Hi joel. Its nice to see you here in youtube sharing your knowledge with us. Are u meteorologist? Im studying BS Meteorology here in the Philippines.
Hi PattyChubs. This video was part of a series I created for my students at American Public University, a completely online university which caters to students all over the world. Are you a student there? Yes, I am a meteorologist. Blessings to your studies!
The arrow analogy from the start is perfect! Thanks
Thank you. This was awesome. I have been trying to figure this out for some time now..
Thanks heaps Joel for your guidance throughout this course!
Thanks Pete! I'm so glad that these videos were useful to you! Thanks for using them.
Joel, Why is it that the lightning and thunder are only present during the mature stage of the thunderstorm?
Lightning is created when water exists in 3 phases (vapor, liquid, solid) inside thunderstorms. The only way those 3 phases of water co-exist together is with the presence of a strong updraft. A strong updraft does exist in the development phase of thunderstorms and lightning IS possible in developing storms, but precipitation (ie. rain/snow) will have already formed when all 3 phases of water co-exist for lightning production. That formed precipitation will cause a downdraft to form. By definition, as soon as a storm develops a downdraft, it has entered into the mature phase. Its a bit of a definition based technicality why lightning only exists in a mature storm - precipitation development plays a role in lightning creation but also causes downdraft creation, which moves the thunderstorm from "development" to "mature" phase. Thunder only exists in the mature phrase because it exists only when lightning creates it. Does it make sense why lightning doesn't exist in the decay phase? Thanks again for the question. I'm happy to answer questions here, but I may not be able to get to them as quickly as your current instructor - its a best practice to keep them within the online classroom. I'm happy to help you get the most out of your online classroom experience though. Thanks again for utilizing these videos! I appreciate the feedback!
Thanks heaps for your answer. I actually like the way you explain things, that is why I like your videos so much. Very easy to understand!!
Thanks Joel for your videos. You have helped me understand the material heaps!
Thanks Pete. I'm glad the videos are helpful! Are you enrolled in APUS SCIN 137?
Yes I am, and I will say I was lost with this course- here is the book and go.... I haven't taken any science class in over 20 years. You are correct with week 5 being the most fun
Welcome back to the classroom! I'm not teaching at the moment so I'm glad I made these videos public. Did you happen upon them or did someone alert you to them? Thanks for using them!!
No, Thank you for making them!! I literally put Scin 137 in the search field in hope of someone out there having the same problem as me- not understanding this class. Thank you SOOO much!!! for these videos!
When your parents, your kids, or most adults watch this ; they will be very proud of you. Thks, TomB PS: However the older you get the more embarrassed you'll be when you watch it (be sure to watch it a few times when you're 65). That's just the way it goes.
Great explanation! Thank-you
love it
Wow. Now I am an absolute expert on this particular subject. Just wow.
