Welcome to my RUclips channel! I hope you will join me in my adventure of being a commercial drone pilot. I hope to educate, inform, and maybe entertain you all with my experiences piloting the latest drone tech.
I previously served in the Army as a Military Police Officer, and ran a contract security agency for over 27 years, specializing in narcotics/explosives interdiction. Most of that experience was in the aviation sector! I have some flight time under my belt in single engine land, and gliders, and was always interested in drones. So like and subscribe to follow along on this adventure of mine.

How fast do you usually fly for ADS? It would be my first personal drone. I fly M3E RTK for my day job but want a personal rtk drone hopefully to learn more and start my own side gigs. Autel is within my price range and would like to know if rolling shutter is really that bad? M3E RTK would be nice but definitely next level status one day!!
I have flown quite a few missions with the EVO, the rolling shutter is easy to overcome…keep flight speed low, shutter speed as high as possible, also use manual focus set to infinity.
@spartanaerialservices thank you so much!!! I just had a bad purchase experience and now the dealer is willing to compensate with a deal for a replacement. They accidentally sent a used drone and now is willing to give me the brand new drone for $2599 plus one extra battery for a total of 4 batteries!! I threatened to cancel so I took the upperhand on this one!!
@@rudygamboa8222 whattt?! I think I saw you post that on FB group. Unreal!
@spartanaerialservices would you take that deal? Yes sir I posted it. That's where I found you! Ha!
Honestly if you purchased a drone new, and they sent you a used drone…they should send you a new drone free, and have you ship the used one back.
How do you get those thermal jobs? I can’t get one to save my life.
Start to indroduce yourself to property management companies, building leasing companies, or commercial roofers.
How did you set up the monitor? I need a video on that please
Been a long time sub. Let me say thank you for inspiring me to start posting on RUclips too!
Very informative video, more helpful than DJI lol
Thank you!
Sooo, the drone can still do surveying/ 3D mapping without the ground receiver?
@@duanespeck2316 it can.
Thank you for your video! I am new to the drone industry and bought the Magic 3E for construction inspections and testing next week for my 107 Pilots License. I love your monitor set up and used your shopping list to get that going. How did you mount the T-Bolt attachment to the case? Can you tell me what hotspot you are using for connectivity, I have found WIFI an issue when setting up and some locations. The power supply you listed is not available, so I am getting something similar. How long does that type of power source last with the View Sonic? Thanks for the great info!!
@@LindaKedileeRohr thank you! I just drilled a hole through the case for the T bolt, and used some sealant. Usually the power supply lasts me around 4 hours. I am using the Netgear Nighthawk M1. Thanks for the support!
Нифига се большой
At first it looked like a huge drone, but it got smaller and smaller as it came further down 😊
hey-Spartan~ you uploaded best drone~sleep well, ;)
What camera / lens are you using for this mission? X7 with 24mm lens?
@@2002Fina actually I was using the X4S mechanical shutter!
Ouaaahh ❤
Great video !!! question would you recommend getting a “ hotspot” like mentioned in your video for “all” commercial pilots or more depending upon what type of mission pilot is flying? Reason i ask is because am new pilot and i am currently just using my cellular hotspot
You can certainly use your cell hotspot to start out, but once you get busy, a dedicated hotspot would be best.
I know it’s not as large…. But, the FeelWorld LUT11h is VERY bright. 2200nits. (11” diagonal display) HDMI and/or SDI “looped” input and around $300. I have one but haven’t tried the “function” settings yet. Supposedly, you can assign specific brightness/backlight settings to a function button. There is a company that produces all sorts of custom cut and labeled (looks way better than my P-Touch work LOL) escutcheon plates for a few separate pelican and Nanuk cases. You use their web based app to layout the holes and everything you want . They charge a slightly pricey (for our vol fire dept budget under BIDENomics) fee for the work, but they are gorgeous. (around $75 for a plate with 4 HDMI ports / 2 RJ45 / DC power 5.5x2.1 barrel / DC Power out 5.5x2.1 barrel / Power in Anderson 45a powerpole / and a few other items. I’ll post a link and some pics of the one we built in-house. Thanks !
Another fun one... Ive been doing a bunch of these lately along with solar..
Two of my favorite types of jobs to do!
Fun video.... Good job!
Thank you !
Nice
Thanks
Your video and also Dronelink are great. But you can side load Dronelink directly to the smart controller - without needing an IOS tablet - no?
I believe you can do that yes
Truth!
What reflective tape do you use?
3M reflective, great stuff!
What’s to inspect
14 Mw solar field.
You obviously take drone safety seriously. Interestingly I just viewed this video a day or so ago, when I had seen another video in which drone incident reporting was brought up as part of drone safety day. NASA administers a program which takes anonymised safety reports for the aviation industry, including UAVs. Contributions are welcomed at asrs.arc.nasa.gov - this database is dedicated to improving safety in the industry. This is the sort of incident they are interested in collecting information on.
Thanks Fred for this video. I’m going to check out BWI. -Rick
Right on!
I'm interrested
Nice and informative. Do you have any videos that explain what you do AFTER the flight mission? How do you process the photos? What is the actual deliverable? Can you show what the customer would receive. Understand the mechanical vs. the rolling/electronic shutter - would the Drone Deploy software take that in to account if you did the same misson with the Mavic 3T? Thanks! Stay safe. I'm am now a sub!
Great video. What is the stars GSD for a job like this?
Always learn something from your videos. Thanks
Thank you!
@spartanaerialservices what is the highest speed you've flown w rtk?
@rudygamboa8222 generally I keep It at 22.5 mph.
@@spartanaerialservices with the autel rtk?
@spartanaerialservices thank you for the reply btw!!! I also messaged you on another video w rtk on the solar panel flight!! Great videos and subscribed to your YT Page!!
Thank you for this. Quick question, during this setup process, does your DJi controller also need to have internet connectivity (via hotspot, wifi, etc.)? Or is the authentication done only via a connection to the NTRIP network?
Yep, needs internet.
Is it better to take thermal at night or during the day for room inspections. I will research how to get certified in thermal for sure. I do have my 107 license and retired first responder out of Florida. With my connections from being a former first responder and the recent ban of dji drones in Florida for first responders to utilize them, I will be filling this void with my 107 license with the departments approval as long as i do not interfere with their operations. Over the course of this month, i have customized a light weight thermal camera being attached to my drone yet i did not realize a certification was needed. Most of my thermal would be for search and rescue operations this hurricane season anyhow. Yet i am still interested in the certification of it.
Roof thermals are usually done at night. Solar panels are done during the day. It’s a mess not being able to use DJI in FL, for your use, maybe a Anafi Thermal…awesome bird for the price.
@@spartanaerialservices Greetings from Germany ... The Anafi Thermal is kinda a nightmare regarding software . Anafi stopped supporting the platform many years ago and you have to side load old versions of Freeflight
what type of locetite did you use?
Loctite blue. Thanks for watching!
Hi I have a question, please drtk files are divided, not a single file During a two hour flight mission I get not one but two rtcm files
Hey Fred, have you used drone deploy yet? If so, how would,d you compare it to drone link
I have used both. Drone Deploy is good (not great) and it does processing. Dronelink has more capability, but lacks processing (unless I am wrong, been a while since I used it!) Really depends on your client needs / use case.
What about other states. What's the best free or paid rtk to use
Well the only free RTK ones I know of and have personally used is the NY one and the CT one.
Nice nametag nerd 🤓
so the "hack" is essentially just to use the DJI app???
Well yes, it’s a hack because Drone Deploy will still stitch it together even though it wasnt flown in DD (which at the time of this old video DD took 27 images to stitch, Pilot 2 only takes 26 images), however, since the release of this video, DD now has the pano set up to work with the M3E while flying in DD. Thanks!
Fred. Thanks for the video. Good job. I recently purchased the M3E. Dig it! However, I recently flew a DroneDeploy ortho using my M3E. The coverage was really bad - missed images everywhere. I had the latest firmware AND latest DD app version too. Have you experienced missing images in your orthos?
I usually fly all of my ortho in Pilot 2 and then I process in Drone deploy, I really never used Drone deploy to directly control my drone for any mapping or aerial data sets, unfortunately, I do find Drone deployed to be very inaccurate while controlling my drone. I would much rather use the native application For that. I find a pilot too to work so much more seamlessly and it is so much more accurate.
@@spartanaerialservices Thanks for your reply Fred. Yeah, I'm leaning more toward Pilot 2/Flight Route as well instead of DroneDeploy. However, In THIS video you used DroneDeploy (1:05) for the automated mapping. I was wondering how THIS flight and mapping with DroneDeploy turned out? Missed images? Did you get everything?
My apologies, was thinking about the wrong video. This particular mission looking back through the data, the individual photos/data points were accurate. The client that i fly for has a very rigorious quality control process for data, so it would have been kicked back if there was an issue, and i quality control check everything myself. That being said, the issues that you have seen, I have had happen to me when flying DD during a thermal mission. The other issue i tend to see with DD is the return to home is highly inaccurate, and will land as far as 30ft away from the initial takeoff point. I would be happy to discuss further, feel free to shoot me an email @info@spartanairsvcs.com.
@@spartanaerialservices I certainly will Fred. Thank you!!!
Great video Fred. Have you been making these yet? I'm currently looking to either purchase or make my own. Any information would be appreciated.
I’m definitely going to do a follow up video to this unfortunately there wasn’t a lot of demand for these units so I haven’t bothered making any more than the first batch of 10 that I sold but in the video information, the links to buy all of the materials to build your own are there.
Florida DOT gives florida free NTRIP, its so convenient!
I will def sign up for that too! Connecticut has free NTRIP as well.
What’s better this or the Mavic 3E? From your experience not the specs
In my experience, the three enterprise is a much more efficient machine. I’m lucky enough to have both, so I use the Evo for my back up in case I have to send the DJI unit out for maintenance but if you were to be able to purchase one and you purchased the Evo, you’ll be just fine, you just have to fly the missions a bit slower is all.
…I think the locking is an option on one of the packages/options on the taco.
Tacoma 4x4 will go anywhere with adequate tires. I’ve rolled through 3ft of snow with solid tires. ….now I need to find out what the rav4 awd will do with similar tires.
I’m up to 90,000 miles on my third GEN Tacoma, just outside today replacing the front brakes which is a breeze. I definitely do love this truck like you said I’ve actually never gotten myself stuck anywhere but I do keep some traction boards bolted in the bed just in case lol.
Love the way you work, very professional 👍🏽
Thank you!
So for jobs like this you don't need the rtk attachment I see. Saves a lot of time
Yep, this is just a weekly progression mission, used by the GC to gauge progress of construction.
Great info
Glad it was helpful!
Do you not need a RTK module?
Only if I am flying an RTK mission. This was just a progression mission.
👍
Does the Toyota have a locking rear diff?
not yet! Im going to do some upgrades next month, Suspension, winch, etc. Right now i just keep two sets of traction boards with me.
What is your estimate for a life expectancy in hours for the M300/350 class of drones (M30's as well). Aside from batteries, remove weather etc. For purpose of the question, assume flying in a climate controlled clean warehouse, how many hours would you expect to get out of a M30, M300 or M350 platform? 2k-3k hours? (with motor changes and maintenance of course). Great video, thanks for posting it.
I have seen postings from DJI about motor tests being over 2K hours with no issue, but for my company, I will change all after 1200 hours.
Thank you, that is a lot of help. I'm attempting to put a cost per hour of flight time, batteries etc are easy, but there was no data (nor would DJI really give any) on platform lifespan. I think I'm going to use 2K hours of operation on the non-consumable platform. Thanks again. @@spartanaerialservices
@digitalQ33 of course! DJI needs to be more forthcoming with information like that. I got my data from a former drone tech.
I just got certified with the ITC. I don’t know yet which applications I’ll be specializing in, so which beginner thermal drone should I get? I wanted to ask an expert since the internet has so many different opinions.
Honestly...for the money, the M3T! Congrats on the certification!!
Where did you do your thermal certification/training? Thanks!
Best place to go currently is ITC.
Where in nj was this? I have a drone biz I’m trying to get under way and would like to tag along on some of your jobs to learn and network
