Very fortunate indeed that no train was approaching, or in, the tunnel at the time. Her Majesty's Inspector Of Railways recommended more and better systems to detect hot/ seized axle bearings.

That fire chief saved lives that day. Could have been a lot worse if he hadn't evacuated the tunnel when he did

I recall seeing photographs of the aftermath of this, and bogies were welded to the rails,and the tunnel walls looked like melted plastic, with the intense heat..this was a bad time for oil trains as a collision at Eccles occured on the 4th Dec,which resulted in fatailites as an express hit a tank train stood at a signal,engulfing the loco,and first coach in flames..and on Nov 13th a tanker derailed on Stockport Viaduct,spilling out 100s of tons of crude oil...

Whoever that Control Officer on the radio was at the beginning was about as sharp as broken pencil. I bet the fireground radio operator could have strangled him. I must have been the only firefighter in the brigade not to have attended that job.

Caused by a huge ice slab that had built up on tunnel wall below the ventilation shaft. Shafts have guttering inside and drainpipes to prevent water dripping down walls but it had been negleced and lots of water dripped down and froze into the huge iceslab. Previous train's drivers had reported it but of course nothing was done.

Those were the days when the firemen really were heros. No health and safety rules back then.

How that tunnel survived and remains in service to this day is testiment to it's Victorian engineering. Stumbled across the Summit Tunnel Fire whilst reading a local walking guide, thanks for sharing.

Fair dues to the train crew for going back. Into the tunnell and moving the locomotive and 3 undamaged petrol tanks. Also the tunnell was well built not to have collapsed
