As a landscape artist who typically embraces loose, abstract styles, this challenge pushed me to rethink my approach to proportion, accuracy, and process. Join me as I navigate the ups and downs of trying something new, sharing the lessons learned along the way.

I love your videos in the morning here in Boston before I start my art stuff and routine ☕️🪴🌬️🎨
Oh thank you for this!
Much Love from Newbury St. in Boston !💜🧸💐
Today, I paint! But first, let's re-organize my tubes, prob should clean two palettes that I was lazy and didn't clean last time, gotta eat something, check emails, palettes soaked/cleaned/dried, look at unfinished painting, decide on changes, what colors did I use again?, how am I gonna do this or that?, hmm room needs vacuumed, is the sun in a good spot?, better make a grocery list, i need help! Didn't Vida say she was a landscape artist and liked that best? Will see if she has any tips.... which video to watch? that looks good, oh, theres a good one, maybe that one and that one, finally settle on one, husband came home with his usual greeting - what's to eat?, ugh!, start video (this one) and almost the first comment out of your mouth was to apply a thin layer of linseed oil cuz the painting has sat for a week..... mine has sat for 2 months! But there you go! start with the linseed oil! and once you put brush to canvas, you are on your way and nothing can interrupt you. THANKS FOR THAT LITTLE TIDBIT to get me started! oh, well, better finish video! THEN I will get started. :)
This was EPIC!!! 😂
Painting is an EXPRESSION of ourselves. So how appropriate and refreshing to have a painter speak of other issues in their life not giving in to the weather or the "off-ness" of getting up late. And thank you for the reminder that you WILL be successful when you put the effort in. I homeschooled my sons and my focus was not booklearning or scholastic. It was the strength of your mind. Overcoming outside circumstances or snarky people to rise above. So thank you again for that reminder to rise above and putting your "mind to it". Oh for pete sake, i am typing as i am listening and you just mentioned the mom mode (and the comment that you didnt get to paint yesterday) - that, too, is so true! I have a knot in my stomach of i cant paint BUT I am a grandma who helps with daycare and that mode means weeks with no painting. But i adore grandma mode, too! What a great musing! Yes, a lesson in painting can refer to many other areas of life. Ugh! Time management. And now you are on to habitual reactions and not being hard on yourself... isnt life all about learning!! Blessings to you and encouragement for success in all your goals! Oh my gosh, i could comment so much more on accepting yourself, but holy moly, i am exhausted now....time for a nap! THIS WAS DEEP! 😂😊😊
Hello my friend! We homeschooled our girls as well! We let them be, I guess an Unschooling style, and if I had 100 more I’d homeschool them all. And I FULLY enjoyed your musings as you were listening to my musings. What a treat. Thank you so much 🥰🥰🥰
Thankyou for taking us along on this painting Very brave. None of my suggestions were given in a bad way Just sharing some of the pitfalls I have encountered during my drawing journeys
Thank you for being here and sharing your thoughts. It makes risk taking worth while.
One of the other problems I have encountered is Printers that “fit the image to a size” Un check this feature and keep it to original size When the printer shrinks it can shorten the legs or change the body Not noticed on a landscape But you sure see it on animals or people
Oh interesting… I’ll keep this in the back of my mind for when I print out images.
Did you do your drawing flat on the table Sometimes that can skew the proportions( ask me how I know that!😂)
😂 oh you’re funny! Actually no, I did them right in the easel with a grid and measuring. I need more practice and I’m pretty sure I’ll begin to see things more precisely. At least I hope so!
If you split the face down the centre Either one is correct They are both not quite the same scale
Yep…neither side quite right. I chose the left side to fix. Works much better now.
🎉🎉🎉
I did this type of challenge with a donkey. Wow, did it turn out bad. I am somewhere in the middle of loose and detailed. The longer I work on it, the more detailed it gets. I use a grid for portraits. I think I need to keep moving away from realism. Thank you for this video.
Thanks so much for your thoughts. I do enjoy loose brushstrokes next to fine detail. I love the wool next to the detailed eye. Loose and thick palette knife work and fine detail where needed. I do understand your preference as I am naturally in the same place.
☀️🏔️📱🤔💭🎨🖼️. - 🤙🏼💜
Beautiful insight, I could just imagine the brilliant scene at that precise moment.
It was INCREDIBLE!!! Such a sight! The pink tones of sunrise and a clear atmosphere from all the winds. Beautiful...
Good morning 🎉
Good Morning!
just missed you!.. ttys
Hello Susan!
hi
Yes! So true... no matter what we want to accomplish... it's our dedicated consistent practices that will bring it to fruition!! ... It's important to incorporate the fundamentals into a project, be it drawing; painting; time management.. what have you...and it's the dedicated consistency that will bring it to fruition. .. 😀 👏 👏 👏
This has been one of my life long lessons. It has taken me many years to get it down. Thankfully, it's easier now, although I still float off path once in a while.
@vidaevensonart ditto.. lol ... as we all do .. the important thing is that we see the path and can always find our way back to it❣️
I like it a lot more after the Golden Ratio, the painting was more visually appealing to me. I don't analyze art trying to see ,If it right or wrong. I just leave it to " I like something or I don't"
It's interesting that most often when I really like a painting I'm working on it's because of the golden ratio. I don't always use it in the beginning stages, it depends on the composition and what I want to say about the painting, but often when I'm painting, and lost in some other area of the practice, I find I'm excited about the painting because of that balanced imbalance that the golden ratio so beautifully enhances.
THANK YOU!!!!
You're so welcome!
Hi Vida ~ I REALLY liked this video! I am only in the beginning stages of finding my "style" but I did figure out one mantra: you are either really good at realism or it just looks stupid! I love it when you can put a dab of paint just there and give the illusion of a realistic item. I did do a painting of 2 pistachios in a realism way, but I worked and reworked and reworked, to the point of no enjoyment. And to me, that is not what art is about! Thank you for filming "what's not for you"!
p.s. can't wait to dive into all your videos!!
I loved this comment and did a whole morning musings about it! I used to think if I wasn't good at it, then I should do something else. Then, I had the crazy idea to learn how to paint a landscape. I thought that if I could successfully paint a landscape then I'd be able to paint anything. I was terrible at it at first, then I got better and better and now I feel as if landscapes are my calling. Thanks so much for commenting. It brought some clarity to my mind.
Oh how sweet! Let me know if you have any questions! And if you want to learn something let me know here. If I can help I'll do a video on it.
Drawing portraits are a hit or miss when I give it a try. Don't know all the rules going about drawing. This may sound dum but sometimes I feel the rules get in the way? So what I do, is look at it, before during and after.
I fully agree with not following the "rules", or rather, I agree fully with learning the rules and then breaking them. I think it's important to break the rules in order to expand and explore your creativity. There is a danger of getting stuck in the "rules", which can hinder your creativity. I think it takes guts to push beyond the comfort of the rules into uncharted territory.... that's where the fun is.
I teach H.S. art and we mention golden ratio, but find it hard to really to approach....BUT THIS is approachable. Thank you!
There’s an even easier way, especially for H.S. art students. I did an updated version using the rule of thirds which you could use as the simplifying trick to find the golden ratio easily. Here’s the link: ruclips.net/video/VQLQS4q2Fuk/видео.htmlsi=hY20VVt_NqSsU8Y2
This painting really tested me! What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from your own creative struggles? Comment below! 👇✨
I tend to take screenshots of art off instagram. Though rarely do I place them on a vision board.
Hello my lovely sister!
Thank you ! ✨💜
You are so welcome!
I enjoy your videos. I'm trying to do the RUclips thing but so far not so well.
Thanks Jay! So I took a look at your channel. First, you need at least 100 videos to even get started and second, if you can do a video a week or every 2 weeks at the very least you’ll probably get picked up by the algorithm easier than you are now. People will find you. Don’t get discouraged. It’s still very early.
@ thank you for checking it out. I know I need to put in more effort. I'm working on it. I do the videos to entertain myself. I do watch yours
Hi Vida! Thank you for this great video. I did my first oil painting 3 weeks ago but it cracked! I am not done with it and thought I can work in layers but now I am worried I can't do that. I would so appreciate your advice on this. Thank you!
Hi! Thanks for your comment. If it cracked then that usually means you didn’t follow the fat over lean method or your materials aren’t working well together, paints with binder etc. could also be temperature but usually it’s not adhering to fat over lean in some way.
Your best bet is to start a new one. Let this one go, either scrape it back or leave it. Document materials used and when the painting cracked. On your new painting (I know how hard it is to let go of a painting) make sure you have artist grade paints and your medium should also be artist grade quality. Make sure you gesso your canvas before beginning and keep the painting at a normal room temperature. Let me know if you have any questions
I love your "ocean in a cup" analogy!!❤
Ahhhh…. To be One with the ocean…. I wonder how life would unfold?
@vidaevensonart I agree... my soul craves the ocean.. and,I'm currently landlocked... I feel like a fish out of water... so it's absolutely lovely to see you enjoying the island life and especially the ocean 💖
I think U are wonderful too! Look forward to your portrait or figure, think I'll paintalong with U!
I’ll let you know. Still doing drawings and learning basic form.
Good morning 🌄
Good morning! So nice to have you here 🥰
You're not alone... I'm the same way... and most likely many are... . laughter is the best medicine 😂😂😂
Laughter is the best medicine 😍😍😍
P.S. I think you’re wonderful. 🤗
Arting without fear is my goal. I am always afraid that I can’t make anything “good” or worthwhile, that every idea will ruin what I’ve already created. Thank you for the encouragement, I need to hear others persevering, and know that it’s okay and I should just keep on keepin’ on! 🥰
Yes, my dear… embrace “good enough”. Paint, do what you can, sign it and put it out into the world. Then do it again. Throughout the entire process observe your thoughts and when perfectionism comes in, replace it with “it’s good enough” and move on.
👋 all and happy new year.
⚜️This is a helpful video.⚜️ - 💜
Thank you! Everything starts with the Notan. Great tool for getting your idea down on canvas effectively.
⚜️Thank you so very much. Your beautiful soul, and the positive energy you project is unprecedented.⚜️ - 💜💙💜
Thank YOU! 🙏
Your artwork is almost as beautiful as you.🌹XII
Thank you so much 😀
I did a similar thing from a drawing I saw in a sketch by Leonardo that I wanted to construct, and I understood how to construct it geometrically the rectangle as an extension of the square but realized I needed to construct the rectangle within the square and then extend it so I solved the construction.....this was fun watching your video and thanks.
Ooh what a cool idea!
❤
🥰
Been so cloudy in Michigan today. Grrr.
I grew up in MN. I don’t miss the winters at all 😂
Good morning. I've been thinking the same about human form. I bought a fashion illustration book for ideas. 2025 is a perfect time for delving into something new.
Love this 🥰🥰🥰. Let’s do it!!!
Excited to see new art!!
We shall see what comes from this!
Thank you
You’re welcome!
I hadn’t thought about this before either. I agree that being nice is connected to having good manners and being congenial. Kindness is more thoughtful and does come from a place of genuine care and giving of yourself. Thanks for the thought.
When my friend differentiated between the two I was surprised I had never considered any real difference. I've been thinking about it ever since. Thinking of how I have judged others for not being nice (not that they were awful, just not being congenial) when in fact they did many more acts of kindness than I did (especially in my younger years when I was clouded with my false/ego self). This was a good lesson for me, and thank you for listening. Sending you some virtual baklava🧡
Happy New Year, 2025
Happy New Year 🎉😊
Happy new year to you 🎉🎉🎉
I lost 30 pounds on carnivore/keto. 10 pounds a month. It changed the way I saw myself and I like myself more. 🎉

Good Morning! May you have a beautiful 2025 filled with love and free flowing creativity 🥰🎉🎉🎉
