I understand the sentiment, but it's very easy to talk about what to do from the sidelines without full context. This is coming as a peer, who is average at competitive Pokemon at best. Gengar is a special attacker, and only has focus blast really. drain punch, brick break, focus punch, and tera blast-fighting are the only alternatives for fighting coverage. Three of which are physical (bear in mind, rock and steel have the highest average defense, Gengar's attack is abysmal, and running physical moves means you can't as safely switch in to tanks burns) And tera-blast fighting is bad for pretty ubiquitous reasons It's not a case of "big damage=better". I mean, people consistently avoid frenzy plant, hydro cannon, and blast burn. What it boils down to is Gengar brings specific things to the table, but can get shut down by some dark/rock/steel pokemon. None of his other moves bring enough damage to the table to deal with them, and switching makes you lose an incredible amount of tempo. It's a case of 30% chance of losing Gengar, or 100% chance of losing Gengar. A guaranteed chip damage just isn't nearly as valuable in the metagame, for a variety of reasons. Lastly, the threat of focus blast isn't something to sleep on. if I see that my opponent is running a ohko focus blast, I will attempt to optimize my odds, by playing around it. I'd rather maneuver my pokemon in a way so that my odds of winning an engagement are better than 30% If my t-tar is up against a confirmed focus blast Gengar, I'm less inclined to send it in. If it's a confirmed brick break Gengar, I could use that to set up a d-dance and potentially sweep. The mere presence of focus blast forces your opponent to play differently, in perhaps a less optimal way then they could otherwise. This isn't fully targeted towards you, I know you mostly meant your comment as a harmless meme. I just see a lot of backseat professionals in a lot of settings, be it sports, writing, or videogames, who have very little grasp of what all is occurring behind the curtain. As a preemptive afterthought: Yes, I saw that someone else commented on the Hisuian Zoroark, and I think there's quite a large distinction there. Zoroark gets some better mileage defensively from fighting then Gengar does (resisting every former weakness vs resisting 1 former weakness, maintaining some, and picking up others) And Zoroark gets better mileage from base Tera-blast, being STAB boosted, and only ten damage short of the commonly used Hyper Voice.

@wishfulwaffle4801 I get the point between the gamble of focus blast on gengar, but having a 110-120 BP move that has no way of boosting accuracy without an item or with weather (thunder, blizzard, etc), is way too much of a gamble for even mid game situations, take a look at some VGC footage of people using tornadus + bleakwind storm Having fighting coverage is great, but if anything you're better off with a different mon that has close combat with the same BP, and Aura Sphere for any physical defensive switches. Go for focus blast anytime, but I'm not going to rely on a 30% chance to lose my mon or the whole game to get the same amount of damage I could've gotten if I went into a fighting type with CC

@@Dumb-Canadian Yeah, in a vacuum, close combat or aura sphere are pretty unanimously considered better than focus blast, and Gengar is a mid pokemon, but depending on the acceptable pokemon in the format and what you need in a team, you've got to compromise. Gengar fills specific niches of being a spin-blocker, outspeeding even some d-dance sweepers with scarf, revenge killer, etc. Missing a single shot is also usually less impactful in a singles format, which has more pokemon and more turns. Again, focus blast isn't a great choice, it's just one of the best 4th move slots so that you can utilize all of Gengar's other great features.
