Yes right, we use * to match any character and then we add 2 before the closing parentheses to tell Excel that we are looking for a wildcard search and not exact match.

Very good question. Answer: The default behavior of MS Excel is that it does not show the cell borders when you apply background color to a range of cells (for example, A2:D5), but there is a workaround for it. You can select the range, go to Borders->scroll down to More Borders->apply borders to all parts of the cells->select color->more colors->Custome->provide value 217,217,217 to Red, Green, Blue respectively (this is the default light grey color of MS Excel cell borders). Now, if you give background color to this range, the cell borders will remain there.

It is a great scenario that you mentioned here. Let me answer it below: The Excel's data validation feature does not automatically recheck the rule when the value is changed in column C as you mentioned above, but there are other ways to enforce the rule to be applied. 1. We can create a HELPER column to the right of the table(for example we select column E in this case) and add this formula: =IF(D3>C3, TRUE, FALSE) Then we can select the range in column D (where we want to apply to validation rule), go to Data Validation->Custom and add this formula instead of the previous one: =E3 Now, when we add values to columns C and D, the data validation rule will be rechecked and reapplied on both of the columns. 2. We can use VBA to enforce the data validation checks. Kindly let me know if you apply this and get the desired results.

@@AwesomeData01 I don't know anything about VBA so your method-2 is not for me. I followed all steps of method-1 in my Excel-365 (in Microsoft's OneDrive) and nothing happened (I could change the values in both columns as per my whim without generating any error). 🤔 Then, I tried replicating all that in my offline Excel (2016 version) too, still nothing happened. (I could still change the values as per whim). UPDATE: Apologies! I was applying your formula for column E as a 'validation rule' for entire column E. Made amends just now and applied that formula in cell E1. Then, set the validation rule in D1 to "= $E1". Next, I dragged cell E1 till E5. FALSE was filled in cells E1 through E5. After that, in C1, I entered 10 and the moment I shifted to D1, it threw the validation error (even though I had entered nothing in D1). So I erased 10 in C1 and then entered 20 in D1. No error thrown and FALSE in E1 changed to TRUE (which is alright). So, in the below rows, I had to first enter a value in D column and only then I was allowed to enter a value in C column.

​​@@echodelta7680 I checked in my Excel file, the method worked perfectly and then I suggested it to you. Excel versions differ from each other and I use the latest version of Excel 365. You may double check the IF() function which you enter in column E to make sure it is correct.

@@AwesomeData01 Yes. One has to explicitly add '$' sign while selecting cells in 365. That did the trick for me.

Yes, the cell reference must be locked so the range remains the same.
