Thank you for your thoughtful post, selucea. Container ships are unlovely things, it's true. They move freight, stuff in boxes, from one port to another. But I think perhaps Saint-Exupéry might have been less interested in the freight they move, and more concerned with the crew who do the moving, with their trust and comradeship with one another and their commitment to their common task. The mail sacks moved by the Aéropostale pilot were also, in themselves, unlovely and uninspiring, but they were, as he wrote in "Wind, Sand, and Stars," "the dogma of the religion of his craft, the torch ... passed from runner to runner." The rest of the passage might be worth quoting here: "What matters though they hold but the scribblings of tradesmen and nondescript lovers? The interests which dictated them may very well not be worth the embrace of man and storm. but I know what they become once they have been entrusted to the crew, taken over, as the phrase is. If, some day, the crew are hooked by a cliff it will not have been in the interests of tradespeople that they will have died, but in obedience to orders which ennoble the sacks of mail once they are on board ship." If the same could be said of the crew of this container ship, I think Saint-Exupéry would be entirely pleased by having it as his namesake. My own regret is that though CMA CGM have another ship of this class named for Jean Mermoz, there is no ship named for Henri Guillaumet. That saddens me.

I 'd love to know what St Exupery would have thought of his name on a cargo barge. He was a poet, an aviator, a mystic, who wrote the all-ages novella, The Little Prince". The Little Prince might think he was back on the planet with the narrow-minded businessman, whose pleasure and folly was to count and recount his possessions. Amazing how far we go to accommodate materialism!
