Watching him making the nails. Is this the reason why old nails I might find have a flat tip?

I typed the captions out, and then ran them through Google translate. My transcription may not be prefect, and I may have gotten a letter or two wrong. Anyway, here are my transcriptions and the associated translation. Spiksmide. Spiksmide. In the parish of Lerbäck north of Askersund, nail forging has existed as a home industry since the 18th century and about 100 nail forges are still in the parish. --- Upptagningen ledd av Friherre Nils Akerhielm. Foto: G. A. Gustafson. The recording was led by Baron Nils Akerhielm. Photo: G. A. Gustafson. --- Officin: SVENSK FILMINDUSTRI. Officin: SWEDISH FILM INDUSTRY. The nail is forged by iron teeth, which are heated in an ashtray. The nail is hammered against the anvil. The hammering is done so that for each stroke of the hammer the tin is turned a quarter turn and at the next stroke it is turned back. To achieve professional skill, blacksmiths, as children, must learn forging. The nail, which was used for boat nails, is mainly exported to Finland, Norway and the Netherlands. --- OXSKOSMIDE förekom ända till början av 1900-talet som hemindustri i Karintorps by, belägen omkring 2 mil norr om Askersund OXSKOSMIDE existed until the beginning of the 20th century as a home industry in Karintorps village, located about 20 km north of Askersund --- Oxskor äro antingen sommareller vinterskor och äro de förstnämnda alltid släta, de senare däremot äro antingen vårtskor med rand eller skor med fram- och bakhakar. Ox shoes are either summer or winter shoes and the former are always smooth, the latter, on the other hand, are either wart shoes with stripes or shoes with front and rear hooks. FORGING OF SUMMER SHOES. Forging, beating the seams and felling of shoe from the toe. Stamping of the seam holes and clogging of the seam takes place in the same way when forging all ox shoes and is shown later. --- SMIDNING AV VåRTSKOR MED RAND. Smidning och sättning av vårtan. FORGING WARTS SHOES WITH RAND. Forging and setting of the wart. --- Slagning av sömranden och avhuggning från tenen. Beating of the seams and felling from the toe. --- SMIDNING AV OXSKOR MED FRAM- OCH BAKHAKAR. Smidning. FORGING OF BEEF SHOES WITH FRONT AND REAR CHAINS. Forging. {Google suggested that I may have meant: FORGING SHOES WITH FRONT AND REAR HOOVES. Forging of the front hook and felling from the toe. --- Nedslagning av bakkanten. Lowering of the trailing edge. --- Slagning av bakkanten. Beating of the trailing edge. --- Stampning av sömhålen. Stamping of the seam holes. --- Då falsen igenslagits äro oxskorna färdiga. When the seam is clogged the ox shoes finished. When the ox shoes are ready, they are connected those in the bundle with 16 shoes in each to be fit for a pair of oxen. --- Enbladig ramsåg. Single-blade frame saw. --- Upptagningen ledd av Amanuens Torsten Althin. Foto: G. A. Gustafson. The recording led by Amanuens Torsten Althin. Photo: G. A. Gustafson. The archetype of our modern sawmill is the monocotyledonous the "nick saw" still to be found in a couple of places in Västergötland. Such a saw is found in Björlanda the parish about the middle between Gothenburg and Borås. The log is rolled up and fastened in one on two logs trailing "wagon". --- Vattenhjulet, som genom en vevstake driver sågramen. The water wheel, as through a connecting rod drives the saw frame. The next picture shows the "nick feed". Through levers from the saw frame, a gear is driven one tooth at a time, whereby a chain attached to the far end of the trolley is wound up on the shaft of the gear. When a plank is sawn out, the log is pulled back to its original position by chains, which wind up on a shaft, driven by the water wheel located under the saw. --- Nytt"skär" ansättes. A new "cut" is hired. --- Slut. Final.

I had seen tis from a Swedish site, wanted to show it to a friend and student and thankfully you put it here. People may not realize that the metal they ware working with is some of the softest iron ever made and could be worked from a white heat to cold. It was, of course, called Swedish iron in this country. Also made in Norway and Russia, no one makes it any longer.

+Bob Patrick Look up pure iron, or wrought iron. Still made.

Hi. Hadn't been to the sie for some time. Having worked with all 3 metals, the Swedish charcoal iron ceased to be made in the 1960's, as did wrought iron. Pure iron is electro-chemically prepared and is very soft, but a little different than the Swedish iron. To the best of my knowledge, wrought iron available in new bars today is repuddled old iron from Great Britain or salvaged iron, and has distributed siliceous slag distributed through it. The wrought iron was manufactured using coke made from coal and behaves differently than the Swedish iron, which can be worked until cold. Wrought iron does not behave well below a red heat. While perhaps not the best expert on hand forging nails I have made 10's of thousands of them. The Colonial Williamsburg, Inc. smiths may be the top experts on making them
