Dealing With a Knee Shield While Passing Half Guard | BJJ | PART 1
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.9 месяцев назад
I like to break the knee shield into a few scenarios: * High knee shield * Low, shallow knee shield * Low, deep knee shield (usually an incorrect way to play). The technique in this video works on all of them except the low, DEEP knee shield (where the knee comes across, toward or past your centerline). The deep knee shield is susceptible to sprawling methods, which we will cover in future part...

This is probably the single quickest thing you apply to your game to make instant improvements to holding mount. Your whole mount game should revolve around having multiple ways to steal and maintain inside position with the knee, so that your opponent cannot escape and you can start isolating limbs and attacking submissions. #bjj #nogi #bjjmount #adcc #gordonryan #johndanaher #newwave #jiujits...

Here are 3 techniques you need when you're in cross ashi garami with your partner on their knees trying to smash you. She should extend her arms out when she breakfalls, you can hit the back of your head.
Very Nice technique 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@@Surfskatestreet thanks!
Great info! 👍
@@stephaniecruz6250 Glad it helped!
My toe broke just looking at the tape on those mats. j/k I learned a few things. Thank you!
@@createthiscom been on my list to retape for awhile. 😅
I'm think the fact that you are more taller, make the armpit grip, better for you. For some one more shorter the elbown grip, tend's to work better. Because the elbown is more closer.
For self defence against big guys arm drag to single leg was advised by a purple belt at my gym.
@@BenWeeks-ca interesting 🧐. Thanks for the comment.
very nice
@@Merrick thanks!
Nice-so you basically use sass to cause a scramble of sorts and eatable better grips?

Came here to comment after 6 months... this basically became my favorite thing to do from butterfly half as long as I can catch that far shoelace :D
@@chenchi6623 Really appreciate you coming back to comment and attest. Glad you were able to add it into your game 💪🙏

Would you consider cross ashi a useful position for white belts, given that attacking the trapped leg is illegal? Is it a good sweeping position in the same way that straight ashi is? It looks like it would be hard to consistently get to top position, and I don't want to get berimbolo'd in the process :/ Sick song btw!
@@danielfisher3368yes, just make sure you try to keep the overwrap grip on the secondary leg until you’ve secured top position, so you can keep your opponent down. I used cross ashi entries a lot in IBJJF prior to brown belt when heel hooks became legal. Check out Gordon Ryan in 2018 Pans/Worlds. He used them to sweep, since that was before heel hooks were legalized.
@@flowtheorygrappling Thanks for the help! Just watched his match against Patrick Gaudio on your reccommendation. Perfect example of what I was asking about. Fellow white belts take note: ruclips.net/video/D59wCZxCOOM/видео.html
How do you avoid guillotines from that sit-up gaurd position at 3:40 ? Is it just a matter of staying out at an angle and maintaining good head position?
Yes, angle and head position mostly. If they’re squaring up with you to snatch your head, you can use the hook behind their butt to put knock them to their hands.
Great stuff! Is part 2 available?
Not yet. I need to get back to my regular posting schedule 😅.
thanks, i get smashed alot from this position so this was EXACTLY the options I needed to try out.
Hope it helps!

Very helpful, thanks!!

How about from the bottom player? How can you keep from getting a smashed knee shield from larger opponents? I feel like there’s not much I can do to stop my shield from getting smashed.
Knee elbow connection with a high knee shield. Discussed in my last video actually. Must be disciplined with cross shoulder frame and staying on side and contracted. Also easier if you can put attacking pressure from bottom by using off balances, without losing defensive responsibility.
Good info, glad I got to get this on this channel!

Good stuff

What do you call this besides a hip switch
@@stevenforrest4499 I don’t have another name for it. Not sure if anyone else calls it something different. Thanks for the comment
That knee shield with a cross shoulder post has made a huge difference in my ability to annoy my opponents in half guard. 😁 🙏 Also, with that counter to the arm weave, is it like a slight reverse shrimp to get your hips more under your opponent so you can flare the knee shield more easily instead of getting collapsed from being too far on your side?
More like a hip heist action, taking my knee under myself if needed. 🙌
Let me know below what topics y’all would like to see next or explore in more detail!
I’m working on these entries specifically but am getting stuck when my partner butterflies his foot over my bottom leg. The one I am grabbing his shoelaces on and then he sprawls and is getting a d’arce bite on my head. I can’t invert or backstep because he’s hooking that bottom leg with that foot. And, he is breaking posture with the head grip and I’m stuck. Any suggestions on where to go or what to try
I think this video will help: ruclips.net/video/1XgfjHTUIUo/видео.htmlsi=OmG23KXBZygv0Ze2 A) when your partner sprawls, he opens up the upper body to attacks (see video above) B) when he uses a butterfly hook from top half guard, his base is compromised to that side, so you can use sumi gaeshi, and also pair with the move in the video above. C) when using a cross lat (or cross shoulder) post, make sure your hand is flush to your partner’s body. If your hand drifts into open air and your elbow starts to come too far across his body, that can open you up to the darce. Let me know if that helps.
@@flowtheorygrappling will continue to work with it. Thanks for the response
Great video, keep it up! How do you deal with them posting on both your hips (without inside position) and performing thr kipping escape?
Thanks for the feedback! To deal with (most variations of) the kipping escape, posture up and push off the mat with your hands to push your weight back onto their hips and flatten them out. Kipping works well when the weight comes off the top person's hips and starts loading into the upper body, such as when crossfacing. Kipping is very poor when weight is back on the hips.
@@flowtheorygrappling thanks for the reply, that clarifies it!

Jacob Couch does a very similar style of this entry...
good content your uke looks like a flyweight guy lol
Thanks! Yeah, he’s on the smaller side 🙃
Good details. I've found more success with the foot on the same hip as the leg I'm attacking than the cross hip, like the way Lachlan entered in the video you referenced. It does require a little more hip flexibility but if you have the top leg as a frame in between you and their chest, it makes it easier to make that angle. Cheers!
Thanks for the comment! Yes, my understanding is the near hip is useful for making the initial catch (especially vs pressure), while the far hip is to prevent someone from exploding/spazzing away after the catch. You’ll notice Lachlan starts with the near hip and ends with the far hip. Why/when to use which hip is something that took me awhile to understand.
@@flowtheorygrappling agreed, good distinction.
Less music please
Thanks for the feedback! Was testing it out on this one. Hopefully the instruction was still clear.
Nice 🤙🏼, very easy to follow instructions!
Awesome to hear 👂 😎
Thanks for going over this entry, as always. I am still learning where to find the heel hooks and such. I tend to forget the heel hook is there in favor of the calf slicer, but the heel hook seems like a safer entanglement to transition from.
The calf slicer or backtake are there if they slip the knee from backside 50/50. Thanks for the comment 🎉
Hope y’all found this helpful! Thanks @thesymphonyofpain for the video idea. This is by no means an exhaustive list of k guard entries, but hopefully serves as a good intro.
This was a fantastic system of the simplest fundamentals. Very efficient yet leads to many options. And low risk. It's perfect and beyond criticism. Some videos are just that good!
