Wilddog Africa Overland
Южно-Африканская Республика
Добавлен 29 дек 2019
We are a couple of over landers who are crazy about Africa and crazy about the bush. We are hikers and super keen birders. We are tree nerds. Our channel will publish videos documenting our travels in Southern and Eastern Africa. We love a challenge and gravel road mountain passes are our 'thing'. We often find the road less travelled to be more scenic and often more interesting. We have just tackled Van Zyl's Pass a major bucket list item. In our next series of videos releasing in July 2024 we will visit the Skeleton Coast in Namibia, Angola, back to Namibia and into Botswana via the Caprivi. We believe that if you are not living life on the edge you are takin' up too much space!
VanZyls Pass 2024
Rod and I embarked on a solo journey through Van Zyl’s Pass, a challenging 4x4 route in northern Namibia. Despite my initial apprehension, we navigated all of the obstacles successfully. The scenery was astonishing and we spent some time enjoying our surroundings. At the very end, literally 10 meters from the dry river bed that marks the end of the pass, we confronted a rock which split and pierced our tyre. After traversing the Joubert's Pass and spending the night at the Marble Hill Community Campsite we decided to return to Opuwa to replace it and plan our route into Angola.

Skeleton Coast Part Two
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.Месяц назад
In Part Two Rod and I and the rest of the gang visit the wreck site of the Dunedin Star, fish up an absolute feast for supper and spend two nights at Camp Cunene. We then head over the dunes. Rod and I were bogged down twice but we were soon rescued and on our way again. We encounter our first of Trevor Knott's Stone Men and say goodbye to our friends and head into Opuwo for a couple of days be...
Skeleton Coast Part One
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.Месяц назад
Rod and I had booked a trip to the Skeleton Coast with Namib Desert Tracks. We would travel all the way up to the Cunene River along the unforgettable Atlantic coast and through the dunes. The desert is stark, wild and mysterious. In Part One we spend some time getting to know the Atlantic and our fellow travellers. We met some wonderful people and I don't think our outlook on life will ever be...
Sandwich Harbour Day Trip
Просмотров 8472 месяца назад
Rod and I took a day trip to Sandwich Harbour with Deon from Photo Ventures Namibia. The weather was typical of the Namibian coast - fog and mist with patches of sunshine. The highlight of the tour for me was hunting for the Webbed Foot Gecko and Rod really enjoyed the experience of driving in the dunes - he got so many tips about driving in the thick sand which was good input for our planned t...
LandCruiser 200 - upgrading the filter.
Просмотров 1253 месяца назад
This is a wee departure from our normal travel videos. After returning from our last adventure we spent a week cleaning the Cruiser. There was dust EVERYWHERE. Rod then started going through the Cruiser and inspecting it and he made the decision to upgrade our air filter to a Donaldson Air Filter. Donaldson South Africa put us in contact with Kenny from Filtration and Transmission Specialists -...
Kgalagadi 2024 The Land of Thirst after the rain
Просмотров 6973 месяца назад
Rod and I began our 2024 trip in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. It was our first visit to the KTP and we were not certain what to expect but we positively loved it and are excited to return. We stayed on the South African end of the park as our exit would pop us into Namibia. In Namibia we were to join a Skeleton Coast tour after which we tour Northern Namibia - tackle Van Zyl's and head int...
Arusha National Park

Rod and I were beyond impressed with Arusha National Park. We were camping at Twiga Lodge which is on the doorstep of the Park and we decided to take a day tour with Paul Shaw into the Arusha NP. The weather was not great but we managed to enjoy the views of Mount Meru. We felt like we had been transported into a tropical rainforest. the birding was great - the Lakes support huge flamboyant pop...
Serengeti - The place where the land runs forever.
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Rod and I finally reached the Serengeti. Tanzania is huge and colourful and noisy and so very very friendly. It took us many days to get there and we viewed each day as a new adventure. As our poor rand is not worth very much we had allocated 2 days in the Serengeti and we maximised every moment. It was early spring and in the north the grass was showing green shoots - mostly due to recent fire...
Enroute to the Serengeti 2023
Просмотров 3057 месяцев назад
Our journey through Tanzania continues - man what a beautiful country! As we explore more we find more to love. The people in Tanzania could be the friendliest in Africa. Even the police manning the barriers are friendly. All the people we meet in the villages are so welcoming - it certainly is Africa in all its vibrant glory and noise and chaos but it's happy and charming and you have to go an...
Lake Tanganyika - a beach holiday in East Africa
Просмотров 4548 месяцев назад
After leaving Zambia in company with Tracy and Frans once again we all began what would be a considerable trek en route to the Serengeti National Park. Our first port of call in Zambia would be the LakeShore Lodge which was a bit of pampering for all of us.
Hope the Shoebill
Просмотров 4548 месяцев назад
Rod and I travelled to the Bangweulu Wetlands to find the Shoebill. We spent 3 days in the domba and fell into the rhythm of the bush and the water. We found 5 or possibly 6 new species and met one of the most dedicated conservationists we have ever met - Maggie Hirschauer who runs the Shoebill Captive Rearing and Rehabilitation Facility in collaboration with African Wildlife Conservation Found...
Luangwa

Rod and I travel to South Luangwa National Park and then onto North Luangwa National Park in August of 2023. We discover that the roads in Zambia are really scary and that travelling any distance takes a lot longer than one would think. We enjoyed our trip and treated ourselves to the luxury of a tented camp at Samara Camp on the banks of the Mwalesi River.
Mana Pools Trip - August 2023. Meet some wonderful elephants on the banks of the Mighty Zambezi.
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.9 месяцев назад
Tracy, Frans, Rod and I had planned 2 days at Mana Pools. It took us 3 days to get there from Kazangulu . The last part of the trip was on the road to Chirundu which is a major goods transit route - it was rough. We enjoyed our time at Mana Pools with its fabulous elephants and spectacular trees.
Linyanti to Kasane via Savuti - August 2023
Просмотров 2 тыс.9 месяцев назад
Tracy and Frans and Jorge and Bela and Rod and I left Khawi and travelled to Linyanti. We got stuck in the sand multiple times so Jorge and Bela decided to ditch the trailer - about 8kms north of Savuti. We finally arrived at Linyanti to a spectacular sunset. We found Edward Bath and Jono camping at Campsite 2 and Jorge and I had quite a chat with them about the situation and whether we would f...
Moremi to Khwai - July 2023
Просмотров 13 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Jorge and Bela and Frans and Tracy and Rod and I spent 5 days in Moremi and from there we headed to Khwai. We took a river crossing instead of a bridge which lead to an exciting recovery. We did some excellent game viewing and some great birding. We experienced zero degrees and put our outdoor gear to good use. Moremi may just be the best that Botswana has to offer.

Ben 10 Eco Challenge December 2022 Day 1
Good evening and thank you for sharing your experience, question please, love your Land Cruiser, what mode dit you use to get down VanZyls, also I think you had BF Goodrich tyres right, what bar dit you have them on, last one, Rob my wife wants to know what tablets your wife took to stay so calm😅 😅
Hi guys - we used low wheel drive where it was needed and rock mode on the hairy scary section. We ran the BF Goodrich All Terrains 2.4 back and 1.8 in the front - we are fairly heavy. Bear in mind the BFs don't like to run too soft because of potential cracks on the side wall - this is our experience and we picked up a couple of cracks on the dunes in Nam. Rod has since had all the tyres checked and they are all still good but they look um 'well worn'. Because we were solo my wife had to step up and she was concentrating very hard on being a good navigator and enjoying the scenery . We had also watched a lot of videos so we knew what to expect.
What an epic adventure grat episode thanks for sharing
Hey Shaun so glad you enjoyed. let me know when you are planning to take it on and we will give you some tips
@wilddogafricaoverland Will for sure thanks👊
My God! How daunting😮😮😮
I have so much faith in the Cruiser and so much faith in Rod's driving but it was scary.
How long did the van zyl pass took you to complete ?
@@riaanhorn200 hi Riaan - it took us around 4 & 1/2 to 5 hours but that includes all the filming we did. and we were on our own so we were perhaps extra cautious. what we had not factored is how long it actually takes to get anywhere to camp after Van Zyl's . But it was grand!
@wilddogafricaoverland thank you. Family and I plan to tick off van zyl pass also from our bucket list.
CFM SOMERSET WEST CAPE TOWN SOUTH AFRICA
Thanks sir for your explanation how we must drive there thanks alot i am now experiencing something as next month i am coming that side from south africa cape town
Hi What route have you planned? Our Skeleton Coast trip began in Henties Bay which is easily accessible from either Walvis Bay or Swakopmund. We entered Namibia in the South as we had travelled through the Trans Kgalagadi National Park . From Henties Bay you can travel to Terrace Bay which is a Namibia Wildlife Resort but you cannot travel much further north without a guide.
@@wilddogafricaoverland will be coming from cape town using N7 to Vioolsdrift passing border to windhoek via B1 from windhoek to swakopmund from there to henties bay after there i will see by i have to go in a desert
Lovely, its amazing that such a stark environment can be beautiful at the same time
Thanks Rob - we really live in a beautiful part of the world.
The sign board says no to everything. So why even bother going there. Boycott the place if you can't even catch and release a fish
It really was beautiful and driving on the dunes was a lot of fun.
Love the video
@@calumlabuschagne6460 thanks Calum
The roads look very good. Could this be done on a 2 WD?
@@crispinswainstonharrison9042 hi thanks for your question. There are parts of the road that are fine for 2WD - what vehicle are you driving and in which season do you plan to go ?
Great stuff! Very informative.
Nice camping spots. Content as always epic. Thanks for sharing mooi loop
Thanks for the comments always appreciate feedback
👏👏
Thank you
Do you need to book the sites or can one just book on arrival ? If not where do you book that sites?
Hi Eugene - forgive the reply we just arrived back yesterday from Namibia, Angola, Namibia again and Botswana. you don't book the sites - when you go into the park (assuming you are self-drive and camping) you can nominate a public campsite but there is no formal booking so if you change your mind you can go elsewhere. we would really recommend entering the park in the North and making your way down. Pls let me know if you need more info - I do have a map somewhere
Thank you for this. Does this apply to the full of Botswana? I’m not someone that likes to plan when I am on an adventure. So pre booking will not work for me. So you saying I can just cross the border and explore and find camp site . That’s great. 🙏
Hi. If you are going via Maun there are the offices for Xomae group and Kwalate Safaris in Maun (one of them is in the same centre as the OLD Woolies upstairs from FNB & the other is in the shopping centre across the road) or you can hit the Xomae group website - or the Kwalate Safaris website . www.xomaesites.com/ onty@xomaecamps.co.bw Third Bridge Moremi, Bains and Nxai Pans South Camp www.kwalatesafaris.com/ kwalatesafari@gmail.com Xakanaxa, South Gate Moremi & Ihaha We have always booked for Moremi and Chobe and also Bains at Nxai Pans. This year we were going to wing it but see below. When I was booking at the Savuti Khwai Linyanti Office early in June 2024 (at the Chobe gate couple of kms outside of Kasane) for camping in Linyanti the lady behind me said that the park wanted to see her camping voucher before they let her in. We had hoped to go into MOREMI at the North Gate but without a booking & after chatting about it a lot we decided on 4 days at the Khwai Safari grounds (just outside of Moremi) & close to the North Gate. it was grand. but other than that we don't book . So we still have not tested if you can just go into Moremi without a booking. Next year we may go to the Magotho Campsite - also on the boundary of Moremi. I think the interesting thing about all of this is that each gate has a Botswana National Park office that you check in with and then depending site at the gate or close by there will be the office for the local campsite but depending on which entry gate you go into there may not be an 'office' for the camping concession.
hi Eugene I think I need to clear something up. The first reply about not booking the sites is with regards to the Serengeti. I'm really sorry if I can confused this situation.
Animals sighting epic. Thanks for sharing WAO
You are so welcome - we had a blast. I would return to Tanzania tomorrow (although it’s a long way from Angola where we are at the minute)
You have a lovely calm voice 😀
Morning Elephants are walking in the river is so beautiful. Thank you for taking is on your safari. If one had to choose between Tanzania and Botswana, which country and national park would you recommend. Thank you so much.
Mabele not visible on Google Earth ☹️! Haven’t tried Tracks4Africa yet. Campsite by River near Kasane ……. ? Tembe River Camp …… ? Thnx
Name of Lagoon, mentioned as being worth a visit - between South Gate & 3rd Bridge ? Pls Alos thoughts on Audi Camp, Maun. We are doing a Round-Botswana Camping self-drive self-guided self-catering etc in Aug 2025 (early planning) with Start/End Point of Maun, Overnight in Maun pre-vehicle collection, so no kit yet . Ideas / Recommendations ?
Hi forgive the delay we have just returned from Namibia, Angola, Namibia again & then Botswana. the Lagoon is the Xini Lagoon . Audi camp is great - we were there for two days in June. The campsite is well appointed if you want to camp but generally we stay in one of their tents - generally next to the restaurant . Their food is good and well priced for Maun.
Dis regtig mooi foto grafie puik boskamp op sy beste daai leeu wat so stadig by die Cruiser loop epic dankie vir deel WAO.
Looks like a fantastic place
It really was - get your bum to Tanzania :-). I don't know if I stressed enough just how friendly and welcoming the people are in Tanzania.
Name of Town / Village mentioned around 8.08 ?
Sorry - slightly confused. Your Routing appeared to be Khwai, Mbabe Gate, Savuti, Marsh River Road (where was the Shell Station, Linyanti Camp, then up to Kasane PR am I wrong ? Am planing for that in Sept 2025, hence keen to,know. We might head for Ihaha Camp en-route to Kasane though Driving time from Linyanti to Kasane ….. ? Thnx
hi we went from Khwai to the Mbabe Gate and through Savuti . There are two options through to Savuti - the Marsh Road and the Sand Road - check at the Mbabe Gate as to which is in best condition at the time. once you get to Savuti you can check again which road is in best condition - earlier in the day is a better option, the route was confusing as we had to ditch a trailer and then get fuel and then return for it. the village we refuelled at is called Mabele its about 50 or 60kms from Kasane. Linyanti to Kasana is around 4 hours depending on the road. one caution - I have seen other videos stating that they had had issues at Linyanti and Ihaha but its a year or more before you go. if you can get the Shell Tourist Map of Botswana (Travel and Field Guide) that would be a win. or the Tracks4Africa book. its one of Veronica Roodt's - I see it on shop.briza.co.za/categories/maps/veronica-roodt.html?p=2
What time of the year were you there?
good morning - we were there in the middle of August of 2023. its actually a good time of year to go coz the rivers are low, the grass is not too think. its warm but not horribly hot and you can feel spring in the air
Thanks for sharing your trips with us! We are leaving on 9th April to do Southern Namibia and also Botswana. What do you use to do your filming?
@@davidkelroe-cooke4766 hi David - we use a couple of things. So I have a GoPro which I use for close up work. Just upgraded to a DJI Mic 2. oh & Rod has the new DJI Drone Mini 4 Pro (the last drone had an argument with a macula tree ;-)) We have a SENA Prism (from Rod's motorcycle helmet) on the roof of the car. For Photos Rod has an iPhone 13 Pro and also a Nikon CoolPix 1000 - he takes all the photos as I'm clueless. I hope you have a wonderful trip - maybe we will see you on the road - we leave for Namibia via the Kgalagadi on the 27th of March.

It is Wookiee Wagu Beef Biltong
Met you guys at the Kigongo-Busisi ferry in Mwanza Tanzania, quite a nice rig yous got
thanks so much - we could go back to Tanzania tomorrow.
Wolud you say going up is equally doable as going down ?
There were parts that felt tougher and clearly no maintenance is being done but we didn't have any particular issues. I would caution that it was really late in winter when we did it - so although they may have had a wee bit rain there was not a lot of water about - that road would be really scary after rain
Thanks very informative
Actually we wanted to to cover the same route but we failed on the halfway.
Hi Chen- I'm sorry to hear that but that road is really tough. This year we did the Leopards Hill from Chirundu to Lusaka - the scenery was fabulous but the road was so scary in places . the views were just spectacular. We have just returned from 3 months on the road so I'll be posting so much in the coming weeks.
.
Great video and informative. Please make a video on the bookings, pricing where to stay over, food allowed to take with. Water situation and river crossings. Not a lot of people make these informative videos. Thanks a lot.
Hi Jan - I'm so glad you enjoyed. We have just returned from Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Malawi and I will 100% be adding this information to our upcoming videos and also the fuel situation in each country as that differs from country to country as well as how to exchange money /ATM situation etc. If you have any specific questions pls drop me a line . And if you are planning a trip right now don't forget Tanzania - we spent 24 days there and I could go back tomorrow !
I enjoyed the video with seeing so many animals in one segment! Great sightings and excellent execution with the videography and capturing the story😊
Hi - thanks so much for your comment. We have just returned from Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Malawi. So much more content to come
Love the hippo and the birds. Don't love the "road" 😮

@@wilddogafricaoverland Generous of you. Thank you.
Enjoyed the video. Thank you. If you don't mind, I would like to know how many nights did you camped in CKGR and which campsites you like. Was it early May, seems very cold weather. Thank you.
Very good video! In the video you mentioned a camera you used on the roofrack, but I have problem to hear the the type and make. Can you write that in the comment?
Beautiful. Nice video. Love the trip down the escarpment.
Thanks so much Rory
Do you have GPS coordinates or pin location for this pass. We would also really like to do it. Thanks for great video

Hi Barry - I would also highly highly recommend the Mountain Passes South Africa website - they don't have this pass but they have just about every other pass worth driving ! I spoke to the chap who runs the site - Robby Roberts (we did his Ben 10 tour last year) and he did not know about it. I have uploaded a couple of days of the Ben 10 and im going to upload more - you can search for them - it was phenomenal.
