Interviewing participants, like surveys, can be done well, or very poorly. When a person is not prepared for a user interview, it shows. Amateur interviews happen when: • You don’t ask the right questions • You ask questions filled with bias or are leading • You don’t gain information that the team can take action on • You don’t want these things on YOUR next user interview. This talk helps pre...

Excellent video explaining the JTBD framework with AI . Thank you
Gonzalez Barbara Jackson Cynthia Hall Mary
Thank you, that was one of the best overviews of the reality of UX research efforts
Are the years in the dates wrong or is this an older recording?
I like the examples you share Don. You are so awesome. I like your quote 'Get designers in the position of influence'. Love it!!
Sir Don Norman voice is so soft and his every word is meaningful. Really i appreciate to listen Great UX Guru. 😊😊
Really enjoyed this talk. Looking forward to learning more!
First of all, this was a great talk and great discussion. "When bootcamps tell you... - _there's an incentive to make it sound like this is doable..._" -- we can only speak for _ourselves_, but we tell everyone the truth. We spend the time trying to talk them out of it. It's going to be a lot of work. You're going to have to be _clever_ and _make your own luck_. Most people fail. (even though we'll bust our asses doing everything we can for you). At the same time, "Designer" might be the only job there in the not-so-distant future. :shrug
Found this super helpful as someone who is trying to do user research at a B2B startup. Thank you.
This was incredibly insightful and full of helpful tips. Thank you very much! 💙 🙏🏻
thank you, I am glad!
Thank you so much for this insightful presentation!
This was an eye-opening talk, thanks UXRS and Hang for having this conversation publicly. As a pandemic bootcamp grad with experience in Marketing field prior to switch: I can relate to what Hang went thru i.e. daily research & reading atop of applying for positions and networking online and real-life and it can get exhausting so save yourself time and space for self-care and fun activities. Then and now, I get feedback from folx hiring that they're looking for someone "more senior" including hidden job market/unlisted positions I've been referred to by friends/my network which is sometimes disheartening. I believe i have both hard/technical and soft skills (from my coaching and counselling background) and I'm still doing freelance/contracts since grad. I get interviews (up to round 3, and presentation pitch opportunities from productizing myself as a DAAS), I do just think sometimes it's not a culture fit so these organizations use the "more senior" line above. I would love to be in a FT design position this year; this video helped me with the valuable perspective that some things are just outside of my control. Thank you!
Hey I'm a self trained UX Researcher, Concepter & Facilitator looking for an entry-level role in Berlin, Germany. Please hit me up, if you have an opening available.
I believe that stay out of the market for too long will make more difficult for you to get hired so I think that even you have a financial runway for a year and a half doesn't mean you should stay out of the market for that long
Oh my god, this is the single best hiring advice/insight I have ever come across. Thanks to Hang who was able to explain it so eloquently from a UX designer's and recruiter's perspective!
Agreed - While I have been into same org, I was considered as someone with 3 years of experience and even was getting promotion (at 1 yr experience), then i changed, but during the interview they thought i didn't have experience, but then while working they thought I had 4 years approx. I am good at getting the job done and creating value, but not good with interviews it seems. While I saw designers who were really bad, but getting good interviews. Did Adobe and google interview till last round. Working on myself now.
Excellent points; having a unique value proposition and creating content and connections - good strategy
Thank you for the opportunity!
👋🏻 Great 🎯
Great presentation. Just want to note that Portugal has a pretty good healthcare system, much lower maternal mortality than the US (which has higher maternal mortality than other developed countries), and advanced perinatal care.
This presentation could have been better structured.
Thanks for recording such an amazing session. Organisations, groups and individuals can turn to this insightful Webinar to learn about the implementation, planning and execution of participatory research to come up with solutions to problems while ensuring diversity and inclusion so that everyone is part of the solution. I learned so much. Thanks and much appreciated!
One of the best presentations I heared 🤩
Do you have any suggestions for recruiting participants for moderated onsite recruiting?
Love this discussion! Thank you for sharing!
Hi Amanda, can I ask what presentation software you were using?
So this is just another democratization presentation. I thought i would see something different other than training non-researchers to do research. If there is a user research debt, instead of spending our time training other people to do subpar research, why can't we hire more User Researchers? Do User Researchers not have enough work or aren't spread too thin generally so that they can spend time training others? What other disciplines need to democratize their profession? Backend developers? Product Managers? Or do they keep control of their own domains? Why is it only User Researchers that need to democratize this? How does this democratization mindset further or improve our profession as User Researchers?
Useful and insightful presentation, Jean is clearly an expert in the topic. Thanks for posting the video online.
This was truly awesome 👌 👏
Thanks a ton for sharing this... it is in great detail... really helpful 👍
i love her
Thanks again for the event!
Hi Debbie!
Debbie dropping truth bombs!
Loved listening in, thanks for this :)
kinda sus if you ask me 😁
Why there are so many muted audio in the video recording?
Hi Michele, I didn't see the tutorials by the students on thematic analysis on the resources doc. Can you kindly advise? Thx
Hi Heather. You can find in the resources document listed as "Article: 3 ways to analyze and synthesize (Fuel Your Curiosity newsletter)". Here is a direct link www.curiositytank.com/blog/3-ways-to-analyze-and-synthesize-vive-la-difference. Enjoy!
Thanks for hosting!
Thanks for all this useful info! What can you do if you want to report your impact or even specify the goal of research but you're bound by NDAs?
Thanks for making this available! Attended the live session and appreciated watching it again :)
This is a fantastic resource, and a wonderful exploration of research repositories from the simple to the complex. Context of use, needs assessment, company culture, portability, measure of impact, and other finer threads to support anyone needing to better articulate the need for - or to caution against the endeavor of creating a repository.

Thanks for sharing Meena. Hello Jen, Lorie, and Lauren! I found your description in the "Plan" phase where you discuss making visible the difference between the ideal and adjusted plan incredibly cogent. I am working to surface this issue internally. It's good for researchers to point this out - for our own sanity and for the benefit of retrospectives. When comparing projects and methods used, we must also acknowledge how adjustments were made to fit within specific constraints and how doing so may have impacted outcomes.
honest and common sense advice! gotta love Jen
Very helpful - thank you
Great event. Please keep sharing this awesome insights
This is super interesting
