Very useful video thank you. Pulled my VW Tiguan overflow tank and tried to fish out the bag. It was sort of wedged between twi internal ribs. Managed to prise it out to the middle of the tank. It was the devils own job, managed to get it about 1/4 out, but no way was it coming any further. So holding onto the part of the bag I had, then held the tank upside down and carefully sliced part of the bag open and emptied the grains into the sink, once half had emptied, easy to pull the rest of the bag out. Carefully checked the tank and rinsed it out....no silica had gotten in (it was upside down anyway, so no way any coukd have got in). Then job done. By far the hardest part was getting the bag out!

Good video, easy to understand. The replacement tank did it not have any silicate bag in it? Or perhaps a new improved for life bag? Aldo some of the posters have said that they managed to remove the old bag, but its very hard to find a video showing how thats done. Can anyone help? Thanks😀

I did mine on Octavia last weekend. I was able to fish it out carefully, using a couple of thin plastic spoons and once maneuvered into position was able to remove it using needle nose pliers. Luckily I found it to be intact but glad it is out.

Do they have an updated coolant bottle with silica in it but not in a bag??

Mine's at the dealers at the moment, £1650 . Approved used, only had it a month. I hope they don't think I'm paying for it 😟

Never heard of this until tonight. Silica gell. Like the stuff in shoe boxes keep home dry. I’m in motor trade sixteen years sell older cheaper metal. Why VW group gone down this line. What’s it’s purpose and don’t know never heard horror stories. What’s worst this oddity bag causes

The silica is there to prevent corrosion in the coolant system. However when the bag breaks, all the little silica pellets get let loose inside the system, most common is they block the heater matrix but i have read that they can make the water pump clog / fail as well

As bellow. The bag can split or crack and the silica. Gets clogged up in heater system

It certainly does. Then they replaced with similar. Same problem 2 years later. 😢

Great video. I have a Golf 7 2.0 TDI 2014 and I managed to extract the silica bag from the expansion tank without breaking it. Now I don`t know how to proceed further. it is fine to change the coolant now or in some years? It is fine to found a new silica bag? i know that the silica has the role to prevent corrosion....someone who can clarify my doubts?

Replace coolant every 5 years and you will be fine.

The vid seems long as the clip on hose at bottom of bottle was hard to get off with my cheap pliers

I had to change the heater matrix in my Skoda because of this silica. some how the bag had opened and these little Crystal balls were sucked in the heating matrix and it blocked the heating systems, had no heating. Dealer were going to charge me £1700. I replaced it my self for £80.00. If anyone has new Skoda or VW cars check for mit Silika sign on the expansion tank. It’s not possible to remove the bag because it’s hidden at the back. Replace the tank with something that has no silica.
