Paper crafting, book arts, marbling, junk journals- a true paper junkie! With inspiration from local book artists, RUclips tutorials and Facebook groups, I continue to expand my repertoire of book structures. Because I do not like all white pages for every journal, by learning about other cultures , time periods and fantasy worlds my creativity is sparked. I can then incorporate new themes, designs and ideas into the pages of my journals with digital collage.

@@sheilamay758 thank you so much!
I am a whole 36 year old man, and somehow I still want to be like you when I grow up. This book is SO COOL!!!
Thanks! Well, I’m a 70-year-old woman and still enjoy it so go for it man!
This is absolutely one of the most unique, beautiful, and interesting takes on creating a teaching Grimoire/Book of Shadows. Created by someone who isnt even a witch no less! Love it!
Thank you
You should do a video tutorial on Limp Bindings. 😊 Love the work you have done!
Thank you for the compliment. Tutorials take lots of editing which is beyond my video skills at this point.
Love the works you made!! If you’d like some more examples I’d recommend the two books on Limp Binding by Monica Langwe. They both have period examples with lots of technical details but also modern interpretations of those bindings. I went down the limp binding rabbit hole a few years back too!!
You are so kind - Thank you!!
Those books look great! I like how you bound some classics. I too have been contemplating populating my home library with bound Gutenberg project books . Do you also type set? Thank you for the leads!I have been doing a bunch of research since I last commented XP You probably already saw this one but ill copy it anyways because I love how the slotted spine looks. I feel like there is so much spine variety one can get with the color of leather used for covering the raised bands alone. ruclips.net/video/orjQp-HGnRo/видео.html Im not sure if you have found this or not but she seams to be a proffesional in restoration and conservation. Her talks on reused bindings are interesting and bring insight to the limp vellum and stationers bindings. www.youtube.com/@RitaUdinaTaller There is lots on book binding in french if you understand or if you can get past the clunky auto translate. This is a take on the non adhesive binding that had me raising eye bows but the third link in the discription is gold. There are some cool scans of old texts and manusctipts. There is much more if you search "Reliure de livre, Reliure" ruclips.net/video/yXYjrp2boCo/видео.html
No typesetting. Thanks for the kind comments. I also have bound my genealogy records and some bookbinding textbooks from Stopan here on RUclips. Mostly though they are blank journals Some do have decorated pages using photoshop and my photos or purchased digital elements. Did junk journals for a while. Hope you have fun with your binding.
Thank you so much- will be checking these out!❤️

How EXCITING, Sheila! BEAUTIFUL work!
Thank you so much!
Does the book get wrapped up into the pouch???
The long tail of the cover with the knot on the end is looped over your belt. That’s where it gets the name, girdle book. The leather is applied to the cover like a regular book. Only the tail end continues to become the part that fits through your belt.
Beautiful. What size are pages please
These are 8.5x11 folded in half.
Love your book and your yummy marbled paper! Thanks for showing, I have been thinking of making one of these for a few years now. I better get cracking!
Go for it!
Very cool video! 🎉 I made one with some leftover canvas from a different project and some cardboard for stiffener but it came out abit jank lol. I think that with some proper cloth stiffener and some binding tape it could be quite nice. A waxed canvas is also stiff and doesn't fray. It also protects from humidity like the original vellum did. Did the teacher happen to mention the size limits of this binding? Also are leather thongs obligatory for this binding or can I use heavy hemp cord? Thanks again for the video!
Thank you for the comments. No mention of size limits in the class but most are in the 6x9 or smaller. Thongs by their compressible and stretchy nature go through the holes and then tighten. I do not think cord will hold the same way and give the same flexibility. We made our first binding with thick card stock and it works okay for more limited use. Over time the holes for the thongs will weaken more than the vellum. For more insight you might enjoy this video from the 1970s by Christopher Clarkson. He was a conservator who helped with the repair of vellum books in the Florence flood. He went on to study the structure and write more details about his discoveries. If you leave a comment for his son Eoghan he might still have copies of Christophers pamphlet that gives some interesting history and instruction. ruclips.net/video/orjQp-HGnRo/видео.html
Thank you. It's a pretty book
How are the little books attached to the cover of the larger books?
The little books had endpapers that provided a glue surface to attach both to the large book cover and the outer little book cover
I can’t say it enough, I’m totally I love with this junk journal. Who ever got this beautiful piece of art is very lucky❤❤
Thank you very much. A mother (friend of mine) gave this to her daughter who is on the swim team.
Is there some digital kit of this grimoire?
I created the pages myself in photoshop. Since I am unclear on some of the copyrights I cannot sell any part of the book. There are however some awesome artists on Etsy making grimoire pages that I have seen since creating this book. You might take a look.
it is the piece of art❤

My dear dear, how incredible are YOU? Your Journal Speaks to me in many ways. I do like to see different versions of Alice in wonderland. I myself started projects over 16years ago and now am at the point in my life where I can do a few projects at the same time.
I love retirement for allowing me to try so many new things. Thank you for the kind comment!
Could you make another one of these? I would love to have one?
It is very flattering that you would want one so I thank you for the compliment. With a new grand baby I am not making journals at this time.
I e watched a lot of journaling videos, and I can honestly say, yours is one of the few that would make a wonderful item to sell - if it wasn’t obviously so much work. It is gorgeous and unique. ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you
It's wonderful, I love where your head has taken you in your research, tfs 🧙
Thank you for the kind comment.
I love this. I've watched your other video using paper 'guards' and can understand how to incorporate them, but cannot work out how you used the 'sewing supports' for this journal. Have you demonstrated anywhere how to make, attach and use in a journal? Thanks.
Thank you for the kind comment. The sewing support is actually to keep the threads that you used to attach the signatures from rubbing on and eventually destroying the threads that you used to make the cover. So a piece of book cloth or leather that is slightly less than the width of the spine is wrapped around two of the sewing stations for the cover and glued together and when you sew through the signature you go behind this sewing support and into the next hole. Your thread from the signatures is sandwiched between the spine piece and these supports rather than rubbing directly on the other threads. You can possibly see this better if you look at the DAS book binding video on this type of book. He has a video where he talks about variations and this is one of them. Ann’s book shows it as well. I think if you pause the video where I’m talking about the sewing supports you can actually see the wrapped book cloth around two of the stations. I hope this helps. Good luck!
I forgot to mention that I left a link to DAS book binding in the description box below the video. I’m not sure if that is his first video about Belgian binding and gives the particulars of the basics. If it is the first one the second one should be very near that video on his site.
@@sheilamay758 Thank you for that. So, if I wanted to add any embellishments, pockets etc. I should use the 'guards'?
@@junecleary4449 Guards just give a little more room but you will have some space without them. I think at the end of this video I show that there is some space available before you get a real alligator mouth. This is not a structure for heavy embellishing.
This is such incredible and inspiring work!! If only it was still fashionable in this day and era. Thank you for sharing. :)
Thank you! It was quite the adventure and I learned some interesting history as well as techniques.
Holy moly. I was just looking up projects for my 3rd grader to go with her Alice in Wonderland curriculum and stumbled across your AMAZING work. It’s just mind blowingly good.
Thank you so much. There are many lovely digital images on Etsy for Alice. It is a favorite subject for junk journal makers. Pop ups can be done in pretty simple ways by kids. You can add just one or two or make a card to add to the project for some extra pizzazz. Have fun!
I love this ! Wonderful work !
I'm not trying to copy your style but would love where to find 10-12 of those pages. any ideas? Thank you
Thank you- I used images both personal and online, text and color effects in photoshop to create the pages. The text was from research in the many books and articles I read to learn about the various topics. Some of the images were from the graphics fairy membership site. As for "copying" all the work I see is derivative- imitation is a form of flattery- so you wanting to do something similar I take as a great compliment- thanks!
WOW. These are AMAZING, Sheila! I don't think I've seen anything like it.
Thank you so much! I am on a medieval book making adventure. Learning new structures. Loads of fun.

Only this morning I have come across your absolutely gorgeous journal. As soon as I have finished other projects on my plate the journal will be the next one. I like to experiment. Hardly can wait. Meanwhile it keeps my mind busy as I have to find out how to make it. What is the size of your book? Thank you for sharing your book.
Thank you for the kind comments. My book is 6 1/2 inches tall by 4 3/4 wide and 2 inches thick.
I still find binding somewhat intimidating. Thank you for the sources on bookbinding. I am a visual learner as well. :-) The Owl and Raptor book is gorgeous. Best wishes~ Valerie.
Thank you and so glad I may have helped you discover more about this wonderful art form.
This is beautiful, and I'm sure your family loved it! It's the sort of interactive book I would have loved as as a kid/teen, and it's the sort of thing I still love! I'd like to get into junk journaling/paper crafting, and theming a journal would be fun to do. And this is full of inspiration for my own Book of Shadows/Grimoire. Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you so much! Giving inspiration to others makes me feel good- especially since so many have inspired me.

Thank you for the kind words!
So cute
Thank you!
Oh Sheila, this is so romantically regal. I love it. The cover is glorious, and looks like its from the regency era!! Thank you so much for the honor of using my designs. (I finally got the opportunity to watch this one...I am so sorry it took so long...the pandemic and lock-downs (we have just come out of our 6th one) have blurred my days into one..losing track of time) I totally agree with you, traditional journal writing, is about writing feelings, poems, stories, documenting events and getting ideas and thoughts down quickly.... bits and pieces get in the way of that and distract ones train of thought. And if that thought is postponed, because of shuffling bits and pieces around, it can be lost forever. But the way you have spread the ephemera pieces out in your journal is so practical and well planned, great for an authentic journal writer. Your journals are so beautifully crafted. Your marble paper digital collage pages are gorgeous. Thanks you so much Sheila, for sharing your beautiful work and for your wonderful support. I am deeply grateful. With admiration and appreciation, Jarf
Thank you for the kind words but more importantly for the great inspiration with your digitalis.
