Kayak Fly Fishing - Food for the Soul
Alot of happy faces 😊
@@markc5764 lots of great memories! 🎣
Ammmmmm
Nice simple fly. I don't think I have seen anyone wind thread in the direction you use though.
@@richardwhite9682 not the first time I’ve heard that lol I actually use either direction depending on the materials and technique I’m using.
I find sticking to fewer patterns saves more money. Every new material you get delays breaking even by a few months or years. 😂
@@DanieHattingh True! But this can help you have a little more creative freedom without limiting yourself.
As an instructor, you can get better results with fewer steps by installing the zonker inverted. Simply pierce it on the point into a near horizontal position. Hook rides up, and your flash is much more visible. Harden the zonker about 3/8" behind the hook to help prevent fouling. Tight lines...Paul
@@paulandsallyh5824 thanks Paul! I’ll give that a shot. 👍
Awesome leads! My biggest expense as a Tier are quality hooks. Any advice there? I usually end up buying through a local shop as the prices aren’t much different than big box or online retailers
@@jtwhicker thanks! I have that same issue on and off. But, if you can find wholesale dealers (there are few and far between) you can score some really awesome deals! Most recently I’ve been buying hooks from Jstockard, they occasionally have an option to purchase bulk on specific items (like hooks) and it can definitely turn out cheaper than local fly shops. As a fly tier who sells my designs, materials definitely have their seasons where prices go up and keeping stock is hard to do. But keep an eye on multiple suppliers and you’ll be able to find the best deals 👍
Got a lot of birds from hunters at a very low price. (like a coke and/or a cake!)
how do you get it to sink.
@@jamesjohnson4446 ruclips.net/video/2bF2fY3Q9zc/видео.htmlsi=o2Cnpv7YNaUbIjQX
@@jamesjohnson4446 4:27 I show you exactly how I do that 😎👍🎣
Yeah, Bud, FireHole didn’t design that hook. It was made by a company in UT who sold the design/production to Fulling Mill, and FH ripped it off- poorly, I might add.
Interesting. Well it’s a great hook design!
I'm blessed to have more deer hair color's than any one I know.as a deer hunter of 43 years experience and a fisherman for longer time I would take 5_ 7 patches and die them and have 5_ 7 color tones. I've developed around 100 color recipes so you can have 500_ 700 different colors . I'm probably down to 350 colors from 500+colors. I useRIT cloth die and measurements are exact. I've stated several times on internet that I would gladly share for free the recipes but no one ever took up my offer . it's a big money saver and I opened a package of hair th outher day and noticed a medium blue had a little fading after 10 - 15 years .Papa wishing you well. 😊
That’s awesome! I love tying up some deer hair bugs. I’ve tried to ask a few hunter friends for hide and feathers from their kill but I have yet to receive anything. If you don’t hunt or have close friends who hunt it can be difficult to get yourself enough material to be worth working with. Tight lines! 🎣
It's not about saving money. The best fly fishers are all tyers.
Subbed as soon as I saw you fly fishing out of a kayak. Looking forward to tying Smallmouth flies. Thanks in advance.
That’s awesome! Thank you 👍 more smallmouth bug fly tying coming soon.
The dumbell eye placement is very clever. Keeping the claws apart is always my biggest struggle on craw patterns
Thank you! Yeah it helps keep them separated I the water. Makes for an awesome lifelike action 🎣
When I'm doing a Fly Fishing merit badge class for the scouts, or for those Summer Camps who may go through 250 kids during a summer merit badge program... this is a GREAT way to save money on fly tying materials... Thank you.
Oh that’s so great! I’m glad you found the video 👍 these will definitely be great for that kind of thing 😁 thanks for watching!
Nice tips! Keep em coming!
Will do! Thanks for watching 🤙🏽
Thanks that helps a lot. My vise is sitting in the post office for me to pick it up. For a beginner with atm no equipment this helps alot and opens my mind. Now i have to find similar shops in my country. I am so excited just started flyfishing (after 40 years of "conventional" fishing) 3 weeks ago. I was sure i am to layzy to tie my own flies but after 2 weeks i knew i have to because after i come home from flyfishing i always have ideas what i have to try. My number one i want to try is the Clouser Crayfish. Maybe anyone knows an alternativ for Furry Foam?
That’s so awesome! Welcome to a wonderful new hobby. There’s nothing like catching fish on your own flies 🎣 I’ll be posting more videos like this 👍 I’m glad it helped!
More than anything else, getting into fly tying will expose you to a whole new world and learning curve you never expected. You will start to have new curiosities and answers to questions you never thought of previously. It is a priceless experience, worth every penny. Plus, just a bit of practice and you can have the exact fly you know you want and need, just like that! I got started because I couldn't find or buy a particular streamer pattern that was working for me. It was a no-brainer to just tie it myself. Ten years later and I've never looked back!
Beautiful! Yes 100% agree! Just like the art of fly fishing, fly tying is very therapeutic. Thanks for watching! 😎🤙🏽
@@SpiritFlyExpeditions , thanks for posting! Love the good vibes. Cheers.
I can relate so much. I want to start for exact the same reason.
@@ForstHeld you won’t regret it!
Does it catch a lot of crappie?
We don’t have too many opportunities for crappie here in NM but I’d imagine they would love it! Bass love it, carp love it, trout love it, even musky dig it lol Try it on some crappie and let me know! 😎🎣
Man that's a quality Pike!! Haven't seen many pulled out down there of that size in a while. Congrats!!
Thank you! Yeah I was pretty pumped to finally get to see a beast like this one. It wasn’t easy but that’s what makes the challenge more appealing 😎🤙🏽
That fishing kayak setup is 🔥I love how everything is placed with purpose. Also the footage is crispy🤌
Thank you! This kayak seemed like it was made for fly fishing. Thanks for watching 😎🤙🏽
Well, I think I know what I'm doing this weekend lol!
Tis the season to go get some Toads! 🐸
hey man lots of Smallies, that carp u caught probably felt like a 20 pounder keep up the good content.
Thanks johnie! Yeah I was blown away by how hard she fought! I’ll be targeting them more often for sure 🤙🏽🎣
if you cannot catch any fish, fly fishing, why not carry a spinning rod with spinners or just some powerbasit or fireballs and maybe then u can catch some fish.
Live worms are the absolute best if you really want to catch some fish 🎣 but we Fly Fish for so much more than catching fish my friend 😊
@@SpiritFlyExpeditions i tie flies also, and i make spinners trout to musky size, but was also a bass fisherman i also tie flies, and make spinners, trout size thru musky bucktails
@@johnieduran7872 very cool! I love bass on the fly. We’re just hitting the bass season here in New Mexico so you’ll be seeing some bass videos on the channel more often 😎🎣
@@SpiritFlyExpeditions cool will be looking forward to the videos
Those are some BEAUTIFUL fish dude!
Thanks man! They are pretty awesome to experience.
Awesome vid and always glad to know how my patterns do in various situations! Cheers to you and pops!
Thanks man! Let me know when you want to get some bass on the fly. I’d love to get out there with you 😎🎣
Love that lake! Caught some toads out of there on regular tackle. Taking the fly rod out there this year! Good to see some patterns that work!
It’s an awesome lake! We just found out about it last year. If you go in the summer definitely bring some topwater bugs! 😁🎣
@@SpiritFlyExpeditions yup had a epic day last year on top water popper middle of the day!
Cool video, good information and techniques 😎
Glad you liked it! 👍
That’s a game changer tip. Great idea 🔥
Thanks man! Love those craft fur streamers 😁🤙🏽
This has nothing to do with the video, which is great btw, has anyone ever told you that you look like Elvis?
LOL when I worked at a hotel I heard that quite a few times. I guess I can see it 😂
Hobby lobby or HomeGoods are great places to find cheap materials, just have to be inventive. Thanks for the tie. Happy fishing.
Yup! That’s exactly where I found this lol thanks for watching Nick 😁👍🎣
I like the way you think. There are beeswax pink sticks at the bead stores that pickup bead and help with the install .
Nick, this is a great all around d streamer tie, thank you for the detailed instructions.
Absolutely! Thank you for watching Mike 😁👍
This is so true. My doctor told me to keep fishing and tying flies, and when I stop doing that, then you know something is truly wrong. It's therapy to me every time I do either. I use my imagination to release and design flies. A slow day of fishing is still a day on the river, cherishing every moment.
I love that! Keep tying, keep fishing, keep getting out there and enjoy every second. 😁🎣
Fi All fishing...especially fly fishing is my psychiatrist! Commune with the turtles n frogs...water birds and wind in the trees.
Same here my friend! I love going out when the trout are spawning and getting to see the big females and males in the shallows flashing their beautiful colors while in their ritual.
It's a lesson most ignore , It's a passion some adore . I get your explanation totally , If for a minute you get that " ESCAPE " ....... The rest doesnt matter for mere minutes .
100%! Thank you for watching John 👍😁
Most people I meet on the river are not taking the time spent for granted. And it’s awesome to see
Definitely! I love having a good conversation with good people on the water. Just another thing to enjoy about being out there 😁🎣
You should definitely quit ... talking about fishing.
I should……..and just GO FISHING
Maybe you suck? Find a good mentor.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly man you hit the nail on the head. I belong to a group called Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing. It’s a program designed to help wounded Veterans heal through fly fishing. Fly Fishing is my outlet to just go and be alone with my thoughts and reflect.
Also what type of hat is that, it’s awesome man.
That’s so awesome. I’ll be donating some time this year to a group that helps teach veterans to Fly Fish. Keep going man! 🎣
@@CactusWackerThanks! I bought it at Cabelas a few years ago. I haven’t found it again lol
Damn 😂
@@CactusWacker just looked at the tag. It’s by Red Head Brand CO
Our species, homo Sapiens has been on Earth for 200 thousand years. For 99.5% of our species history we were constantly in nature. Survival demanded we be in tune with the natural world. Technology and civilization have torn us away. from nature. Everything you say is true. The more we are immersed in nature the more our souls resonate in good ways. Thanks
So true! The good things is that it is little to no cost to get out there as much as you possibly can. 🎣
My deer woods never been about killing for me it's about thinking about everyone that's gone
I hope those woods bring you peace. Everyone that is gone is right there with you
Amen to that. Not only the act of fly fishing nor tying is relaxing, but also the act of preparing rest of the gear for tomorrows fly fishing "trip" is relaxing and charges my "batteries".
Same here! I start feeling better the instant I know I’m planning to get on the water.
For me it has become about being out on the water, the rhythm of casting, trying to out think the fish, and finding the peace that being out on the water brings. There have been many days where I didn't catch a thing but I didn't feel like it was a wasted day. Any day on the water is a great day.
Yes! That’s what it’s all about, the art of fly fishing is such a beautiful thing.
I haven't gone fishing to catch fish in 30 years. It is mostly about being one with nature and enjoying the solitude.
Dang….I hope to be there myself one day! I still have to catch myself and remember to enjoy the simple opportunity of being a witness to natures beauty.
Well said. Fly Fishing is my PTSD therapy. Just throwing line in the back yard with no fly attached still helps me. Being on the water is the ultimate solace for me. Of course I am at the old guy stage of I just love to be out there. Catching fish is a bonus ;-) Fish On Brother!
Lol “the old guy stage” just means you’re more wise! Thanks for watching, I hope fly fishing continues to be a successful therapeutic avenue for you.
Well said.
True!
Yep , fly fishing sucks everyone! Please find another hobby and leave me alone 😁
Lol 😂
Well said man! Most of the time i sit and watch and listen then I do fishing and just enjoy everything around me at that moment!
That’s the way to be! There’s a lot to take in when you pay attention.
