It's Labor Day here in the United States, so it's a good opportunity to pay tribute all of the people who organized then and organize now to make jobs better for workers. 💪 This classic labor song was written by Woody Guthrie in 1940 and it's been sung by unions all around the world since. One of my favorite recordings of "Union Maid" was made by two people who knew Woody Guthrie better than most - Pete Seeger and Woody's son, Arlo.

Megan and I just returned from a cruise to Hawaii, where we spent a week on board the 'Pride of America.' We stayed two days in Maui and caught a beautiful sunset from the ship as it left the island. A fine rendition, sir! As much as I enjoy Tams' version (and I always well up a bit when I hear it), I am struck by how much it differs in tone and spirit from the lyrics from Queen Anne's day. Originally, it sounded very much like a jaunty recruiting song that mixed a bit of patriotism with the desire to escape the mundane cares and responsibilities of civilian life; it also sold service in the army as a way to achieve social equality, in a way. Tams' lyrics are beautiful, but they also strike me as a relatively somber - and modern - take on the soldier's life.
Thank you! I’ve thought the same thing about the Queen Anne and John Tams versions of the song. I like them both but keep coming back to Tams.

@@JBrennanMusic Out of the 3 concerts I've been to theirs's was my favorite. It was interactive and fun because of all of the Shanties
I love the Longest John’s. It cost me $2500 to go to their concert in Chicago. I found it absolutely raucous. The flashing lights, Robbie jumping all over the stage. I was right up front but could barely see JD or Andy. The drums were so loud I couldn’t hear the singing. I hated it.
@@nbenefiel How did it cost you that much? I paid I wanna say $40 for my ticket. I wasn't front row or anything, but I didn't need to be and I prefer to be more towards the back anyway.
@@Food24112 My husband and son came. We had to travel to Chicago and spend two nights in a hotel. The tickets were the least of it. Two dinners and lunch, it added up. I’ve loved folk music all of my life. I bought the tickets in early October. After the concert,I just assumed they had changed their style. Then the day after, they posted the most beautiful acapella version of Shenandoah that I’ve heard since Paul Robeson. Go figure😛

You tend to not decide to go down when singing, you stick to moving up. (drinkin not thinking, browsing youtube.) why is that? I enjoyed it but you stick to the same octave in alot of songs. not alot of moving out of that range. Sounds great though!!!!!! I enjoyed it!
A lot of the songs tend to be in either D or G, so that’s part of it. Another thing is that I’ve always had trouble singing into the bass level. My voice can’t go that low so by default I aim higher! 😁 Thank you!
