4 shaft conversion for a rigid heddle loom string heddle
Просмотров 20 тыс.6 лет назад
Showing my 4 shaft conversion on a rigid loom, how I use string heddles and a short explanation on how they work.
I was gonna buy another loom but this might be my answer to trying out a 4 shaft instead of actually having to buy one. Thanks!!!!
Just saw this, great idea!
Brilliant!
I would love to see the things you are creating now. I've just discovered your channel this evening and it is marvelous sir. Thank you for sharing your ingenuity
This is exactly what I needed to see tonight. Thank you so very much!
This is probably much faster as well
Darren, this is brilliant. It’s been the only way I can use my new 4 shaft loom. Thank you for the very clear instructions!!
Please how can I get this machine 🙏🙏
Thank you so much for sharing this… that’s what I’ll be doing tomorrow!
Clever solution, thanks for posting.
Excellent! I’d like to do this. At what level do you set your heddles? I notice mine are too high at this point so will need adjusting. Thanks for sharing this!
I would love to hear your views on the ashford jack loom l.
Hi. Thanks for your reply, I lost my wife last year to cancer and found it hard to carry on weaving. I’ve sold my weaving items. But you will find the loom very comfortable to work on.
Hello, Darren. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Sending you a virtual "hug" and my best wishes. Take care.
Genius idea for the heddle holder.
Thank you so much for sharing this! I'm both a rigid heddle and floor loom weaver, and while I've successfully warped using a warping board, I keep thinking that for shorter, simple warps, it would be so much easier to have a direct warping option. The biggest pushback I see to this method is that "you have to sley the reed twice," but is that really such a problem? I don't think so. Thanks again; I really think this will demystify warping for people making the leap from RH to floor looms. :)
Thank you. I’m glad my video helped you. I guess you may be able to do it without the reed. I use it to spread the warp evenly and to keep a count of my threads
How do you get a big shed to be able to use a boat shuttle please.
Jumping in this morning. Makes so much sense. Warpping boards for fine weft just doesn’t work
Thank you for this, just got a floor loom coming and always direct warp my rigid heddle and hate using a warping board..this is great.👍😉
I make a mess when using a warping board. This way makes so much more sense! Thank you!
Thank you
Love this! And the holders for sticks 💖
What a NIFTY idea, love it!!!
🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤THANK YOU!!! This helps me
just WONDERFUL, well done and thanks for sharing!
I love this! I bought a floor loom after falling in love with my rigid heddle. And there if has sat for 3 years because I couldn’t wrap my head around indirect warping and measuring the yarn. I woke up one morning thinking why not try direct warping?! What have I got to lose?! So I’m thrilled to see I’m not alone! Thanks for the video!
Thank you for your lovely comment. I’m glad you’ve got your weaving mojo back. Floor looms aren’t that scary to use, You just don’t have to over think things.
I love your weaving space. It is so warm and cozy. Especially love that you have a space for your wife to knit. I am awaiting the arrival of my Ashford Jack Loom. Any tips you have for working on this loom?
I have no tips al I can say is that you’ve made a great choice in looms. Wonderful to work on. Enjoy when it arrives
Thank you for your comment. I’ve move on to a ashford floor loom. Which I wish I’d of bought when I start weaving. The ashford Jack loom isn’t that daunting.
Какой вы молодец!!! Приятно смотреть на мужчину, который любит ремесла и занимается творчеством! С уважением Елена.👍👍👍🌹🌹🌹
Great idea with the board and hooks! I know what my next hacking project is, thanks! Direct warping is so much faster than a warping mill, mine always turns into a rat nest by the time I'm done that way...
Mine too. What I do when I’ve finished threading the reed and wind on what ever sett I’m doing I pull that amount out of the reed so that they are in groups for me to thread the heddle. I use hair clips to do that much quicker that knotting. The ones that are bent and you spring them shut.
Clever idea 👍🏻
Thank you
I am going from Rigid Heddle to Floor and honestly, this seems like the easier method, especially if doing solo. I wasn't sure how it could be done, but you've demonstrated it perfectly.
Thank you. When winding on I get my wife to hold the bar with the hooks on a pull back when I wind on but when she’s unable to help me I just attach either a bag of sugar or weights on each end then let it drag along the floor until it’s to my loom. Good luck.
I recently purchased a warping bar from @fiberlovediary for my rigid heddle loom but I was thinking it might also work for the floor loom I recently purchased secondhand. She has some videos demonstrating, but basically, there's a bottom bar with pegs. You measure the warp, then add a top bar which holds the warp in place, hold the two bars together as you wind the warp around them, keeping everything under tension as you approach the loom, and you don't need a second person.
I have the same warping bar from fiber love! And I just bought an 8 shaft Ashford table loom. I'm def going to direct warp! But, I have a question. So you wind up the warp onto the back beam and it's already threaded thru the beater, so do you take each thread from the beater and thread your heddles and then thread back thru the beater again?
Yes when I take them out of the beater bar I use hair clips to keep them in separate bunches then thread my heddles then the beater again. The hair clips I use are the ones which you just put the threads in then snap it closed it’s much quicker than knotting them
This is BRILLIANT! I CANNOT get over how fantastic this is! Thank you!
Thanks

Ureka !!!! Just what I’ve been needing!! Arthritis, tendinitis and carpal tunnel has been preventing me from making a fabric yarn project I’ve been dreaming about for years. I have a literal mountain of yummy fabric I was about to get rid of until I found this solution. Thank you for posting!!
I’m glad it as help you.
This is whst I want to do. What shuttle are you using?
It’s a Saori boat shuttle from www.thesaorished.co.uk. They hold a lot of yarn.
Darren, do you remember what diameter of dowel you used for this? Thanks. (This is amazing!)
12mm sorry for the delay
What a beautiful space! Thank you for sharing.
Angus
that is very clever, Thanks for sharing
Thank you
Wow! Darren thanks! I have the same 32" loom and the same problem and after trying about 5 different boat shuttles was beginning to lose hope. I am going to give this a go.... thanks for posting!
Hi Catharina. I hope it works for you. Good luck.
Your way is much easier than how I was planning to do it! I was going to make a new piece for the bottom of the beater bar by taking stock like you used, and route out a channel for the reed.
Uncle, how much did you pay for this loom?
Brilliant. ..absolutely brilliant!
Genius wow. Thank you for sharing 😊
Did you make the shaft holder attached to your loom?
Yes I cobbled something up.
Excellent! I hope Ashford takes heed and adds a shuttle race to their looms. Thanks for sharing.
Darren that is a fab idea! Trying it now on my Louet Kombo - I'm weaving doublecloth with a cotton warp and on the underneath picks my shuttle keeps taking a nose dive through! Hopefully this will solve the problem :)
I hope so. I think all table looms should have a shuttle race on. Let's hope one of them see my video and do it.
Let me know?
@@darrenbarlow2972 It works like a dream! The Kombo has the advantage that the breast beam is further back too, so it doesn't even mean I have less weaving space. The elastic bands mean I can adjust the height of the race (also to clear the head of the bolt that fastens the loom to its stand). I hope Ashford and Louet see this and take note :) Thanks from "sunny" Lancashire :D
Brilliant hack! Going to have to try this on my loom. Thanks for sharing
Super cosy with the dogs! And thanks good tip, I have a few 2nd hand fine yarn cones that I don't know what to do with. Gonna try plying them on my ashford kiwi!
My pleasure. I’ve got my Ashford e spinner 3 coming tomorrow (so excited 😀). My wife can have her wheel back now.
@@darrenbarlow2972 wow that's amazing! Is it because of your sore leg? I went for the dual peddle to keep leg balance :)
Partly, But the real reason is I like gadgets.
Какой прекрасный прибор! Бесподобно!
Thank you.
Is that pattern you're weaving in the video published any where? I'd love to see the draft.
Yes it in the 8 shaft pattern book (strickler patterns). When I get home from work I shall dig it out and send you a picture of the draft.
@@darrenbarlow2972 Thanks very much. I have the Strickler book. If you just give me the number, I will look it up. What did you do with the cloth?
I might be getting mixed up. When I get home I shall fine out.
Pattern 246
@@darrenbarlow2972 Thanks, Darren. Your color choices make it very attractive. As they describe in the book, it would make a nice towel.
Oh my god this is brilliant!
Sorry to be off topic but does any of you know a way to get back into an instagram account..? I was dumb forgot my login password. I appreciate any tips you can give me!
@Thatcher Kane instablaster :)
@Phoenix Fox I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im trying it out atm. I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
@Phoenix Fox It worked and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy! Thanks so much, you saved my account :D
@Thatcher Kane No problem =)
