I bought a property which had a freehold owned by this guy less than 15 years ago. I also worked with his brother-in-law, and some of the stories I heard are simply not repeatable. The hotel he operates from in Hove is almost derelict.

Strangely, even rats can be helpful in "clearing up an area". I lived in a rented Hove flat, many years ago. The freehold of the flats had been bought by an opportunist developer, and the leases were flawed, that there was no right of appeal from leaseholders, to any works the freeholder deemed neccessary. The freeholder was a builder. One day he knocked ay my door, demanding entrance, with a surveyor, and spend the next 20 minutes dreaming up fantastic, ever more expensive works for the property (an old, imposing, Victorian semi of 4 floors, turned into 8 flats), including underpinning, the whole building for alleged subsidence (there was none), re mortaring the brickwork, new guttering.soffits anf I expect, roof. It was supposed that the freeholder wanted eventually, in his own time, to buy every flat at a bargain basement price, ahfter having had the existing leaseholders pay for the entiure refurbishment of the outside to his taste, liking and profitibility.... and convert the house back into one unit, as he had family already living on the top floor. As it was, he had the ability to kill any sale simply by warning of the proposed upcoming works, through notices served on the leaseholders. My friend who owned the flat, desperately wanted to sell, but every time a sale was arranged, the sale "fell through" when conveyancing solicitors noted the defective lease terms. Eventually, I put them in touch with an estate agent, who had Mr VH's home number. - He purchased it, as about 50% of what would have been market rate, if the lease hadn't been "defective". As soon as the freeholder heard who had bought my friends flat, he mysrteriously "retired" to Spain, and wasn't seen again... Mr VH by reputation alone, could see of lesser crooks....

Met last year sitting in his hotel in Sussex , lives alone has a cook and cleaner , he still has his marbles about him , very reclusive , with a good business head . I would not swop his life for mine though

You don’t mention it, but Mugabe actually threw Hoogstraten in prison and left him to rot for a few years, which would have been no fun. When he was released he returned to Brighton and threw his weight around for a while, but now that Mugabe is safely dead he’s apparently returned to Zimbabwe. Four of his sons have followed him into the property game.
