Can you please tell me that the crankshafts and short blocks on engines modifications J35Z and J35Y are the same?
My question is, just replacing the crank in this manner, how can you be sure of oil clearance in the rod bearings? Is there a way to check without removing the pistons and rods and using a micrometer to ensure the crank journals and the bearings have adequate clearance or too much clearance. I saw you are a master tech, and I am not doubting your skills or abilities
@@robertsise7898 yes ideally you would want to mic the crank journals and then plastiguage everything to ensure it is all within tolerance. However, Honda doesn’t require to do this and are treating this like a brake pad slap to keep costs down.
There are many J35 series nomenclature. My 2011 TSX v6 was built in Japan. I have never heard of this problem or recall.
This only affects GDI J35 engines. Your TSX V6 is port injection.
Thank you for the helpful video, just wondering what is your up to date alignment spec?

There is a huge difference between 100 thousand ,,, Hondas has 1.4 millions Huge diferent
THANK YOU for a super interesting video. Your explanations are top notch, easy to understand. Once again, I was glued to the screen 'til the end.
Would love a video on the boost gauge and install! Even if that means having to uninstall and re do it :)
How many hours does Honda pay techs for this?
@@droboyjr 9 bro. 9. Hours.
@nsxavier997 I’m a toyota tech and imo that’s just not enough but am I surprised? absolutely not. I’m curious about your opinion on it. Now, just like any job, once you do a few I’m sure you get faster and faster but I know what’s involved to get to that point of crank replacement and it’s a good bit. Drain oil, coolant, evac AC, drop subframe with engine, disconnect wire harness, separate trans with tc, etc. etc. etc. That’s a lot of damn work not to mention reinstallation and you can’t really afford to make any serious mistakes. 9 hours is kinda BS imo. I respect your work though 👍 Somebody has to lol.
@@droboyjr ayyyeee… fellow tech 🫡. My opinion on it is that Honda is going to going to continue to cut warranty labor times to avoid bankruptcy and insolvency.. but that is inevitable without a miracle. 1.4 million cars affected with this recall and on the low end they’re paying out approximately $1,200 for the repair. That’s over 1.4b dollars they’re paying to fix this mess. No matter how much money they make on new car sales, parts sales, and whatever other sectors they’re involved with will not recover the losses on this. Nobody sees this now. Wait till the street gets wind of their earnings report for Q4 2024.. that’s going to be bloody. Their stock price is already -16% YTD. Once investor confidence declines… there goes their cash flow. Technicians will always be good though. It’s not like we’re growing on trees. The way I see it is sure, short change us now and our pleasure will be witnessing the decline and downfall of what once was an awesome company.
Fantastically interesting video. Thank you for this and for explaining it so well; you should be a top level mechanics teacher for an auto manufacturer. I'm just a DIYer, but I was riveted to the screen for the entire video. THANK YOU.
@@frankobermaier3440 I really appreciate it! Check out my other follow up video which shows crankshaft replacement if you’d like!
Sounds great, almost NA sorta sound. I'm seriously thinking about selling my M3 for one of these. How does it feel in the corners? Good handling balance? Front end pointy or under-steery?
Ot: on my 997.1 turbo I was going to pull my two vvt solenoids and test and clean them but wanted to ask b4 how die I remove the metal zip zag shaped retaining clips holding the electrical connector or the solenoid? Pull, push down then pull etc? Don’t want to break something. Thanks for any help.
No worries. The old style OBD connectors you mentioned come off pretty easily. Just push the metal retainer inwards and pull.
@ wow ok push in and then pull. I’ve broke a few plastic ones on my s550 and didn’t want to be an issue on the 997 or fight it cause it’s kinda tight to get in there. Thank you for letting know. Enjoy your holiday season. Cheers
@ sorry one last ? B4 I try. Can I pull these VVTS by just removing the Y pipe & air box or does the engine need to be lowered? Thanks again.
I own a 2020 Honda Ridgeline, should I be concerned with the bearings nightmare.
Honda is under investigation by the NHTSA for bearing failures. Vehicles affected on the Honda side: 1.4 million. You might be seeing a letter in the mail.
😑
This is awesome!! Also considering buying a FOIS too!! How is it a week later?
Just as good as the day I bought it (have had it for about a month now). I choose to wear it over my other watches but it might just be because of the honeymoon phase. I will say that I do prefer the speedmaster over my DateJust. I think that my go to will always be the Submariner though.
Why not use assembly lubricant instead of motor oil? Also I didnt hear you talking about if the connecting rods are of the fractured type or machined?
@@ericcindycrowder7482 didn’t care enough to actually go out and buy assembly lube (manufacturer or dealership doesn’t supply it). Since I am already at a net loss for doing this job, the last thing I want to do is go out and spend my own money on something to assemble an engine. Oil is supplied. Just working with what I have.
I think I might have dodged a bullet with a '23 RDX. I knew the 1.5L turbos had problems so I purposely avoided those.
@@MrSupernova111 surprisingly we don’t see too many issues with the 3rd gen RDX. They seem to be super reliable and fairly well built. The only ‘major’ issues with those cars are in the first years (2019-2020) that had massive communication problems for the infotainment. Panoramic sunroofs were also problematic. But the powertrain on that car is pretty stout. I think in the time that it has been out I have only had to replace one or two transmissions and only 1 cylinder head due to overheating. They seem to have ironed out all the kinks in that car and I would feel comfortable buying a 22-25 model. They also drive nice and smooth for being the entry level small SUV.
@@NSXavier997 . I heard about those issues before purchasing my vehicle but I decided those are minor concerns compared to having oil dilution, etc... with the 1.5L turbos. So far so good so we'll see how far I get with this vehicle. I plan to keep it for a long time. Edit: I should add that I also didn't want an EV so Acura was a good choice for me. The other option was Mazda. Cheers!
We just bought a 25 Odyssey, hopefully Honda's got it figured out by now
Great car, would be even nicer with euro bumpers
If Honda has. To do this for a million four hundred thousand engines they will bankrupt the company
Stay tuned for another video that I will be making which will outline the costs.
What is the cost of the short block? And how many hours of labour do they allow for this job
We're not doing short blocks anymore. If the engine has failed to the point of engine lock-up causing connecting rods to break, they have you replace the long block which magically changed price from $15,000 to $2,200 once the recall was released and HONDA had to eat costs of engine replacement. Convenient. This job doesn't pay what it should. It's like 9 hours of labor.
What is difference with RDX 3.5 V6 2018, prior to 2019 when they went to 4 cyl? Will tbe 2018 RDX be recalled?
@@jimkelly1613 No the 2nd generation RDX is not affected. Main difference between the two engines is one is port injected and the other is DI.
@NSXavier997 thank you. Do you know which is Direct Injected? I was under the impression the RDX is Direct Injected?
@ it is not. 2nd generation RDX is port injected
@@NSXavier997 that is good news but wonder why dealership says needs intake cleaning every 40,000 miles then. Would expect that for direct injection.
@ that’s just dealership snake oil they’re selling. Our dealership did away with all that BS and only sell brake fluid exchanges every 3 years like what Honda recommends. All that other intake cleaning fluff is just BS and doesn’t do anything don’t buy it.
I will definitely not be happy to have my Ridgeline engine torn down to this degree.
Neither would I.
@@NSXavier997 you did a great job, however will EVERY flat rate tech take such care? I don't know
Honda/Acura are junk nowadays
Thanks for making this video. Very informative to a potential buyer in the market for an MDX. Helps with knowing what to look for. Hey, tip for other buys. Ask the service center that did the recall to provide a copy of the warranty work order with parts list. They won’t be able to hide if the crank shaft, or other parts were also replaced.
My Milwaukee 3/8 mid torque impact has so much oil on it because of this recall 😂. The plastic bag is a good idea.
Why can't we see the replies in the comments? Does the most unit also act like the remote wire to turn on the amplifier?
@@ruicoelhoruic5678 not sure why you can’t see replies. No, I don’t think so. The amplifier has its own power source and is turned on with key on/ engine off, or engine run. The most converter box basically turns the RCA audio signal into a MOST signal that the amplifier can read and output.
@NSXavier997 Thank you. I'm want to do a headunit delete but run a bluetooth adapter to play music off my phone. Trying to work things out in my head what I might need
@@ruicoelhoruic5678 you will need a most converter box like the one in this video, and a Bluetooth module that has RCA audio outputs.
@NSXavier997 Great! That's what I was looking at, too. I love your car, keep it up!
Hey bro, just wondering for the selection of the oil, why did you use sae 5w-40 and do you know if the Ravenol RUP any good for this car?
That new j series block out of the official box may be the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen.
How much you got for that 2.2 with alignment 😂😂😂
@@browncaca 2.2 is a little too rich for Honda to be paying their techs.
Never buying another Honda .
@@antolismirnoff5513 I wouldn’t go that far… I’d say I wouldn’t buy another Honda right now.
@@NSXavier997 I was excited about the new Passport, but I'm betting it will also be recalled in a few years.
Great video! Would it be safe to assume a J35 with more than 100k miles is a safe bet? Wouldn't these types of issues reveal themselves well before that mileage mark? I'm looking at purchasing a higher-mileage 19-20 Odyssey. Thanks!
Does this happen with the 2007 Acura RL? I check Acura recalls by using my VIN number but said no recalls reported.
@@demarcustodd4437 no, that car is an example of a good car that Honda produced.
@ thank you for such a quick response. That’s a sigh of relief lol. I just recently got it last month but I love it so far.
Very informative video...Honda/Acura should tell customers to watch this to know what to expect. Just wondering if this is going to have to be done ever so many mile like you mentioned the bmw owners. My girlfriend just had her MDX worked on and they said just bearing replacement but now we are wondering if its just a bandaid fix or do you put in a properly sized rod bearing. I would think a plastic gage check at the very least. Anyway thanks again NSXavier!
Porsches and watches ☕️
Great job! Well done. Shame on Honda.
What happened to your integra type s?
I assume that similar vehicles that were purchased in Canada with J35 engines are also affected by this recall? Are these J35 engines manufactured in one plant and then sent to different assembly plants to be installed?
Excellent video presentation! You really know your stuff. Subscribed!
I hope your dealership appreciates the work you do. It's obvious you have a shitload of experience.
They don't. No dealership values their Technicians. Sad reality we live in. The Technicians are the backbone of any dealership and fixed operations literally keeps the lights on and the bills paid... yet, we're paid the least and are the least respected. Put it to you this way... we don't have first names we have employee numbers.
I'm looking at possibly purchasing a used 2014 Accord Coupe V6 - 6MT (haven't seen it yet). Are they affected by this issue at all. Any other known issues with 9th gen Accord i should pay attention, maybe electric power steering? (150k miles) This was very relaxing and enjoyable to watch! Thank you!
No I that generation is not affected as far as I know. I actually own the same car (2013)- and I have not received any recalls in the mail.
@@NSXavier997 Thank you! Are you happy with this car overall?
@@Mickey_Bauer Yea it has been great. Low maintenance. The only major things I have had to do to it were the timing belt in 2020, brake pads and rotors and tires. Everything else has been just general routine maintenance.
@@NSXavier997 awesome, thanks brother!
No, the J35Y1as in my '15 V6 Accord, and the J35Y2 in the manual-equiped Accords (all 2013 thru 2017 Accords) are not affected by all of these Honda/Acura Recalls.
I guess I need to get an oil analysis for my 2019 Odyssey. I’m told they have this issue as well.
Only Direct Injected J series are affected?
I'm currently considering a 2022 ~ 2025 Acura MDX. Should I be concerned with this issue "potentially" occurring on the newer model? Afterall, this J35Y5 variation has been in MDX for such a long time...?
When engineers build a model shouldn't they ensure and test an engine before it goes into production. Why should they get paid for not ensuring a part of the vehicle isn't assembled correctly. All vehicles are made with cheaper parts and a lack of quality.
@@rodgerpetrick6502 Yep. They Definitely don’t make them like they used to. I wouldn’t buy any new car today unless it was something high end like a PORSCHE. Primarily why I own 4 cars with the newest one being a 2013. All still running like tops.
@ fair. And this is true. However I can say that without a doubt, that they don’t make them like they used to. Taking Honda completely out of the equation; I would put more faith in a well sorted 1999 BMW M3 outlasting a 2024 BMW M4. It would be more reliable too. I guess I’m just a stubborn car enthusiast stuck in the late 90’s / early 2000’s lol
@@NSXavier997 Everything must change. It's just growing pains on the way to the future. People will laugh one day at how people had to drive vehicles. We'll just be teleported around. But for now, all I can do is get affordable transportation and try to find the most reliable one. I'm switching to Toyota. Almost ready to get a Camry hybrid. I think a floaty, numb boat will be a good change from the Hondas. I'll just focus on using it as a tool to get me places to experience life. A to B and then have fun at B and forget about the way I got there. No more Accords, no more Ridgeline.
@@NSXavier997 Those were the glory days of cars. I had a Nissan Frontier, stick, and it went 250k on just oil changes - original clutch was still on it when I sold it. AC stopped working. Radiator mounts rusted apart. But that was my favorite vehicle of all time because it took me to all the places I needed to go. By today's standard's it was a dangerous box , on casters. Rear wheel drive... fish-tailing through snowstorms on freeways. Loved it.
@@Jazz16-we1qc teleportation....or cancer. I'm sure many will still choose teleportation even being told of the risks.
Will an air oil separator and egr delete help with this issue? Can anybody chime in?
Any chance this is caused by "displacement on demand" engines? I have read of piston ring problems with those engines.
I don’t think this issue is directly related to that issue.
I did my 2007 acura TL type S myself about 3 months ago.
