    Hi! Thank you for such an informative video! I do have couple of questions, however: 1) What kind of research is considered a quality research? Am I limited by visual mediums only? 2) What the research should result in? Should I reach the conclusion? Should the structure of experiment be organised as of an essay? Ex. - Uniforms Should I examine the history? The result should be a model of a new uniform? Or the focus is on how I approach research? Or it is more important how I translate the research into visuals?

    Somebody told me that for fashion portfolios, we should target a famous brand (like Dior) and try to design for that brand and think you work there. Is it correct?? Or should I just design whatever I want based on the concept and moodboard ?

    • @method4fashionportfolio
      @method4fashionportfolio 5 месяцев назад

      Why assuming that 'projects' aren't how work is actually done? In this video, the projects I mention are practical exercises designed to help you develop essential skills. Securing jobs in the fashion industry is challenging, even for BA and MA graduates from prestigious schools, due to the limited number of positions available. Without the necessary skills for a designer role, getting a job-especially with high-end brands-is nearly impossible. Why would they hire someone without experience when they have hundreds of applicants with BA and MA degrees and a year or two of experience to choose from? No one has time to mentor someone who lacks basic skills and knowledge of essential processes. The industry moves too fast and is highly competitive and saturated. This is just my opinion, of course, based on my experience and observations. :)

    Hello there, the majority of the garments I've designed are based on secondary research and the only skill I currently really have is related to graphic design (I design graphics via Photoshop and draw digital flats via illustrator). I don't have much experience in fashion photography, I haven't created a mood board before, I don't have really any sewing experience and my process is mostly based on referencing an event (relative to my theoretical label) through my use of graphics and/or garment construction. I'm not sure if these skills in itself are enough. I've had an interest in creating my own label but most of my pieces are designed on relatively simple garments just due to affordability and a target demographic I have in mind. I have recently gotten into creating more complex garment flats via Illustrator, but that's about it. The commonality in format and structure I see in some of the portfolios listed on your site is nothing compared to what I've showcased in my work. My main interest is in pursuing a BA in fashion at CSM, specifically focusing on menswear as many of my favorite designers have gone there, and I highly enjoy watching and gaining inspiration from the yearly MA graduate shows. I want to develop my skills, meet new people who have a thorough understanding of their goals and objectives relating to design, reach the heights of my creative potential, and have access to the opportunities the program may have to offer. I one day would love to run my own label of high fashion essence, but I have yet to fully venture off into designing pieces of high fashion/avant-garde caliber. I like to think my ideas and concepts of design have good points of reference, and are transformative, but I am just unsure of how my work may be perceived by those reviewing portfolios at a school like CSM. My uncertainty is stemmed from the fact that my portfolio doesn't consist of some of the key components when compared to the portfolios i've seen, and that it's lacking some core elements which are to be expected. I like to design clothing from a standpoint where practicality is highly valued. I have interest in textile innovation , and finding unique ways to construct and panel clothing, as well as manipulating proportions, but I don't see myself creating very 1of1 avant-garde pieces that can be considered more of a form of art than a piece of clothing you can wear on a daily basis. Based on everything I've explained, I would like to know if CSM sounds like it could be a fit for someone like me, and if you'd like to check out my portfolio for a better visual representation, and further detailed written explanation as to what my proposed label represents. Thank you.

    • @method4fashionportfolio
      @method4fashionportfolio Год назад

      Experiments are rough developments of your ideas based on research. They can be in form of textiles, 3D samples (draping on a stand, deconstruction etc), or any other type of physical samples made from unconventional fabrics, objects by using different making techniques. They are free, quick and creative exploration of your ideas that are supposed to inspire further design development. Research would be about gathering references that should give you ideas for experiments and design developments (both for your 3D and sketchbook work). It's what you will base your project around. Your research can be any type of information (visual, tactile, conceptual) but in your sketchbook and portfolio it must be presented visually, with minimal annotations. Hope that helps! :)

      If you manage to get an MA degree in fashion, you won't have a problem in the industry, it all comes down to your work - whether you can demonstrate the required skills in your portfolio. To answer your first question: Technically you can apply for MA Fashion courses without a BA Fashion degree, BUT you portfolio needs to be on the level of a BA Fashion graduate. Do you have any experience at all in fashion design? If you can build a portfolio which will intrigue them, you have chances of getting in. :)

      @@method4fashionportfolio I am applying for a Bachelors Degree in Fashion Design. The Deadline for CSM is 25th January and for IFM Paris is on Valentines Day. Currently my main obstacle and main frustration is learning french since my target is IFM Paris, since I want to focus on haute couture. There is a program in english but I want to speak french and take the french program. Until January it seems a long time, but I think making a portfolio takes several months plus learning another language in such a short time and also preparing to move to such an expensive city if you are even admitted in the first place. My last frustration was that i wanted to visit an expo about textiles in slowenia called sonce, but it was in a very small place with no hotels nearby so I cant go. Another frustration I have is that I want to teach myself about fashion history since I will be quized about it at IFM Paris, but there is no good fashion history literature out there. there is very good literature for iconography and history of art in general, but fashion history? no. I will try to contact a fashion professor about that but idk if she will respond. Also I am currently teaching myself about technical flats in adobe illustrator. but idk if its a bad idea to include that in my portfolio. I dont know if its better just sketches alone or sketches with technical flats. I would answer any questions you have :)

The Method 4 Fashion Portfolio course is mostly aimed at people applying for Foundation and BA level courses because it focuses on fundamental design skills that are necessary for studying fashion on a high level. That doesn't mean that someone applying for an MA course wouldn't benefit from it. If you haven't had a chance to learn research and design development in a way that is taught at the top fashion schools, than there is a lot to learn from this course. Hello! How are your portfolio preparations going? Are you applying for BA or Foundation courses in fashion design? I am looking to interview people who fit this description to learn more about their challenges, frustrations, dreams and goals. This is purely for research purposes to be able to create more useful content. Please let me know if you'd be interested in a call? :) P.s. I’d be happy to answer any question you might have about portfolios! :)
