Riding adventure bikes over big loose rocks on Ophir Pass! CODBR Day 5 Part 2
We made base camp the night before and unloaded our bikes to the bare minimum tools/tire stuff to make running Imogene Pass (previous video) and Ophir Pass as easy as possible. We had a ton of fun going up and over into Telluride in Imogene Pass in prior video for lunch then in this video you'll see us come back over Ophir Pass then celebrate our successful passes!

Audio sounds good, what's your setup?
Thanks! It’s a GoPro hero 12 with media mod but I do have a plugged in mic (purple ape or something if that sort name) with a fuzzy filter on it to help with wind noise
Mountains and two wheels, what more could I ask for😎
I first rode Ophir in 2003. The upper section was in far better shape and didn't have the nasty boulder sections. I guess the forest service has decided to leave it more "challenging"?
It may be hard to tell but some of the challenge looks like a 2wd truck got stuck a few times making big dips from hard surface then you ramped out of it back onto rocks. I’m assuming it was a recent thing because all the videos I’ve seen have been halfway smooth like you said 😂
Makes me miss my KTM 625 LC4. the OG of adventure bikes
That bike and the 950 are legendary to see out in the wild!
You make Ophir (oh for goodness sakes) Pass look pretty easy...I didnt find it that much fun on a large bike. I did it on my GS 1100 a few years back and it was a challenge for me. Lots of big loose rock near the top on the San Miguel side. The San Juan side is pretty easy going. I would recomend doing it as early in the morning as possible to avoid the tourist traffic. Some people do this pass in large PU trucks and SUVs making passing them difficult. Your hard breathing is spot on. There was one fatal heart attack in recent years on Imogene Pass at about 11,000 (poor fellow had to pick up his bike repeatedly) so anyone thinking about it should make sure they are up for it. The county (San Miguel side) is good about keeping the gate locked just east of Ophir if the snow has not been cleared yet. I rode my E bike (MB) over the pass before the snow was cleared and it was a challenge huge driffts that had to be climbed on foot and carrying, dragging and lifting my bike. It would be hard to get a MC pass the locked gate but even if possible don't do it.
I would love to see these passes covered in snow! Just not on a motorcycle 🤣 MB would be fun I’ve never taken my MB anywhere but some trails or roads in Texas
I also ride a T7, did Ophir pass last summer (2024) the opposite direction as you. It was the first really rocky trail after getting a Scotts steering stabilizer, single best upgrade EVER
Always just thought of it for high speed stuff(started out sport bikes years ago). Makes sense it would help some with deflection! Thanks for sharing I haven’t heard all that much about them on ADV bikes
You are living the dream!
You're a badass. I don't ride big ADV bikes like you. Looked like a damn workout. I'll stick to my dual sport
@@Nobodyever-00 I’d like to take my dual sport next time 🤣 there are a bunch of trails that branch off the BDR that would be perfect for smaller lighter dual sports
Great ride. Great video clarity and editing.
You absolutely crushed ophir pass especially on a big bike good job man !!
Thank you! It was hard to carry momentum with all the stops, and then picking up and pushing other bikes got me pretty winded 🤣

Yeah I really like the sound of it too! Main reason for a tenere 700 lol
I that an Akro that you are running?
@@DrDanTDC it’s a black widow header and y pipe to a cheap knock off exhaust. At the time I was putting stuff on bike there wasn’t many enduro bend exhaust that weren’t $500+.. I did get it dyno tuned and it had no power issues with good air flow. May just be louder than some people would want though.
Excellent video guys. What tires were you running and how long did They last Thanks I appreciate the videos
running Michelin Anakee Wild front tire and then rear is Motoz Tractionator Adventure which i run a 140/80/18. It's pretty cheap compared to the 150 but some people don't want to use it because of the chance if tire goes flat at speed it could come off bead easily and not be good. I've had no issues with that. Tire life this is my first full rear i bought a previously used 1 first. I'd guesstimate 4-6k easily. Fresh they seem to wear fast but once you get heat cycles in and wear about halfway down they just stay there for a while and wear slowly.
Video never does it justice. I've been on those passes and people don't realize how steep those climbs and descents are along with how rocky it is. Well done.
Still looks incredible on video but you're right the drops and climbs don't translate well over video unless your brain can realize the GoPro effect lol
Another great video of our adventure! Thanks Jared! It’s too bad you can’t see how damn steep those roads are.
Right?! Still looks crazy even with the GoPro effect.
good video
Hi Mr. Smith. I think you rode really well. Thanks for sharing the video with us. I have a couple of questions for you. Was this route part of the BDR? Also, did the T7 keep cool during that climb? Is it a concern? Any overheating problems?
Hey! so this is northwest/west of Durango, CO and was not part of the BDR. I was waiting for the rest of my group to get there the next day so went exploring what i could find on OnX. I believe part of the trail was called "helmet peak". I had my T7 dyno tuned at Texas super bikes and then the guy made the fan cut on @200f and cut back off at 192f. So in the videos you may hear the fan running a decent amount because it did get up in the high 70's weather and as you can tell a lot of climbing. The T7 has pretty good fans though so it can bring temps down quick. I never went above 201f. I also full exhaust with no cat so that may affect where you'd prefer temps to run.
Great vids and looks like nice time of year to ride the route. Nice campsite by river at end of Day 3… do recall the camp area?
from lake city, it's the road going to engineer pass route "20" maybe? anyways camp site was on the left side by henson creek after you pass the hidden treasure dam
Thanks for sharing!

@@normanschwartz5779 funny timing I just got my double take mirrors and just put it on my 450 and about to put them on the T7!

Awesome great show fantastic place to ride. I just love the sound of the T7 music to my ears and heart. I am so going to get one after I sell the KLR😊
@@kipper2942 sit on one and mess with it first make sure it’s not “top heavy” for you. Honestly any bike is heavy in this category unless you go get a 450/500 dual sport or 690/701. I enjoy it for what it is and what it’s capable of just don’t want to have it fall on my leg 🤣 I can pick it up just fine but it’ll do damage if it lands on you
Great vid, where did you get on that pass out of Gypsum? I was out there in Sept and could not find it, ended up somewhere in between Gypsum and El Jabel.
It was in the BDR route we downloaded maybe there was a detour around it that you may have taken before? It’s called hagerman pass though. There are later days that we did go off the BDR path exploring and doing some of the challenging passes but I believe other than that we stuck to the main route and took the hard routes when it did separate to a bypass
Sounds like you got on Cottonwood Pass road (one of three passes with that name) and went west instead of east. From Gypsum, go south on Valley to Gypsum Creek Road /FR 412. That will get you Sylvan Lake then go south over Crooked Creek Pass. That will spit you out on Frying Pan Road (CR 4), east of Reudi Reservoir. Head east over Hagerman or west to Basalt.
@@eddiememphis1 Thanks, appreciate that
why has this become so rough compared to a few years ago?
@@jamescox4823 like on hagerman pass? Or in general? I know different sections of the BDR seemed that some truck or vehicles had gone down the roads after a heavy rain because there were some big ol’ ruts there!
The bike sounds good.
Great job filming! Thanks!
Beautiful area! What month was this filmed?
it was end of September/beginning of October!
Good job Jered. Thanks for taking us along. I like when you show maps or at least where you start and end. I also like to see when you set up camp and talk about where you camp and how hard or easy it is to find a camp site. I will be attempting the CO BDR next year so I like the details. What date did you start this BDR and how was the weather? Thanks!
I really wish I would have filmed more camp stuff… hindsight right 🤣 I’ll work on learning some of the map stuff to show routes and places. Honestly camp sites weren’t to hard to come by we had a creek/river every night and never paid for a spot. We went end of September to beginning of october. 30-40’s at night and 60-75 during the day!
Frog bayou is is better if you ride it from east to west and hopefully on the dryer side, it can be a handful after a hard rain
@@stevehicks616 is that going by the graveyard first? I think that’s the direction we went was east to west and ended up by the graveyard or some plot of some sort

You should try and get some of that pack weight further forward, basically over the rear hub. Anything behind that point is constantly "catapulted" especially in that rough stuff! You can use the front crash bars as another storage point on each side. Rhinowalk makes a great 8L bag that connects securely to those bars. Adam Rieman (a T7 fanatic) www.youtube.com/@MotologyFilms has a RUclips channel where he explains this...
Yep! I'm subbed to him lol Honestly it was only about 10-15lbs that was on the seat. Bag had come off because the contents had settled and the way it straps allowed it to unhook itself. The heavy stuff was packed low and forward in the side bags. I was using the rhinowalk bags in this video but did just receive the giant loop great basin bag that i'm hoping to be able to run further up without affecting my riding position.
Such a vibrant scenery is here, so a decent quality 4K camera is mandatory. 😅
GoPro 12! some video on iphone14 pro and color grading helped! Colorado is a very pretty state though makes it easy lol
@@Jeredsmith Yay, I believe this should be enough to make the picture considerably better. Have you already tried using the highest picture quality settings? Like 5,3K60FPS? You might also want to look for any quality degradation during editing and exporting process in your video editing software. The best available quality for this video now is only 1080p. I think your footage deserves a better picture quality.
@@Dmitrii-z1m yea it's in the video editing process. What do you recommend render/export setting? without making the file HUGE. this was about 20-25gb video. Not sure what's normal?
@@Jeredsmith I've got to confess I'm not a big pro about the details, but the first things I would've check this: H.264 or H.265 (is better if available) codec, bitrate 60-80 Mbps for 4K60 video, the frame rate FPS like in the original video is preferable, resolution 3840 x 2160, two-pass encoding mode. The size between 20-25 GB is expected for the ouput with the settings above.
@@Dmitrii-z1m I need to change project settings for next video (not the one coming out soon) because i know I have it set at 1080p mainly because i only have 1080 monitors right now. THanks for the advice I'm going to change to 1440 or whatever above 1080 and see how it goes.
50lb of Luggage on a Tenere sounds wonderful... I just went on my first camping trp and had a similar amount of weight (23kg) on a bike that is 167kg dry. having that weight on a bike with 3 times the power and 50kg heavier (lke a Tenere with crash bars and bash plate) would have been like the luggage wasn't even there
It really wasn't too bad. I was hesitant the first few days just trying to be safe and make it the whole trip without injury. I'm hopefully doing a trip on my 450rl with similar luggage in February. I think the weight is more noticeable stopped than when in motion.
