"Aqua Dragons" are Brine Shrimp (Artemia salina, not "Salinas" as the product website states). They have been sold as "Sea Monkeys" since the last century. They have also been used as live food for fishes, prawns, and shrimp in hobby aquaria and commercial aquaculture since the early 1900s! Most populations of Artemia produce both resting and non resting oocysts. The latter hatch within the females' brood chamber and are released as free swimming nauplii. The former usually require a period of dry dormancy before they will hatch. They are gathered from the accumulations they form on the shores of salt lakes and evaporative salt producing facilities, then cleaned, and dried for storage. If vacuum packed and kept refrigerated, they remain viable for up to about 5 years, and it is these resting oocysts that are included in your "Aqua Dragons" kit as well as the "Sea Monkeys" kits. Artemia do not inhabit the ocean, and require salinities higher than that of seawater for development to adulthood, though resting oocysts readily hatch at salinities below that of seawater. They also favor pH levels higher than that of seawater. Artemia are non selective filter feeders. Their phyllopods (swimmerets) have filtering structures that catch both living algae and non living particles as they swim, and their swimming movements propel these towards the animal's mouth. You can observe this very clearly by feeding adult Artemia a suspension of baker's yeast; they filter this from the water as they swim, and the collected yeast cells form a white mass at the crustacean's mouth, then form a white area in the animal's tubular gut. Different populations of Artemia may either produce both males and females, or consist entirely of females which reproduce through parthenogenesis. Females from populations with both males and females can usually still reproduce through parthenogenesis. Males develop a wide head with short grasping pincers as they molt into adulthood, and females develop a brood chamber just past their last pair of phyllopods when they molt into adults. Males grasp females by the "tail" just past their brood chamber, and push away other males. The pair will swim in tandem this way even when they are not mating. Females usually produce initial clutches of non resting oocysts that hatch into nauplii within their mother's brood chamber, and are released. Later clutches, or those produced by females in the fall or under suboptimal conditions, are resting oocysts that the female releases into the water. Artemia take on the color of their main food source. When raised on baker's yeast, they are very pale yellowish brown. In salt lakes and salt pans, they are usually green if they are feeding on the alga Dunaliella viridis, and red or orange if they are feeding on the alga Dunaliella salina, which favors higher salilities than D. viridis. Live fishfood wholesalers routinely color their Artemia red with food colorants, because of an erroneous belief among aquarists that that red Artemia are better fishfood. Artemia nauplii are almost always orange from carotenoids stored in their oocysts by their mother. Despite their tiny size, Artemia routinely live for 6 to 9 months if well cared for. Historically they were a food source for Native Americans living in the vicinity of Mono Lake (California Sierras) and other natural salt lakes.
