    I think, at least for me, that they keep changing their sound every release of new album to the point that they, and even the fans, don’t know how to identify the band exactly. No consistency at all. I think they are trying to steer clear from being labelled as “nu metal” I also feel that the band purposely trying to be small or “indie” or whatever reason. Maybe they aren’t comfortable with fame, etc. It doesn’t help that Brandon’s voice is getting worse (let’s just be honest. It’s getting bad) and the rest of the band is trying to play around it.

    Anyone remember when she started dating Spike Jonze, and dedicated Maps to him, and the crowd at Madison Square Garden booed the holy hell out of Karen 😂🤣It’s a great song, but once everyone knows who it was originally written for, it comes off as so bizarrely insincere to both Angus and Spike, to do that deduction. Still love the band, just an oddly poor judgement call on the part of Karen.

    Huh? Nu metal fans wanted them to remain the same. So they disowned them. Then they switched bassist and fans assumed they would judge incubus by their radio songs and not listen to their albums. Most of all. Incubus decided early on they dgaf about the popular vote. The largest reason they never maintained elite status is because fans wanted to the same record over and over. If any other rock band made some of their records they would way more well received. It is a really messy fan perception issue. But they sell out arenas still with actual fans of their music. They probably have the most loyal fan base I know of as far as touring and record releases. They just got ride of all their fare weather fans. What made you make this clip? Just curious.

    I certainly wouldn't point to the Sony dispute as the catalyst for their decline in popularity. I would argue that, more than anything else, it was the natural arch that so many popular bands follow. The bands that actually make it big do eventually peak, and music fans more or less move on over time. Very few bands walk away at their peak. It's the same reason movies have sequels until the decline of popularity dictates that they stop. Now, if we're going to single out specific causes outside of the normal evolution, the most obvious would be the Dirk Lance/Ben Kenney swap (which happened at the same time as the Sony dispute). Their sound changed quite a bit after that. It started moving away from what earlier fans loved, and it didn't generate enough new fans to backfill the loss. While composition became even more technical (which I think is awesome), that's not what compels a fan to buy CDs. And honestly, I think they were probably ok with that. I always got the sense that once they got their due financially, they were content to just create art the way they wanted to. As a side note, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the other clear problem at the time. Incubus was at it's peak around the same time music piracy was peaking. We used album sales as a primary way to measure popularity back then, and people simply didn't have to buy CDs like they did before. And this was before you could easily track the number of downloads on platforms like Spotify.

      Very excellent observations. It seems like that’s how most indie bands have ended up. They got their money, got the audience and are perfectly fine just playing to them.

    Honestly being successful musicians touring the world does take its toll on people especially with time and relationships. The band disbanded because most of the main members were starting families or wanted to take a bit of a break. Theres nothing wrong with that it also lets you find your creativity again.

    Reminds me of when I sang this to my daughter's Father. We had just met and nobody ever made me feel the way he did, however after 12 years still couldn't make it work. "Pack up, but don't stray. My kinds your kind, i'll stay the same!" He is homeless now. This song was playing when I took my girl to visit her Dad. My eyes tearing up having the memory I have of us and this song. The whole album is good.

    I swear I live in the Matrix. Just discussing Incubus with Wifey and this came up. Incubus and Faith No More: Two incredibly talented bands with exceptional songwriting and musicianship that never fully fit into any one genre. Faith No More stood out by blending rock, metal, funk, and even jazz, creating a genre-defying sound that was hard to categorize. Incubus, on the other hand, blended alternative rock with elements of funk, jazz, and electronic influences, particularly in their earlier albums. As their music evolved, both bands became more experimental, which led to a decline in mainstream attention and record sales, although their dedicated fanbases remained strong. Faith No More faded after the '90s and later reunited in the 2010s, while Incubus continued but never quite reached the same commercial peaks they had in the early 2000s. Their refusal to conform to one specific genre is part of what makes them so special, but it may also explain why they're not as widely discussed today. Nevertheless, their influence and talent are undeniable and deserve more recognition. Anyways, great topic. Great band(s)!!!

    I think they were very talented. I saw them in about 1997 at a small club. I thought they sounded like Rage Against the Machine. Perhaps they try to make too many middle of the road pop songs. I think they were a good band but pretty mediocre as far as visionaries or really good songs goes, I had some girl that wanted to have sex with me one time to a really slow incubus song. I think that kind of sums it up they probably were told to do their label and they did it. They were not like a Radiohead, for instance that had a very clear distinct artistic vision. so in the end, I think they got lucky to be as popular as they were which is quite popular. They are all millionaires. What do you thin more?

    • @MainstreamIndieMusic
      @MainstreamIndieMusic 28 дней назад

      Agree! They also had lawsuits and issues with their record label. Could have played a part. But with a lot of my videos about these indie bands…a lot of them made their money off their early success, found their audience and can just play for their audience now.
