Stars and Stripes Forever, 5 string banjo
Played on my 63’ Gibson RB170. I call it “Freestyle” banjo-single string and 3 finger picking.

This is an old tune called “Whistling Rufus”, often played by fiddlers. I’m playing a style I call “freestyle”, mixing a unique single string and 3 finger styles together. Played on a 26’ Weymann 5 string.

Combination of 3 finger picking and flat picking with the thumb pick. The ending isn't correct on my version.
Hey, i bought a 5 string banjo (a deering goodtime 2) and the song I wanna learn is tabbed on a 4 string. Can i still play it just by doing this?
Yes of course.
@@jonmiller9829 okay just wondering cause my banjo tuner says a 5 string is (G)DGBD and the 4 string is CGBD. I’m completely new to banjo but i have some guitar experience
@@manofhonor1685 5 string can be tuned with the low C also, it is what most original ragtime tunes were played in.
@@jonmiller9829 thanks for the quick replies. Im definitelt subbing after i write this comment. The song im trying to learn is “autumn beds” by modest mouse. Not sure on the tuning its hard to find a tab
Germany! My Mom’s side was Tiefebbach and Schmidt.
Sometimes I felt a little bit left alone in my Banjo endeavors here in Germany, trying to get an 17-fret to CGDA tenor tuning, or reuse my 5-string as a plectrum banjo for example. Great to see you sharing your tricks, that is helping a lot! Thanks!
Gracias Amigo!!!
I thinking about buying a plectrum banjo but, now that i see how easy it to make a five string a plectrum I’m even more happy with my banjo
THANK YOU I was about to make a much more permanent decision involving a belt sander haha
I have a 5 string and want to play 4 string style, do all banjos have the little notch? Thank you =]
You have to file one in, I use a small triangle file and just 1/8” or less.
@@jonmiller9829 oh ok thank you
Clever trick. I can actually see a place on my hoop where I can file out a little notch. Now I just need to spend several thousand hours learning plectrum.
Great. Saves me buying a four string banjo. Just pull 5th sting out of the way without removing and replacing each time. Thanks!
I always appreciate it when a banjo player shows his/ her new approaches and discoveries while working on his ideas. It can be a huge eye-opener for those who struggle ...
Excellent work and ideas! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Norm, I enjoy you guys- your daughter is an awesome fiddler player also!
And thank you, Jon! Do let us know if you're ever in or near Branson, Missouri. It would be a pleasure to meet. Blessings your way.
Can I use a set of medium 5 strings on a tenor
Yes if you’re turning it to true tenor banjo tuning CGAE, (bluegrass banjo is tuned gCGBD or gDGBD), so the 2 top strings will be pitched a whole step up, the E should be able to handle it.
That’s a great idea.
WOOOOOOWWWWW MAN!!!!!! THOSE HAPPY VIBES AT THE END
I have thinking about doing something like this, I am glad I am not the crazy one xD Thanks a lot Jon! I love both 4 and 5 string banjos and I didn't want to buy two instruments. hugs from Spain!
Love it :)
You are a genius, I'm a beginner and after watching some ten minutes long videos I came across this and in 2 minutes say it all. thank you very much
Thank you!
Could you make a tutorial for this?
I could send photos.?
How can I customize my banjo to do that?
It’s just a simple filled notch in the stretcher band.

@@jonmiller9829 could you do this with an electric?
@@addyendss737 I would imagine- I can picture a Deering-with the stretcher band.
If I were looking for an Irish tenor sound would I be able to achieve it with different string gauges and a capo do you think?
I play Irish banjo also, Irish banjo is normally played on the shorter neck tenor but I can play it with this setup. Irish is tuned GDAE, plectrum is CGBD, if I capo 2 and I hop over (don’t play) the 3rd (B) string- capoed I then have DAE- -I can play 90% of Irish Session tunes with those 3 strings.
Do you find the tone of the plectrum banjo is matched exactly or would you need a different kind of head for that?
Same, banjos are all the same components. Styles and techniques are different.
Right on
That's pretty awesome, and over the weekend I'm going to do the same thing! Thanks for the cool idea.
Love it. Nice to know there are others who aren't afraid to incorporate flatpicking in their 5-string styles.
Great stuff! Had my heart set on a 5 string and considering a 4 string. Interesting to see what you did with each.
that was fast...the blue flash. Thanks.
whats the name of the tunes? really nice !
