Although this sounds like science fiction, it is quickly becoming a science fact in the emerging field of brain training for tactical operators. On this episode of The Debrief we will explore the science of brain training for tactical operators ...

The topic of resilience for first responders has fortunately become a more common discussion. As the rate of suicides, addiction and burnout rise, discussions of grit or internal fortitude against adversity have become a frequent topic for articles, speeches and conference courses. My guest today knows a great deal about this topic. Justin Dodge is a 28-year veteran of the Denver Police Departm...

God please bless and protect every single law enforcement officer, in Jesus' Name, amen.
I wonder if reaching out to your federal partners - USSS, FBI - might help you get some quieter drills for installing covert listening devices?
I was kept late the night of the incident on a late arrest. While typing my report, I remember hearing the radio traffic regarding the ONA and turned to that channel right after the initial patrol units were fired on. I was floored when it became clear by the radio traffic those Officers allowed the victim to leave with the ambulance WITHOUT an Officer with her and without being adequately questioned about the incident. Obviously this was an egregious error. The second main thing was that there was still exigency to enter after being shot at because of the reason to go inside in the first place- there were victims inside that may be dying. Instead of making a hasty plan and acting on it, patrol Officers decided to wait for SWAT to arrive. Those are two egregious failures of the patrol Officers, only one of them understandable. That said, the heart and bravery of the SWAT guys that went in after was on full display during this debrief. I personally worked with a couple of the men who went in and I am proud to have served with them.
Thanks for your comment. Clearly this is a very difficult incident and there were certainly some errors made. The only slight correction to your comment would be that patrol actually did make a hasty plan and try to make entry almost immediately. Unfortunately, they were repelled by the suspect who shot at them as they breached the front door. It is a miracle none of the patrol officers were hit since there were on the porch at the door. Truly the bravery of these guys is beyond reproach.
Why doesn’t the SWAT teams have a Boston Dynamics recon dogs to go in before the breaching team. You guys need to up grade with ground drones for enter teams.
Money. Mostly.
It is not just money. It is also a complicated tactical question for a hostage rescue. If the objective is to stop the hostage taken before he can harm hostages sending in technology can actually trigger violence against the hostages not to mention compromise any element of surprise the team may have. Although we are certainly tech advocates, in this case the robot or drone would likely have just found the locked door and necessitated the team making entry anyways. On a barricade it's a clear opportunity for tech. Hostage rescue is much more complicated.
WCTRU is the real deal & the best cops I have ever worked with over my 24 year police career. Proud of their dedication & to be an alumni of such a great SWAT team!
People don't like or care about the police anymore, now is the opposite people suffer in the hands of the police they abused of they power and they showed 😢😢😢they kill civilians everywhere 😢😢 included kids because they think that a toy is a real rifle or pistol 😢😢😢
Although there are certainly a few tragedies like you describe, the far more typical case is actually violence by the community against police. It is very easy for the community to forget that men and women like this are the only hope for victims like the members of this family.
Incredible story, but what about the ghostly sounds at 30:01-30:10??? Did anyone else notice that?? Eerie
We went back and looked and listened but didn't find what you are talking about. Are you sure on the time?

Nice work!
Sounds like a clean extraction
Any culture that creates criminals is a sick culture.
I don’t know why the military lies. Guys get killed in training surprisingly often and in the fog of war even more often. Just tell the truth. It doesn’t diminish Pats heroism it just illustrates how incredibly dangerous combat is in all ways. I don’t think the public understands how many casualties are caused by accidents. Helos, vehicular, heat stroke, falling, drowning, the list goes on. The military is an inherently dangerous occupation even without going to combat. This is why we revere our veterans.
Completely agree with you. Well said!

This is a really amazing breakdown. I'm stoked I came across the channel! 🤙 Subscribed and sharing! Thanks!
Nice story. With a very Happy ending!
Great episode as always, the Border Patrol needs leadership training their “leaders” are just yes men with no justification for their reasoning or decisions. In the end they just want to avoid any and all responsibility in order to get promoted
Awesome work guys. We appreciate the shoutout. Please stay safe and keep up the great work!
The history of the ERT is crazy cool
Very interesting... getting some new training ideas.
Glad to hear it!
Wonderful interviewee! Master Sergeant Plumlee has a very dry and funny sense of humor😊
Thanks. What an amazing guy.
I found your podcast while listening to a Somalia podcast featuring Mr satterly. I really like the way you interview and I'll be listening to more of your content and subscribing. Thank you😊
Thanks so much!
Broward County failed everyone that day. This was another incident where one officer/deputy failures changed the world.
Truly a tragic event with lasting repercussions for a huge number of people.
this was an awesome interview. you deserve to go big time, beautiful work letting him really tell his story of such a tragic event.
Thank you!

There is zero context for this video. And for that reason, I’m out.

Fascinating episode. Incredibly informative. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!

Truly horrendous process this operator had to go through. The toll this must have had on his life.. I can only hope that the higher ups in the organizations involved take the time to listen to this story and make sure they learn from it. Thank you for this debrief.
Rodney king beating and the Los angeles riots Proved proved how ineffective Ineffective Militarized policeing is
The Rodney King case was way before any discussion of militarized policing actually.
@@thedebriefwithjonbecker The t v show s.w.a.t The main character was taken from daryl gates The chief of police during the rodney king incident The TV show swat was long befor the Rodney.King incident You are a young person or have old timers Take time to look up the t.V show swat And remember that the primary character who wanted to militarize the police was gerald gates Who would later become chief of police Child
Key moment at 33:02 “be worthy..” wow.
I can’t think of a better teacher than repetition. ESUs work volume is unmatched. If you go to a job and walk away feeling you got “lucky”, then you’re not up to snuff with your knowledge of your job.
Legendary police officer but the interviewer sometimes derailed the interview by making comments to sound like he "had been there". I know it's knit picking but I see it a lot on RUclips involving interviews with military pilots and police officers being interviewed by a former colleague. It's annoying. The interviewer shouldn't worry about making sure everyone knows he's as cool as his subject.
Thanks for your comment and I'm sorry you feel that way. I'd love to know where specifically you are talking about. I have indeed known Mike for about 30 years and have shared many common experiences, so that may have leaked though.
Question for the Lt. Do you find that operators use the negotiation skills while operating in a tactical environment, even if they're not assigned that role? An operator who still has contact with the susp perhaps engaging in negotiating type activities while on the stack?
One the most insightful military leader of our time. His ability to plan and conduct special operations intimidated many General Officers during our generation. While many were promoted to the highest levels they were promoted not on intellectual prowess and common sense leadership but on posturing and political activities. Pete was a driven leader who did what was best for his men and mission accomplishments in the most challenging environments.
I can't believe the balls on that supervisor near the end. Says "oh it worked out! See? You didn't need explosives!" just based on mere luck that the suspect opened up the door on his own. Facepalm. What a real ivory tower jerk.
Legitimately excited for the DME format. Our team can really benefit from that. Thank you for doing what you do, Jon!
Thanks! Please let us know what you think of them when they launch. Be safe!

Absolutely one of the most phenomenal episodes yet; thank you, Jon and Brittany!
Thanks so much!!
As a third generation member of ESU (1986-1998) I have pretty good understanding of how ESU evolved. Probably the question I get asked most often is: "why does ESU do so many things that are traditionally done by the fire department". The answer is simple. The NYC Charter which outlines the roles and responsibility of each city agency had for close to 100 years outlined the duties of the fire department, those duties were limited to fire prevention and fire extinguishment, PERIOD. All other NON-FIRE emergencies was the purview of The City of New York Police Department. When it became apparent that a separate unit in the NYPD was needed to handle these NON-FIRE emergencies, Emergency Service Division and eventually the Emergency Service Unit (ESU) was formed. In order to meet these requirements members of ESU had to be training in, first aid, water rescues, building collapses, high angle rope rescue, Haz-Mat and other NON-FIRE emergencies. In-fact up until as recently as the late 50's the a FDNY alarm and dispatch system was in each of the Emergency Squads throughout the city. Whereby the Fire Department would dispatch ESU units to various NON-FIRE emergencies through their alarms system (rings & bells), just like it did in dispatching fire companies from a fire station. It was not until 1989 that the City of New York amended it's Charter and shifted some of the NON-FIRE emergencies to the fire department. It was not until 1996 when FDNY absorbed the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) from the NYC Health and Hospital Corporation that Firefighters began First Responder Medical Training and started carrying oxygen on fire trucks. For a host of reasons ESU maintains it's training levels so that they can deal with ANY crisis that arrises. There are individual stories as to how and why certain Haz-Mat assignments, water rescues and other calls continue to be be the responsibility of NYPD ESU but that would take far more time to explain. I hope this helps explain some of the mystery of why ESU does what it does.
That is a fantastic explanation. Thanks for sharing it and thanks for the service you and your family have provided to the people of NYC!
@@thedebriefwithjonbecker Thank you Jon but the real thanks go to you. Curious why nypd and not fdny doesnt do the rope and water rescue?
The FDNY has a specialized unit called, "Rescue" that is trained to perform rope and water rescues.
