Well, I've got the saddle.
Oh man. Colnago used to make works of art in the 90's. Today's bikes may be lighter but they are ugly.
Restricting freedom of what can be done on a bike restricts creativity.

A good indicator of the difference between world tour riders and the UK's best domestic hill climbers is the Monsal Head hill climb organised each year by Sheffrec CC. The course record of 1 minute 14 seconds was set back in 1981 (!!) by Malcolm Elliot, a British world tour sprinter (or whatever the equivalent was back then for the top tier of continental racing). Being such a short climb, it favours absolute rather than relative power, and Malcolm would certainly not be considered a climber. Same for Chris Boardman, definitely not a 'climber' in the pro peloton, but still as you note a National Hill Climb Champion. Harry Mac, Andrew Feather, Tom Bell, Ed Laverack (all National Hill Climb champions) et al are all phenomenal athletes, but I think they'd be the first to admit that they'd be no match for today's world tour galacticos like Pogacar and Vingegaard on any climb.
SP seem to have had 'issues' & 'disagreements' with several kit & equipment suppliers over the years. I wonder why it was only them & not other teams.
closed roavd racing anyone ? apart from a ever diminishing number of crits, why is there no safe closed road events, no closed rolling road block sportives? opprortunites to watch limited no spectators = no sponsers, BC needs to engage with venues such as race tracks, race courses and others and open up racing.
Tom Pidcock needs to leave Ineos ... Ineos is a sinking ship.
He's gone - moving on...
Gone I hope 🤣🤣🤣
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Well we only have to look at what happened to Sir Brad and his passion to put something back into cycling and youth development. Maybe do what the Premier league football teams have done and get the other Emirate regions to sponsor? It’s worked for UAE….
They already own half the western world. Do you really believe that is a good move?
Pros should be helping/paying back these smaller devo teams. If it wasn't for these teams a lot of pro riders would not get to where they are.
They'll likely be a quasi Specialized Factory XC devo team. And have already provided Blevins & Batten to them. Blevins actually won an Elite World title for Trinity in 2021, the XCC title - and then a XCO World Cup in Snowshoe.
This feels about right. One of the questions coming out of INEOS Grenadiers' dev team announcement was why not Trinity - a deal with Specialized could be the reason.
Saint Piran now too!😐
Yup, it's such a shame!
@@monument_hq f%$&ING devastated. Ricci won the 1st TT I ever rode. His dad helped organize every cycling event in C'wall for decades. 45years later ,back home from years away, they supported every person who rode or wished to ride a bike in !the Duchy. If true cyclists can be pushed out of the sport by the social media rumor mill, how can road cycling survive?
British Cycling need a department of organisation efficiency 🙄
I’m sure Elon Musk is available to head that agency
In my opinion, and I'm likely to get flamed for it is that BC need to call it a day & start again, but properly. Instead of all the money going into the national squad & the elite scene maybe it should instead go back to developing & supporting the grass roots scene. No rider instantly becomes a 1st cat or elite cat racer, you start from the bottom & work your way up. I raced from the late 80's to the mid 00's & for some of those years did so as a 1st cat (for many years there was only 1st, 2nd & 3rd category - no elite or 4th cat) and for many years I could race every weekend from the end of Feb to Oct, sometimes 2 or 3 days a week during the summer when you factored in evening criterium racing. Where I'm going with this is that there was a definite pathway available even back then to riders to climb the scale & get noticed if they had the talent & ambition to perform at a pro level. That pathway just doesn't seem to exist anymore & the road scene has been on the bones of it's arse for many many years - but BC have turned a deaf ear & a blind eye to this & they've been the principle reason for its decline. Glad I did it when I did it though.
Surely it's Charlie Aldridge.......
82 saroni
I knew a uk pro that was 63kg and could put out 518 for 5 mins; 840 for 1 minute; 425 for 20 minutes. He’d easily have been able to do 600+ watts for 3 minutes, at 63kg. He didn’t get any higher than 6th GC in Langkawi and about 40th in Brabantse Pijl. People like Pogacar are utterly insane. As you implied, NO CHANCE!
Tom Mein> cam mason
Not based on results in Europe he’s not 🤷♂️
Cam mason clear
And a great road season in Italy with Project 1, 4 podiums in a row? He’s wasting time winning Nat Trophies in the UK.
In the past, that's certainly been the case, but this year has been really close - it'll be great to see them go head-to-head at the nationals!
Where is the money from Lloyd’s Bank going from Tour of Britain? Surely, it should be going into these grassroots races.
I would love to see Marc Cavendish in a hilllclimb. He is superstrong but carrys more heavy muscles than those who are climboptimized. He is able to put out extreme power after beeing a lot exhausted.
His numbers have always been poor. I think his main strength is probably recovery from efforts.
@@StopTheRot That and technique (and of course power and fastness), he looks like the best at aeroposition when sprinting standing, which dont help the most in climbs.
Very misleading thumbnail. ALBA aren’t a pro team. Unless you’re earning a living you’re not pro and no Conti teams are
You are right that for men the pathway to pro is now via European racing rather than domestic scene. Bravo to Cycling Sheffield - small team but took riders to several stage races in Europe - they showed themselves well & it paid dividends x 4 👍
Gents, I'd have to respectfully disagree with what you are saying - the women's Junior scene just doesn't exist in the UK, so the Junior girls step up from Youth (max 1hr races) to the Women's Elite road series (can you imagine many boys jump up to racing Lincoln GP at 16?). You have some absolute phenoms doing their thing, Cat, Imi, Lucy, Elidh ... but it's very much sink or swim for the GB&I juniors women, can they hack the jump from 1hr races to 3hr races - you are 100% reliant on the Junior teams like Shibden and Toufauti racing nations cup races (abroad) for the girls to get them the incremental developments that they need - If they are lucky they will get a second bite of the cherry with someone like Alba in the UK if haven't made a European U23 Devo team.
That's fair. I think both Harry and I are happier with the teams on offer rather than the races (between youth and elite), where there's definitely more to be desired! The strength of teams is a really positive development in recent years, but my time on the Road Commission showed how tough it is to fill the gaps in development opportunities for junior women with those races that bridge the gap between circuit and road racing. To be honest, it would probably take a whole episode to unpack the junior women's scene, so that may be something we talk about in a future episode! I've got a few guests in mind who could speak more knowledgeably on it than me as well 😆 ^Owen
Absolutely agree with the step up comment. Women’s cycling in general has come a long way in recent years with a lot of really talented riders. Having an U23 level would improve things further.
@@martinashwell Having more than 2 dedicated Junior women's races in the UK would be something...
Was a super short course though! Feather or Ed need longer course. Harry still brilliant though well deserved win
True! Harry definitely has that short duration power that comes through on the crit scene as well.
Are you guys serious ?? LOOOL !!!!!!
why only 4 comments
Your guess is as good as mine! 😅
Great sport but more needs to be done, need more coverage like this 👍🏾
Pog can do this at the end of a 250km race 😅
Pogacar did 7w/kg for 40 minutes on Plateau de Beille in the third week of the tour. I think you would be stunned how easy he would beat the other guy.
Is this a joke😂. Harry Mas.😂
World tour guys would cook them. MvDP did 560w for almost 6 min. Safe to say he could hit 100w more for 2 min
Great content guys 😊....u've earned a new supporter😊.... cheers from Piran(Slovenia)👏🙏🐐🌈👍✌️👽🔥💪🇸🇮🇬🇧
Thanks very much for watching! 🙏
I dunno lads, I'd say at world tour level there'd be 70kg guys that'd annihilate that guy!?
Yeah, there would be a fair few riders who would beat Harry, but there are a surprising number who wouldn't. People seem to think that being in the WorldTour instantly makes a rider better at every single aspect of riding, but that's not really the case - hence where this fun little conversation came from. ^Owen
@monument_hq absolutely. What would be interesting is to give both the same goal for 6weeks. Which is a fresh short uphill TT. Be interesting to see how many he'd beat then. The world tour lads would have to eat Harry's diet though. Let's keep this fair!!
@@colmsheahan6991 I love the sound of this! Though I fear Harry's diet is his secret weapon 😆😆
Harry Mac the goat 🎉
100% 👑
A good comparison maybe with Ed Laverack who does more longer climbs. On Sa Colabra 10.27km Tom Pidcock has KOM 25:32 with Ed at 26:45 (very similar power). But Illi Gardner is the QOM at 31:09 - on published Strava so there could be a number that are not public. Ed has said that he is not doing the Hill Climb Champs in 2025, but he did win it in 2019? - maybe he is the only other person to have beaten Andrew Feather in recent years?
Good memory… CB “As a senior he won four consecutive hill climb championships (from 1988 to 1991)”
Comparisons aside (pros vrs amateurs), the day out on Hill Climbing Champioships watching and cheering on the competitors and heck even giving it a go is one of the best experiences if you love cycling.
The subject is wasted conversation......and to ask it means these guys just don't realize how good Pogocar is, its another level lads....
We made it pretty clear that Pogacar would smoke anyone up any length of climb in the UK
So you need to change the title of the link...@@FullBeansCyclingCompany
Harry Mac to World Tour, Here We Go??
Don't get me wrong, the top hill climb riders are super strong, but there are many world tour riders who would beat them easily. For example, Victor Campenaerts does 2 min intervals at 670w (almost 10 w/kg) in training. Everything that is longer than 1 or maybe 2 minutes is extremely strongly correlated with FTP.
"Easily"...doubtful. What separates World Tour is they can do around 600 watts for 3 minutes at the end of a 100+ mile race/stage. Just because they can do that doesn't mean they can do much more fresh.
@derekvanhoose6815 I don't disagree. Our disagreement probably only stems from my use of "easily". With that I just mean that for many world tour riders this would not be a PR effort, but for sure such an effort hurts like hell, even for Pogi.
Does he really do intervals at that high a power output?
@@joeskipper91 Yeah, he talked about them in a video on his channel. 3x 2min: 1st @ 670w, 2nd @ 630w, 3rd @ 600w (he was about 68kg that time normally.)(ruclips.net/video/NYvrxt6xXLw/видео.html&ab_channel=VictorCampenaerts)
Joe! Thanks for tuning in. I used to race against you way back at Hog Hill - it's great to see you absolutely smashing the triathlon scene nowadays 🙌 ^Owen
Nice podcast I didn't know about. However, let's not compare hill climbers to those dopers at the world tour lol
Thanks for the kind words 🙏 I think we definitely prefer the authenticity of the hill climbing scene!
@@monument_hqquick tip. You want to get the American watch you should touch on gravel also
My money is on Harry Mac 💰💸
🤣🤣
I really hope she'll fit well into the Movistar team👍
I personally don't blame SP at all if they choose to buy bikes from else where, cycling is expensive. The UCI are just as bad and set no example to follow by unfortunately. As long as the bikes are above 6.8KG in weight which is the UCI race limit, then No Problems here im all for cheaper cycling, and getting younger talent into the sport. Not everyone can afford a 15k uci legal race bike.
Come on. Are we really going to get upset over fake UCI stickers? Many pro cycling governing boards allow women with penises to compete against women without penises. Seems like we need to step back and fix more than the stickers.
Are we? Yes. Regulation is there and agreed to when you set up a team, everyone else has to abide by the same rules. There’s plenty to criticise the UCI over but this isn’t one. The transphobia isn’t needed or wanted, thanks.
@@FullBeansCyclingCompany transphobia my butt. Agree UCI correct for this. It’s sarcasm friend. Didn’t mean to hit a nerve. Men participating in women’s sports is also an important issue. Not transphobic at all.
You are telling me those chicken legs can push a 62T, are you a terminator?
