A Non Session
Saturday 18 January 2025 sailing on Strangford Lough.
The forecast promised up to 16 Kts from the south, however I think the reality was 7-10 Kts. I kept going as it was a lovely afternoon (about 7 degrees C) in the hope that the wind would appear...but it didn't. So no foiling today.

Strangford Lough on the wrong gear

Sunday 12 Jan, sailing from Cunningburn Car Park just south of Newtownards Sailing Club on Strangford Lough. Only brought my 1100 Freeride foil (on the 95 fuse) and was talked into rigging my 6m instead of the 7m by someone who came in allegedly overpowered! Given the forecast, I also set the RW on the -2 shim, but I needed the lift from a -1.5. Anyway, still a good winter's afternoon on the wa...

Sat 14 Dec 2024. A forecast wind of about 14 Kts only materialised late on, and even then was gusty given the direction, so a mediocre session with only some foiling. When up, the new longer 105 fuselage seemed more stable and forgiving than the 95 plus. Lots of activity at the club with the Irish Sailing Topper Squad out, RYA coached ILCAs and Fevas, plus a few recreational ILCA sailors.

First flight with my new foil setup: Evo 105 fuse, 900 FW and a 255 (-2) RW. The wind steadily got up from the time I stared rigging, and by the time I hit the water the gusts were the far side of 20 Kts making it quite sporty! Anyway, a good learning session, and a few tweaks required before I try that again. Thanks for watching!

Out on 22 Nov 24 from BYC in about 4 degrees C. Was forecast for about 12Kts of breeze from the west, but it didn't last and also kicked round to the SW as I came back in. Tried the new Forward neoprene helmet liner - a great bit of kit, keeping my head toasty warm. Sat 16 Nov 24, and the breeze is up for the first time in a while. I rigged my Foilglide 6m, and 800 Few with the -2 shim. I think it may have worked better with the -1.5 if the UJ had been forward, perhaps giving a more front foot feel. one to try next time... Great to be out with the Waszps, and a few kites, wings and of course our club 'Junior Icebreaker'. Thanks for watching.

In terms of setup, I had the 800 front wing and 330 rear (-1 shim) along with my Foilglide 8m - all ready for a steady, decent light breeze. Would you buy that board over RRD Firemove or Gecko for beginner - intermediate level flat water windsurfer?

    • @bobbinabout1317
      @bobbinabout1317 Месяц назад

      I haven't tried the Firemove, although owned a Fireride about 8-9 years ago as my first board (140L). It was a great board, fast, fun and stable. I think the Verso might be faster and more fun than the Gecko on a similar size (volume). I have owned a few Fanatic boards (had a Blast 130 for years - brilliant) and currently have a Fox 105 and a few Dynos (115 and 95). I think the Severne boards chip easier on the rails, so I would buy some rail tape. If you're looking to learn to carve gybe and generally progress, the Verso is likely to be a great board. The 3 sizes also suit that beginner-intermediate level. I think too many people try to go low volume too early. Have fun with the 138 or 154, particularly if you're a bigger rider, and they are likely to remain a good fun board even when your skills have improved. If you're more confident, the Fox (120 or 140) is a great, fast board for flat water (can try that on inboard footstrap positions to start with). Ideally have a go on a few to see which suits your level/potential the best. Hope that helps.

I have also sailed the 145, 115 and 100 in various locations, and all are great boards. I actually have a Dyno 115 and 95 - they are slower, more manoeuvrable and great in the chop. • @bobbinabout1317

      I had a Blast 130 before and one significant difference between it and the Futura I think is the buoyancy distribution - with less in the nose. I weigh around 83Kg and find the 120L ideal, with my biggest sail a Turbo 8.1m. Not sure of the benefit of losing that extra 10L, so personally I'd go 120.

      Hi, having done a foiling course last summer and had great success on the Severne Redwing (no tweaking except UJ position required), I recently tried sailing the Supercruiser rear foil with no (negative) pitch, however had the UJ right back and struggled to fly it. This was on the advice of Starboard UK comment. The last time I had it out 2 weeks back, I put the rear foil screws in the mid-position and UJ in the middle and had a much better experience again. I think you need to be fairly well powered sail-wise, and probably start with the rear foil set middle, UJ set-middle, and adjust from there. It's definitely more twitchy in pitch control than the Freeride and harder to learn on, so will probably look to sell it!

      I'm about 85 Kg and 175cm, so can get away with the 120L. My biggest sail currently is the 8.1 Turbo. Still waiting for the right conditions to get out for a good blast on it, and foiling creating in as a preferred lighter wind option! Thanks for watching.

      I’ve been trying to teach myself foiling, and this 2 days was a game changer. Once flying and in a position on top of the board, the weight in the sail is minimal and it’s just a question of fore and aft balance to maintain ride height. Coming home to more choppy conditions is a bit of a challenge, but really enjoying it. Thanks for watching.

    Enjoying your videos. I'm 58, used to windsurf in my 20's and looking to get back into sailing. Was thinking about getting an Aero or windsurfer, which do you prefer? was thinking of joining a sailing club to do a bit of club racing as was worried about solo windsurfing at the coast.

      I find the knees suffer a bit in the Aero, particularly in lighter weather. If I had to choose, I think I would go for the windsurfing! Thanks for watching.

    Now that you have had it for a while what do you think of it? Why did you chose 3.5 and 2.5 instead of 4.5 and 3.5?

    • @bobbinabout1317
      @bobbinabout1317 Год назад

      The Red WindSUPs were bought for the yacht club as training boards to deliver the RYA Start Windsurfing course (beginners). I already had 5 old hard boards and three 4.5m rigs, hence the reason for not buying more of them. The 3.5m seems ideal as a small adult or large child size, with the 2.5m for smaller kids (not yet fully tested). The boards seem to handle as well as the hard boards, tracking well upwind, although maybe 'spongy' compared to tippy in feel when moving stance. I think that is likely due to the increased height above the surface of an inflatable board. The only thing to watch is the screw in UJ - I have found twice at the end of a morning or afternoon session it has nearly unscrewed itself. Would I buy again - yes.

    Thanks for the video , I’m at at a similar stage to you , its tough and taking longer than I thought it would. Question are you happy with your Gator sails ? I have some on order. Best Dave

    • @bobbinabout1317
      @bobbinabout1317 Год назад

      Yes, I've got a 4, 5, 5.5, 6.5 and 8 Gator, plus a 6, 7 and 8.1 Turbo. The Gators are robust for improving and I think are a good all round sail. The Turbos I'm just getting used to, but seem more powerful but in a manageable way. It would be really useful if Severne offered more info on setting both types them up (for different conditions).

    Thank you for the video. How does it handle with a bit of chop? Does it slice through waves well?

    • @bobbinabout1317
      @bobbinabout1317 Год назад

      Because it's inflatable and is deeper than a hard board, it tends to ride higher anyway. So the experience I've had so far with it has been in small chop, where it handles it ok. The real benefit with these boards is their weight when compared to a similar size beginners board in 'hard' construction.

      Thanks for the informative video. Does it manage to plain effectively? My daughter is a beginner but my wife is intermediate, so hoping it would meet both their needs (with a smaller rig for my daughter)

    • @bobbinabout1317
      @bobbinabout1317 Год назад

      @@AdrianxGill we're using them at the club for the RYA Start Windsurfing course, so now experience trying one in planing conditions. I do see someone locally on a similar WindSUP and it will plane. The biggest issue would be there are no footstraps, so whilst you could sail in teh harness, you can't lock yourself in!
