Salt Marsh Erosion: Living Shoreline Explained
When salt marshes calve like icebergs, prevention of continued erosion is nearly impossible. The principal of creating a living shoreline below this eroding high salt marsh is explained in this short video filmed by Dan Brielmann a few years ago.

The salt marsh is eroding in front of an old landfill in Saugus, Massachusetts. Continued erosion can threaten the landfill closure plans.
Hydrological Evaluation of Tidal Restrictions at Rumney Marsh in Saugus and Revere, Massachusetts

Efforts to remove an abandoned highway embankment from Rumney Marsh have been thwarted to date, based on the belief that the embankment was providing flood protection. Completed in 2012, the reconstruction of three bridges on state Route 107 improved the tidal hydrology to the marsh to improve recreation, decrease erosion, and control invasive species. A new study of the tidal hydrology has rev...

Crescent marsh was named for it's crescent shape formed when a roadway was constructed to provide access a landfill in Saugus, Massachusetts. The undersized 48-inch corrugated metal culvert installed in 1977 rusted and collapsed blocking tidal flow and freshwater drainage. The typical New England high salt marsh environment subsequently changed to a Phragmites dominated marsh. MA DOT installed ...
Mitigating Environmental Impacts from the I-95 Abandoned Highway Embankment Fill at Rumney Marsh

Pre-recorded presentation for June 8, 2021 presentation at the 2021 Virtual Society of Wetland Scientists Annual Meeting. Efforts to restore Rumney Marsh have been constrained by a belief that an abandoned highway embankment protects property from tidal flooding. Changes to the Pines River estuary following the reconstruction of three downstream bridges, reveal that the abandoned highway embank...

EPA undertook an investigation to evaluate the potential impacts on tidal flooding associated with an abandoned highway embankment constructed for the I-95 highway project. We determined that changes to the Pines River portion of the estuary occurred as a result of three bridges which were reconstructed between 2009-2012 on Route 107 which also crosses the width of the marsh. These changes reve...

Hydrological evaluation of tidal restrictions at Rumney Marsh in Saugus and Revere, Massachusetts

Located in Saugus and Revere, MA, the abandoned I-95 embankment constructed across Rumney Marsh between 1967 and 1969 formed a continuous barrier across the 3.8-kilometer wide marsh with only one opening for tidal flow and flushing to the upper Pines River marsh. All projects to restore salt marsh or intertidal habitat have had to maintain a continuous flood control berm out of the embankment f...

Dan Brielmann's third episode of "Playing Guitar, Writing Songs and What's That Song About", is about Rumney Marsh which is located just 5 miles from Boston, Massachusetts and the abandoned interstate I-95 embankment that stretches across it. Efforts to remove the abandoned highway embankment and restore the marsh have partially removed the fill, however, the altered hydrology across the marsh ...

Blue Room Interview Studio, with Ed Reiner, EPA. Restore Americas Estuaries/The Coastal Society Summit, December, 11-16, 2016, New Orleans, Louisiana. The restoration of tidally restricted salt marshes using Self-Regulating Tide Gates at Rumney Marsh in Revere, Massachusetts is discussed in the first part of the video. The second part discusses the opportunities and constraints for mitigating e...

Removal of the abandoned Interstate-95 highway embankment in Rumney Marsh is the largest remaining opportunity to restore salt marsh in Massachusetts involving clean fill removal. The 2.4- mile long embankment filled 120 acres of the marsh and affected the hydrology of marsh by creating a barrier to flow with only one opening at the relocated Pines River. While there as been some successful res...

Rumney Marsh I- 95 Embankment Salt Marsh Restoration
excellent video but it could include information about the unlined ash dump that WIN Waste continues to dump in. Its 50 feet high and the company intends to expand it for another 20 years
be careful of all the ash! that's an underperforming incinerator, oldest one in the country

My thanks to Dan Brielman for the video.
I was going to take my canoe fishing there tomorrow. Now I'm not sure.
