatin next week (once the PEG tube and port are placed) for an HPV+ oropharyngeal SSC tumor involving the left base of tongue, tonsil and 3 lymph nodes. I'll have chemo one day a week followed by radiation 5 days a week for 7 weeks. Knowing that everyone reacts differently, is there anything I should do, or avoid specific to Cisplatin? Being a guitar player, I'm concerned about neuropathy in the hands and fingers for obvious reasons. Opinions seem to be all over the place whether ice packs help or not... I suppose it can't hurt anything. It seems to me that if works, ice packs would be part of the standard protocol. My Cancer Center locally does not offer ice stating "you can bring your own if you want to." Also, do you recommend fasting before and after treatment? If so how long? I've accepted that fact that it's going to be difficult at best over the next year, however any pointers that may help at all will be greatly appreciated! You should do an episode on HPV to raise awareness, I had never even heard of it until it caused my cancer! Like #8 Jim, in Alabama

When I had my chemo for endometrial cancer, 3 days after my treatment I would experience horrible leg pain that would last for 3 days. After I finished my chemo I was told by a few patients that Claritin D, the allergy med, helps to relieve this pain. Is there any truth to this?

There have been studies looking at this specific question and none of them showed a true benefit from Claritin in Neulasta induced aches and pains. The effect most people feel is likely a placebo effect. But honestly it’s a harmless medication that wouldn’t hurt to use just in case. Also, you got taxol as part of your chemo regimen and that can cause pain in and of itself.

UPDATE: The auto- generated CC reads " use alcohol as a mouthwash ". What Dr.Kessler actually SAID was ..."USE an alcohol FREE mouthwash"... If you have any sores or irritations in your mouth from your chemo, alcohol will burn 🔥 !l

Yes; thank you, Jackie! The sound is a little suboptimal and this is the only spot that escaped the proof-reading 😅. I will repost the video with the corrected close-caption. Thanks, everyone, for sharing.

also try to avoid buying meat and cheese from the deli. if u must, buy the pre-packaged variety and stay away fromopen buffets like Golden Coral during chemo.
