Better to invest in ETFs or Stocks? Which will make you more money?
Almost 6 months after I started an investing experiment to see whether my Trading 212 stocks portfolio could beat a FTSE All-World ETF I reveal the answer, and some of you might be surprised.
For your reference I predominantly invest in ETFs and index funds as they provide a diverse portfolio at a low cost, which grows my wealth over time. I invest in both a Stocks and Shares ISA and a SIPP (Self-Invested Personal Pension).

Suggest to sell the individual shares and put the money into IITU and LGGG. Although past performance is not guaranteed, LGGG (fee 0.1%) over 5 years performed slightly better than FWRG (fee 0.15%) and significantly better than VWRP (fee 0.22%)
How did your Broadcom only go up 4.5 percent I’m guessing you must have bought it when it spiked around 18th June before dropping back to 140 And also I think it went up 20 percent on Friday Maybes after you did this video ?? I’d love a update on your Broadcom 😊
Most of my money is in S&P500 and VWRL but earlier this year I bought a few indervidual stocks Bought Broadcom cos felt its price was lagging Bought AMD cos again seemed to not be performing well Bought crowdstrike shortly after it crashed when it caused the world wide problems And recently bought super micro computer shares after it fell out of the sky for various reasons Broadcom I’m up 68 percent Crowdstrike up 25 percent Super micro computers up 26 percent AMD I’m down 20 percent ( not to worried about that as still belive its way undervalued and will make good gains in the next few years My vanguard account with S&P 500 and VWRL now sits at 48k and is up 24 percent this year

You can’t beat the market. No one can.
Rachel, please save us! Vanguard is adding a minimum £4 a month fee and the internet is in panic mode!
They are not adding 4 a month Cos many people are thick as don’t realise what fres they already paying One guy went nuts on the vanguard fb page Saying he’s now got to pay 48 a year After asking him a few questions he was already paying 34 🤣
I would select the following: iShares NASDAQ 100 UCITS ETF, Vanguard S&P 500 UCITS ETF and iShares MSCI USA Dividend UCITS ETF (IDV)
I'm sorry to hear that your stock choices haven't been performing well. Personally, I wouldn't have selected most of the stocks you've picked (for example, you do not have any MAG 7 stocks or the big US financials). If you were in the US, I would recommend SPY, QQQM, SCHD, and SCHG ETFs. You may have equivalent funds in the UK.
What are the best indices to invest 🤔
you’re doing what most do and that is giving up, i don’t like your individual stock picks so maybe more research into that area. i’d say you picked too many individual stocks in poor sectors, and you need more time to make it grow than 6 months,
Thank you for watching James. Which individual stocks are you currently invested in?
Lovely video & a stunning lady 👏👏
Thank you so much for your kind comment.
Thank you for finding the time to make a video. Look forward to the next one. Keep up the super work.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
I invested £107k about 7 months ago. I chose a handful of technology stocks with good fundamentals and cash reserves, plus a semi conductors ETF, which performed terribly, so I sold it and bought its best performing stock. I now have £211k so up 97%. In my opinion ETFs and Indexes are too diversified to make serious returns.
That’s great. Congratulations on your returns. Which stocks have performed the best for you? Do you monitor them daily? I like the IITU ETF, which has seen 44% YTD returns. I understand your point re diversity though.
@@creatingbalancefinance Started May 2024. At the moment my Portfolio is made up of PLTR 46% (up 192%) TSLA 37% (up 115%) MARA 16% (up 1%) Cash 1% Also have a £1k Call option open on SPY, which I will probably roll over. MARA has been as low as -55% and as high 25% and needs Bitcoin to move up, which may happen between now and April. Planning on selling MARA and maybe buying NVDA as they've partnered with TSLA for FSD 14. I monitor the stocks and markets every day. I sell stocks not performing. I think the market will have a Santa Rally until Trump takes over in January. Then I expect volatility, so I intend to move £100K to cash. None of this is advice. I think 44% on IITU is an excellent result
@@creatingbalancefinance Did you get my Portfolio breakdown and then delete it?
Now that Vanguard are adding £4 monthly charge I think a lot of people will look to switch. I've got my ISA, SIPP & 3 x JISA which I'll be looking to move. Currently at 10k but will be doing regular payments into each of the ISAs. Seems like Vanguard are shooting themselves in the foot.
For me, index funds stops me from impulse buying and listening to news.
Yes, I totally agree! Thanks so much for watching and for your comment too ☺️
Great video my bro!!!!👊
Appreciate it
IITU (S&P Technology Sector) is my favorite fund. 40% over the past year and I think it still has a lot of growth to come. With the AI hardware boom now out of the way, what follows will be the enterprise software side of AI growth.
Yes, it’s a personal favourite of mine too! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment.
New sub loved this content…looking forward to more episodes
Thank you so much Paul ☺️👍 I really appreciate it.
Hey, your test portfolio is missing all the big guys, the same stocks that push FWRG higher and higher: Apple, Tesla, Google, Amazon etc. Aren't you comparing apples and bananas here? FWRG is my largest position BTW, not against FTSE all-world as core position at all 😁
Thanks so much for watching and for your comment too. I tried to pick quite a random selection of worldwide stocks. If I’d included the magnificent 7 for example, I may have had comments saying there was a huge crossover as they make up such a large percentage of the all-world. It’s a tricky one. Hopefully you enjoyed the video regardless! I think you’re right though it is like comparing apples and pears or bananas! Thanks again for watching!
Really not convinced by this experiment, it all depends on which stocks you invest in, how have the magnificent 7 performed vs VWRP for instance? What about stocks that drop 20% and almost immediately recover? Sure ETFs are definitely the least risky option and the best one for most investors; I don’t think that particular experiment has proven that at all.
Thanks so much for watching and for your comment too. This was really meant to just be an experiment for entertainment purposes ☺️ the research that has been done by the experts at SPIVA shows how difficult it is to outperform an index by picking individual stocks. I could have certainly included some of the magnificent 7 but with VWRP stocks like Apple Microsoft and Nvidia making up c. 4% each of the FTSE all world I wanted to move away from them. You’re right, it completely depends on which stocks you invest in and an individuals ability to choose winning stocks.
2 months ago bought 18000 pound of Tesla worth 38000 now need some shares and some etf or index funds not all in on one shares are obviously riskier though
That's great! Congratulations on your investing success. Wishing you all the best Darran.
@@creatingbalancefinance thanks rach
I bought 10k of Tesla when it dropped to 160 around 8 months ago and sold at 240 and thought I was clever bagging 5 k profit Doh
How about investing it in IUCD ETF? It's one that has Amazon and Tesla which is not in IITU and has performed well.
Thanks so much for sharing Steve! I’ll certainly take a look!
TSLA and MSTR. All in. All you need.
Thanks so much for watching ☺️
Mstr could be very volatile
I’m doing the exact same thing, I’ve put £1000 into stocks to compare to ETFs. I am up 20% in 2 months so I think your returns are more down to your stocks selection (which look a bit random) than what you were trying to prove. Investing in individual stocks requires a lot of time to figure out which ones are better whereas ETFs don’t.
Thanks so much for watching Peter! That’s great that you’ve seen some fantastic returns in the last two months. Which stocks have been your strongest performers? Yes, the stock selections were very random! I think I mentioned this in my first video but I was very much taking this approach: www.forbes.com/sites/rickferri/2012/12/20/any-monkey-can-beat-the-market/ You’re right, picking stocks certainly does take more time and thought than just investing in ETFs. Wishing you continued success with your investments z
@ Regetti, Soundhound & DWave were the big winners. I did have a few losers though of course, it wasn’t all wins for sure.
I have 3 pies in Trading212 created about 5-6 months ago. 1 is daily s&p500 buys, that’s up around 9%, the other two are mixes of stocks and an etf, they're up 5-6% (were higher at 8% just recently).
Your s great stock picker, well done 👏 i would persevere The alworld has too many duds, in my opinion. Iitu or eqqq will probably easily outperform the alworld now that Trump is in power. 🙂
Thank you so much for your kind comment. It’s much appreciated ☺️ I’ll definitely keep investing.
@creatingbalancefinance you have a knack imo 🙂
Interesting choice of stocks you chose. Out of all your stocks, the only ones I would have picked were AXON, Broadcom and Qualcomm. Do you think you are biased and chose those stocks to prove your thesis correct? Curious to know because I am invested in shares only in my ISA and I’m up over 40% this year alone (most I know are close to 70% this year alone). My SIPP which has ETFs has returned half of that (which is incredible for ETFs). That said, for the majority of people, picking only ETFs and funds is the best approach as you can quite easily lose money picking stocks or in your case underperforming major indices.
Exactly my thought, how were these stocks even selected? Some really odd choices there. Not arguing against the thesis but that portfolio seemed designed for failure just to prove the point.
@ 💯
Thanks so much for watching and for your comment too! Maybe I need to rerun the experiment? You’re right the stock selection was very random. I did mention in my first video this point: www.forbes.com/sites/rickferri/2012/12/20/any-monkey-can-beat-the-market/ The SPIVA research shows how difficult it is to beat the market and is obviously much more in depth than this very basic and random experiment. This was purely supposed to be an entertaining illustration. Also, excellent work on the gains in your ISA. What are your best performing stocks so far?
I'm sorry but if you look at tesla and nvidia over the last decade. They've outperformed the sp500 comfortable. I'll put my money in tesla as overtime it'll bring the most gains in the market. Way more then the old school value investing in ap500 and etfs.
Thank you so much for watching and for your comment too. Wishing you all the best.
True depends which stock you buy
I prefer to hold both and will see how both goes. Great video
This is where IITU comes into it own
@@mikedearden777thank you so much Mike! 👍
Sell the stocks and put the proceeds into your SIPP for the tax relief to recoup the small amount you lost on some of the stocks. Good to see you back, I only checked in the other day to see what you were up to and was disappointed to see nothing new.
That's a fantastic idea :) It's great to be back! Thank you.
Welcome home Rachel 👍
Thank you so much Lenny!
Rachel could you do a video on stop losses and the various options in t212 and ii… especially on the larger pension funds held in etfs. If there was a large downturn in 2025….should a stop loss on etfs be turned on ? Thanks
Hypothetically let's say your stop loss gets triggered and you sell to cash, when would you get back in again. Stats show that investing on emotions leads to underperformance. You'd likely fear it going lower and miss the recovery, often the best days literally come after the worse falls. Look at the impact of missing the best 10 days and the best 30days over decades, literally leads to you making nearly no gains at all. Also be aware that after hours trading can lead to your stop loss being burned through and being rendered useless anyway
Thank you so much for watching! Of course I can put together a video on stop losses. I don’t personally use them for ETFs as I tend to hold for the long term. I did use them for this small stock portfolio though ☺️
Great to see you back….been dipping in some trading since your last video…..need to go back to ETF monthly …..Tesla and Apploving been great last 4 weeks…but only bought a few shares. Looking forward to seeing you Xmas special as promised on Christmas Day at 3pm 😉
🎄 haha! I can only imagine that might send. Fair few people to sleep after their Christmas dinner! I get very tempted to buy stocks and commodities again but I’ve definitely done better sticking with ETFs 😊 have a great evening.
Thank you so much Rachel. I loveeeeee watching your videos and have been waiting for any updates from your channel, and thank you for being so genuine and generous in sharing your investing experiences. Loving them all 🥰🥰
That’s such a lovely comment. Thank you so much Lila! It’s great to be back making videos 😊 wishing you all the very best!
So it seems you have been more successful with stockpicking than ETFs. When comparing investment funds with S&P 500, note that majority of ETF investors will not be beating S&P 500 either because they are diversified across the world which leads to underperformance.
Thank you so much for your comment and for sharing 😊👍
Great experiment and reassuring. I’d like to know what you think is the next step from here.
Thanks so much for watching. The next step in terms of what I’m investing in next?
Neither. Buy $XRP.
Interesting exercise. I'm pleased the result was that the simple approach was best.😃 I started my investing buying individual stocks but quickly burned my fingers, so it's passive index ETFs for me now, no more gambling! My default go-to fund is now VHVG, Vanguard FTSE Developed World, which is a low cost solid performer, so if it was me I'd sell the individual stocks and put my money there. Cheers!
Thank you so much for watching Steve and for your kind comment. I'm with you on selling these stocks and moving them into an ETF. Like you I started with stocks and I actually held some actively managed funds too! I'm very happy to be on the ETF and index fund road now though :) Sensible but rewarding! Wishing you continued success with your investments.
Welcome back
It’s great to be back! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video. It’s much appreciated!
Great to see you back and sharing an interesting lesson.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm back with another investing video! Sorry it's been a while! Let me know if you make it as far as Ross. As always, wishing you all the very best with your investments!
I’ve managed to save a decent amount of cash, though-over $220k. With inflation creeping up again, I’m worried about securing my retirement. I plan to retire at 55. What’s the best way to maximize these savings?
Accumulation v Income ETFs… what’s your take on one v the other?
Thank you so much for your question. Its a great one, and I actually have an older video on this. I personally choose to generally invest in accumulation ETFs if that option is available as I prefer dividends to be invested and for gains to compound over time. However, if you're looking for an income from your investments then an income generating ETF might be a better option. I hope thats helpful! As always, this isn't financial advice but I do hope you find the above helpful :) Wishing you all the best.
I am invested in INVESCO FTWG but in this video it refers to INVESCO FWRG. Both are all world etf’s but being new to investing I would like to know the difference.
Hi Steve, Thank you so much for watching and for your comment. The FTWG version is the income generating ETF so any dividends will be paid out to you. However, the FWRG version I refer to in this video is the accumulating version of this ETF which means that any dividends are reinvested. I hope that helps and i wish you all the best on your investing journey.
Would opening a HL S&S account for my kids be best, given i have for myself, rather than something like AJ Bell which seems a suitable option too?
Thank you so much for watching and for your comment too. I'd personally go with an investment platform with the lowest fees that serves your needs. I have accounts with both AJ Bell and HL and they have both been great. I hope the investing for your kids goes really well. I'm excited to have a little lump sum in my children's JISAs.
the TER is better on Invesco but the spread is usually a bit higher, is it still better?
Hi Rachel, came across your video. Well done on passing the exam. I'm interested in this course aswell. Did the course cover any tax planning solutions. Thanks
Thank you so much for watching. It was a great course and you can see the syllabus online. There wasn't a huge focus on ta planning from memory. Wishing you all the very best with whichever course you choose.
MAGS and FNGS are great ETFs for direct exposure but maybe too risky for some investors
Thank you so much for sharing :)
