Why I Play Dungeons & Dragons — An Introvert's Perspective
My name is Joe. I play Dungeons & Dragons. And I'm an introvert.
This is a short video as to why I play D&D.
Introverts and Extroverts in Dungeons & Dragons
Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) has often been seen as a game for introverts, due to its nature as a social activity that often takes place in private settings. However, this perception is not entirely accurate.
Introverts in D&D
Comfort in Smaller Groups: Introverts often feel more comfortable in smaller groups, which is common in D&D campaigns.
Enjoyment of Imagination: The imaginative world of D&D can provide a safe and stimulating environment for introverts.
Reduced Social Anxiety: For some introverts, the structure and rules of D&D can help re...

I consider myself more introverted than extroverted, I would say my wife is definitely the one that enjoys having company or going places to be around a lot of people who are close friends, etc. When I think back to when I was in High School, the amount of time that I spent, especially my 8th Grade year of Junior High and my Freshman year of High School making characters for AD&D and using my modules to play a game of D&D by myself, because I didn't have a any neighborhood friends who were interested in D&D. It wasn't until I was a Junior in High School that I met 2 or 3 other guys that actually played tabletop RPGs, and even introduced me to the Palladium System (RIFTS, etc.) and Hero RPGs. Looking back now, I played those games by myself because I didn't know anyone else interested. However, even today, because I live in a fairly rural area, I don't have good gaming stores nearby, and I don't live close enough to walk to one if I did. I occasionally run my wife through D&D with Henchman or Hirelings to accompany her character, because I don't use the Forbidden DM-PC. Thank you for sharing these thoughts!

I was lucky enough to have my D&D friends close by. In fact, my best friend when I was in elementary school lived half a block away. And, I had another part-time D&D friend who lived 2 doors away. It's great that you can game with your wife, and I've DMed many games controlling one of the PCs. You have to be flexible. 😀 BTW, have you tried the random dungeon generator in the back of the AD&D DMG? That's a great way to play a solo game. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Being an introvert does not mean being shy, nor does it mean being socially awkward. There are shy extroverts and outgoing introverts. The difference is that introverts lose energy in social situations, while extroverts gain energy from it. An introvert can be someone who is the life of the party, but leaves early. The shy extrovert shows up early and is last to leave but is a wallflower all night hoping someone talks to them. Lets stop conflating introversion with some kind of social anxiety or other mental illness that needs to be overcome, please.

I appreciate the intellectual examination, but the shaky cam is making me sick. If WotC had any brains at all, they would fork D&D with the current as Classic D&D and in parallel create a whole new D&D system with modern game mechanics. Current D&D with its swingy d20, inflating hit points, nonsensical saving throws, abstract armor, only six abilities, are all outdated game mechanics.

The most insidious part of this for me is the language of "our fans". Who does WOTC consider to be "their fans"? Throughout all my time playing D&D, I've never thought of myself as a "fan" of D&D, and especially not as a "fan" of WOTC. I've been a "player" of D&D, I've been a "DM" running D&D, now I consider myself a game designer using the framework of D&D. None of that is being a "fan" of D&D though, and that's what concerns me about the future of D&D. I've noticed over the last 4 or 5 years, ever since the lockdowns really, that there's been a change in the attitude of new D&D players, they're now much more like that "fan", the person who buys licensed merchandise irrelevant to the gameplay experience. WOTC seem to be trying to create more of those people, abandoning the traditional non-"fan" players in the process.

    • @dnd-and-philosophy
      @dnd-and-philosophy 9 дней назад

First, I'd love to see some of your game designs. I used to buy new RPGs, not to play, but to read. RPGs are a genre to me, like a new fantasy novel. Second, the lockdown messed up many of us in ways that will take more time to correct. It's like we finally saw through the illusion of the fire on the wall within Plato's cave, found the exit and walked towards it, but someone blocked the exit with a boulder. We're social creatures, often giving more merit to other peoples' opinions and not our own. The "fan" mentality is a natural consequence of wanting to belong to a larger whole. We don't have all the answers, want things to be simple, and we don't want to be wrong. This is how our biases form, why FOMO is so powerful to some, and removed our focus from our own goals, desires, and ambitions. When I experience something that shocks me or enrages me, that's when I know I need to take a minute to stop and think. I need to take the time to assess whether it's a true belief for me, or if I'm emulating someone else's belief that was built from fear. Gaming allows my imagination to run wild, has made me more aware of my own biases, and has led to some amazing growth. Thanks for the comment.

The greatest thing D&D has done for me over the last 10 years: It's the reason that I've gone out and played other games. I've found no shortage of other options out there, the only challenge is finding people that are willing to come of the WotC tiddy, because they're completely unaware that D&D isn't the only fantasy role-playing game. As it stands now, D&D is going to be a lifestyle brand. It'll be like Betty Boop- it'll just be some logo slapped on products at Wal-Mart. Hopefully this Stranger Things and Critical Role trend will die off soon, and Hasbro can do whatever they please with D&D while actual players will adapt and overcome- and innovate. As for the 'digitization'? Yeah, kiss the inside of my ass, WotC. Half the reason I stayed sane through my various deployments in the military was because we had pencils, paper, and some physical D&D books.

He had a strong will, body, and heart. He survived his deployments and returned home safely. But several years ago at Chirstmas time, he had a stroke. We played D&D as kids whenever we could. D&D has changed my life in many ways as a social game of imagination. It's changed many lives for the better. Keep playing your way and it'll never go away.

I feel fortune that I have the ability to craft my own game material to game from. If had to just choose a popular brand, and the big ones were what were available to me today, I just wouldn't. AD&D is the game that made me decide I could do better, I hate that game so much, the ruleset is so backwards and oddly arbitrary. 3rd Edition was the first game that had a framework I felt I could really work within, and both 4th and 5th editions ( and now whatever they are calling the newest edition) felt like major steps backwards to me. Mind you, I think 3rd edition has a lot of issues, but I can patch it easily to fix the things I don't like without reinventing everything. I'm only sad that GURPS never got a d20 system overhaul, I am a lover of heavy customization that has mechanical effects, but the base systems in GURPS (roll under systems are abominations) kept me from really enjoying it.

Hasbro purchased WotC for Pokemon. At that time WotC had the license to make the Pokemon card game but shortly after Hasbro getting WotC the Pokemon Company took the rights back. Hasbro did NOT buy WotC for D&D. Hasbro never even mentioned D&D on any of its yearly financial reports until about 2018, 2019 when the toy division started hemorrhaging and 5e was financially secure. Right now the only part of Hasbro making any money is in the digital realm. Monopoly Go IS why Hasbro is still ticking. It's not D&D. It's not even really Magic Arena but that is doing a lot better than D&D. Digitizing D&D is trying to break a 50 year tradition that a lot of traditional players will just not buy into.

    I’ll tell you…

I think the time for simpler pen and paper TTRPGs (and their VTT representations) is here. D&D is clearly taking the video game path, going whale hunting. It creates an awesome opportunity for games that aren't so complex that you need a top-end computer to participate in them.

@@BobMcDowell amen. I love realistic games without the fuss of excessive complexity.

@@dnd-and-philosophy I don't really think those two things can co-exist. Complexity typically arrives in order to try and make something more realistic and fleshed out rather than putting the onus on the game master to just make spot judgments. Considering I think Pathfinder 1.0 is still the best system created to date in general, I guess I'm more on the side of complexity. I remember not getting into 5E because it felt "dumbed down" to me. I was ecstatic to move away from the over simplicity of AD&D 2nd Edition to 3rd Edition, which made many rules changes I loved (Adding dice to numbers to overcome a target number is the most intuitive mechanic that exists, and the weird and very arbitrary table for Saving Thows being turned into a formula). I honestly though that Palladium would be the next big thing, but it didn't really catch on for some reason.

From what I can tell by looking elsewhere, the Dungeon Dudes have already made a video talking about the inclusion of the "bloodied" condition for the 2024 Edition of D&D. The following video is from 3 days ago: ruclips.net/video/NMgHngNIdOg/видео.html

I personally don't see a problem with moving D&D to the digital realm. They could even import OD&D, BD&D, AD&D 1 & 2, D&D 3 & 4 into the D&D Beyond atmosphere and dominate other VTT's with little comparable effort on their part. Digital gaming has allowed me to meet so many wonderful people and play a game I never thought I could have, with my son across the world! I certainly don't think the direction they are maneuvering D&D '24 into is healthy or profitable in the long term, but it does open a possibility of bring in older edition fans into the digital realm, extending the longevity of the digital tools and profit margin. I just don't have any hopes that they are smart enough to do so.

WOTC is entirely focused on creating a walled garden ecosystem here, there is absolutely zero chance they'll import old versions when they barely even acknowledge the existence of those versions, and they're unhappy about the fact a lot of people rejected their repackaging of 5e.
