5.12 And Beyond
Добавлен 3 дек 2011
What happens if an average female rock climber puts climbing first for a year? Let's find out.
I tried to onsight 5.12. This is what happened.
In this video, I go on a van trip to Ten Sleep, Wyoming, to try and onsight my first 5.12. But I get more than I bargained for - and not in a good way. Let's just say it was one eventful trip...

In this video, I get painfully close to sending my 12d slab project just before leaving for a two-week van trip to Ten Sleep, Wyoming - and my main trip goal is to onsight my first 12a. Or at least scream trying. I'm going all in on climbing in 2024 and sharing what happens along the way on this channel. I'm going all in on climbing in 2024 and sharing what happens along the way on this channel. In this video, I share the start of my recovery from a broken toe. I might not be able to rock climb, but I still can train like crazy - so long as I can deal with the (excruciating) pain. I'm going all in on climbing in 2024 and sharing what happens along the way on this channel. In this video, I get back on a rope for the first time after five straight months of bouldering (I have zero endurance). After getting insanely pumped a number of times, I manage to get myself back to 5.12. But then, just when things are looking up, disaster strikes. Subscribe to see what happens as thi...

I'm going all in on climbing in 2024 and sharing what happens along the way on this channel. In this video, I share the end of my bouldering season as it gets hot in Red Rock. I try a V8 slab in First Creek Canyon, spend a day in Moe's Valley for my sister's birthday, and try to collect a bunch of V-points with some friends. Plus, I talk about some of the things I've learned about my climbing a...

Your belayer did let go of the break strand after your fall at @3:10, that's not good pratice even when using a grigri.
I mean, it was for like one second and because he had fallen over thanks to my aggressive pulling up on the rope. I think we can forgive him!!
Good job it was your arse that hit the slab below. Why do Americans not tend to wear helmets ?
Who kindly put the rope across the stream ?
I don't know! Probably locals 🙃
Wicked onsight!
Thanks!! 😁
Congrats on getting the onsight!
Thanks!!!
I kinda agree with your homie; your shoes are too tight. People associate tight shoes with performance, which has some merit, but if they're tight to the point that you have pain or numbness during a climb? My philosophy is that sacrificing the quality of the tactile feedback from the toes is not worth the trade off. Normally, fingers don't pop unexpectedly if you're truly solid on your feet.
Yeah, that is a fair point. The issue isn't really numbness or lack of sensitivity, just pain (lol). I have experimented with bigger shoes but I just can't stand on as small footholds in them. And as somebody who loves slab, that's kind of a deal breaker 🤷♀️ Maybe I'll change my mind over time, but for now I kinda dig being able to stand on small nothings (even if it hurts!)
@@512andbeyond I used to wear really tight shoes because I love slab too (me and crimpy slabs🥰🥰). I just feel that, for me, pain competes too strongly for my limited attention. Anyway, congrats on the 5.12 onsight, of course!!🥳
Yasss isn't slab the absolute best! Always cool to talk to people who appreciate slabby goodness. Re tight shoes: I grew up doing ballet reasonably seriously, and I think my foot pain tolerance is higher than average from that 😆 Just got sooo used to it haha. But yeah generally people think I'm nuts for the tightness. And thank you!!! 🙏 I'm psyched!
@@512andbeyond Same here, except I was used to foot pain from hockey skates.😁
Haha snap! Maybe the secret to liking slab is a background in foot pain 😱
Omg Poor Ryman, “i just rolled down the hill”
Haha I know right!! And I'm so self-involved I barely notice 🙈 So funny to see what happened when I watched the vid
7:16 AHH. YUH! AHH! ... MHH! AHH! MRAAHH! Music was tense, great editing as always. Your friends in the background nonchalantly talking was also amusing. So happy for you! I heard the knock knock when you were talking about your injury and I thought it was a friend doing "knock on wood" to not jinx you for talking about non-climbing related injuries. 😂 Props to you guys returning the draws in the middle of the dark rain, that just shows you care about nature and your adventure. The risks for doing that is wild. You and your friends are Good People. Speaking of Vegas, have you met Alex Honnold? I want to meet him one day, and I know he lives here. Thanks again for a really fun and compelling video, my only ask would be in the future for you to get someone to do visual zooms and not digital zooms of your climbs. I know you're not there yet but hopefully one day! Be safe and have fun! (And feel better!)
Hahaha, I had to dig REAL deep. Thanks! I'm psyched!! I have met Alex Honnold, yep - just at the crag a few times. If you climb enough in Vegas, you're sure to run into him. Thanks for watching my vids! Glad you like them 😊 And yes, I am with you on that. Hopefully one day 🤞 But in the interim, a better camera would certainly help with the video quality. Working on it!!
@@512andbeyond The Honnold Magnus collab in Red Rock (free climb) got me hooked on these videos. I used to be a huge climber as a kid. I want to get back in to it one day. But for now I can live vicariously through people like you! Keep up the great work! And again your editing is really great, music, voice overs, all that. You're a natural at this. Good luck!
Thanks! I really appreciate that 😊😊😊 And YES that Honnold Magnus collab was sooo good. I'm pretty sure that Magnus is in Vegas right now and climbing with Honnold by the way (my friend saw them at the crag), so maybe there will be a new one coming!
@@512andbeyond OMG! THAT'S HUGE! Can't wait. And we got to get you to go viral because you are a gem! I saw some novice routes I am definitely going to do with my friend soon out in Red Rock. Just have to plan it out. (Nothing like your 5.12 of course!!)
Awesome!! Red Rock is sick. Get after it 🔥
You pronounce a$$ like an Australian... are you originally one of us convicts!?
Great job
@@lonniecarlson8866 Thanks!!
Crushing it🔥 Love to see it🐒
Thanks Nancy!! ☺️☺️☺️
Kiwi? noice
Kiwi indeed!! Good spot. Are you?
"Rest a little bit, eat something" and give it another go...Now where have I heard that before 😂. Works wonders.
Haha, it does indeed. Gotta set yourself up for the send!! 💪
I wish I could have your confidence with climbing vert and slab! You’re crushin it!
Thanks!! That's nice to hear - it definitely took a while to come! But I think once you figure out what style comes naturally, you become more confident in it.... I'm always wishing that I was more powerful and better at overhanging crimps tho 😆
@@512andbeyond You should hop on the Moonboard 2024 set. The grades are soft and the holds are comfy.😃
Hahahahaha. I will be Moonboarding up a storm this winter for realz!!
Let's go the Slimin' Ryman makes an appearance ❤
Hahaha he sure does. Double sunglasses and all 😎😎
As always an enjoyable watch, your editing is so good already. Looking forward to the 12a video and the rest of the van trip! You keep up this quality you will blow up in no time!
Thanks!! I really appreciate the positive feedback! Next video is in the making as we speak 🫡
“the worst thing about slab (no not the actual climbing)…” 😂
Hahahahaha yes I'm well aware that slab is (unfortunately) not exactly loved by all 😅
So good to see you back ❤ Greetings from Germany
Thanks for watching!! 😊
wait, that's my mum too!
Haha, woah. Does that make us, like, sisters or something?!
Is that freaky stylee 12a at the new like 1/4 the way in?
Sure is! Freaking love that route. Sooooooooo good!!
Been climbing for 7 years and I relate 100%. My extra tip for this extra year would be "If you have one goal, go for it and do it. Don't leave it for "later" cause this "later" might never come"
Absolutely!! Love that one. Definitely my favorite of all the extra tips that people have suggested 🔥
You're not comfortable on your feet and are overly reliant on your upper body.
Haha, if only that were the case. I'd say I'm the exact opposite.
@@512andbeyond No, it's true. I watched you climb a couple boulders. I'm not insulting you. It's constructive criticism. I climbed for thirty years. Lived in bishop for several of those. Good job on the videos and keep living the life.
Mom is a G
Hahahahaha yes she is 😎
Glad to see you're able to climb again
Me too!! 😊😊😊
The wind just casually stealing the crashpads is so funny 😂
Haha right!! We busy thinking we can climb and the wind is just like "nope" 😆
Keep doing your thing (from someone who dreams of 744 subscribers ha! :) Great video
Thanks!! That's the plan 😊 Heh, I'm aiming for the magic 1,000. Hopefully soon!
Did you take boron supplement?
Not a supplement, no, but I did make sure I was eating foods rich in boron 🤓
Whoop whoop my favorite youtube series just dropped 🎉
Thanks for watching Blegend!! 🙏🙏🙏
Great vid. Bishop is the best. Glad you had a good experience with the locals. Lenore is cool
Thanks!! It really is - I already can't wait to go back next season. Lenore is awesome for sure 🔥 All the locals I met there were super nice!
do you get called out for not having blue hair and no tattoos?
I have absolutely no idea what that means
@@512andbeyond Its the well known climbing hierarchy established by the degrees of how woke you are. Just how woke are you?
I don't think the last tip is really true. Sometimes you have to admit you're bad at something to push yourself to practice it more. I was bad at slab, but I practiced and I've gotten so much better! On the other hand, I'm also bad at large round holds, idk what they're called where the advice I hear is always to get as much surface area as possible on the hold. Most every time I try hard, I walk away with a super sore wrist from trying to bear down on those big holds with my entire tiny hand. Hasn't really improved even when in my head the route is straightforward, I just... can't stick the holds.
I'm currently injured, and this is a really motivating and inspiring video. Here's to coming back stronger!
Thanks!! Heck yeah 🔥🔥🔥
This has to be my favorite climbing channel. Chill, approachable, and I feel like I identify with your experience a lot more than other channels
Wow, thanks!! RUclips takes a looot of time and seems to be pretty slow in the beginning, so I really appreciate nice comments like this one. Makes me want to keep going!
Yoga could help and 🏊♀ swimming.
YAY! Come do Bloody soil once you're better and it's colder out!
I will! Or... I will try hehe 😁
Omg you didn't cut your climbing shoe 😆 I avoid synthetic supplements but I'd take boron as it funnels the nutrients to the bones. I found out how good it is for bones after dental work. Goid luck
Hehehe it was worth a shot!! Thanks, I'll check it out 🤓
I respect people who climb and I wish I could too. However, there is much I disagree with in this video. Confidence is not everything. Confidence is great when it is justified. I wonder how many climbers died from being confident. And that confidence being misplaced. It’s a very fine line between getting a relatively minor injury and a life changing or life ending one. Living on the edge is fine if that’s your thing but encouraging it as a choice, maybe not such a smart idea. While positive self talk is great, telling yourself you are what you aren’t is just delusional. Just because I tell myself I am something, even if I believe it, doesn’t make it true. People who genuinely believe they are ‘God’s chosen people’ is, in my humble opinion, a vivid current example of this. You can be what you believe you can be. Not necessarily. You might be but many, perhaps most, will not. Attempting things outside your comfort zone may be great for personal development. But thinking irrationally is not usually a great starting point. Has every climber really had more than minor injuries?

Para volar en deportiva hay calcular el vuelo según el grado de inclinación de la pared.
I broke the same toe one season. I ended up buying over sized shoes and climbing over hanging sport routes while it finished healing. Hope you have a speedy recovery.
Thanks!! Haha, that's exactly what I was hoping to do. I'm going to REI today to see if I can get it in a super big shoe 🤞🤞🤞
