Rethinking Character Rigs: Answering Questions

Here’s a link to the original video… ruclips.net/video/lAvqalfdknA/видео.html A couple things you should know before using the file… •If you want to frame the control using Maya’s “F” hotkey then you’ll need to turn off the “Overlay” option on the hud. This will put the controllers back where they would normally sit to make this option work. Overlay is also useful when you’re animating eyes and...
Rethinking Character Rigs

#3d #3danimation #3dart #maya #character #3dcharacter #learn3d As someone who has experience in both rigging and animation, I wanted to rethink the typical character rig and present it to the community as a way to evolve the art. Hopefully this will allow for better collaboration between the two departments, ultimately resulting in more efficient workflows. Here are a couple bits of additional ...
Ziva dynamics
This is really cool but if I'm being honest the movement doesn't make sense to me, for example why is the throat part moving so intensely?
The character has a legit swallow mechanic where the animation rig triggers a pull on the Larynx up into the neck disturbing his sternohyoid muscles... which is causing some of the extra movement... If it becomes too distracting to have that much details in the neck during the short, it can easily be toned back. We'll see. The technique of animated displacements certainly transfers a considerate amount of underlying movement.
Que mierda es esta
Tutorial series for beginner pls
God bless you ❤
Well done ! you are big brain
Very cool stuff. I do motion capture of primarily hands, not sure if techniques could be combined but would love to find out.
When you say "motion capture", are you talking about the resolving the bone location within the hand to capture the actions... or is it solving for the skin data similar to the 4d face capture (but for hands)?
this is nuts lol
This is awesome as always !
Sir can you make tutorial series for starting to end on Ziva dynamics
Rip Ziva, i wish there was a way i could get my hands on this
Man, you are incredible , i discovered your channel couple days ago and this is mind blowing.I need find the way how you are doing this with the hand ... wish you luck and thanks for anything what you will write or create in the future ;)
Thank you Tobias, glad you're liking the videos! Can't wait to show you more.
how???
You should probably take a look at the other videos on my channel. lol
Ziva service stops , now which software i use to make bonemuscle, fiscia, fat, skin, fur and which software to animate?
I'm still using Ziva on currently ongoing projects, but Adonis is on my list of software to try out. I'm guessing Houdini will be the backup everyone will go with. It's already used in significant amounts for CFX pipelines in quite a few houses.
@@markduv oki sir, tqs for telling ❤️🙌🏼
@@markduvsir I just saw the videos of Adonis, I'm just little curious and u the only one who can tell me. Is Adonis give us realistic animals animation?
Generally yes. Adonis is a VERY new product on the market, and in my investigations, it looks like its missing some parts of the pipeline. It does seem fast, which is nice... how much accuracy you’re giving up for all that speed will be interesting to investigate. There’s limited info right now with it as young as it is.
@@markduv oki sir🙌🏼. Tqs again ❤️
Do you typically build a full skeleton and muscle system for stylized cartoony characters? It seems like a lot work!
No, not for cartoony style characters... These skeleton/muscle setups typically bind you to realistic physics and are created to visually mimic real life. The extra work can really pay off, if that's the style you're looking for.
more interested how u've done bone simulation
I talk about it more in the video after this.
❤@@markduv
😳😳😳 Really really amazing work. I would like to try Ziva Dynamics but I don't know where to start. Could you make a tutorial or a course for beginners. A paid course of course.
Ziva rigs and sims are really great
underrated ASF WTF HOW IS THIS NOT FRICKING POPULAR DUDEEEEEEEEE
amazing
absolutely amazing!!! congratulations!!👏👏👏👏
"wheels turn based upon a friction on the actual surface". How does that work ? There is no friction in ZivaVFX :P
Ziva calls friction “Contact Sliding”. It’s an on or off option, but it works.
@@markduv Do you mean you used Contact Sliding Off ?
I was just saying that the option of friction is a binary choice. You are correct that “off” is the correct choice for this. lol
wow. just wow.
Glad you like it!
Great video! Can’t wait for more tutorials!
crazy
Sir please make details tutorial videos how to rigging it and how to apply ziva dynamics to character please sir ❤❤❤❤
As an animator, I've always HATED hand contacts like the last one on the table purely because of how long it takes to get the nuance of the contact. Amazing work!!
Yeah, same here. Hands never look right without that "squishy" fleshy deformation that really sells contact with the item it's interacting with. It'd be almost impossible to get out of a traditional anim rig.
Hi everyone. I'm a 2D animator with over 5 years of experience, familiar with ToonBoom Harmony. I'm starting to learn 3D this year to find a job in 3D industry. Where can I learn how to rig in 3D Maya, online, like in-depth, to understand what I'm doing, not just tutorial step by step? Pricing and time might not be the problem, if what I gain can justify the price.
Impressive stuff!!
Thanks RectangularDots!
How long did it roughly take to simulate this shot?
This playblast was the simulation of the soft tissue aspect of the process (which is a majority of it)... it takes about three quarters of a minute a frame to simulate/render.
this is amazing thank you for sharing you knowledge sir! I look forward to your videos.
I do have another video that's been on the backburner for a while. Can't wait to get it out.😃
Hello my friend. tutorial pls?❤
Are you attaching ziva muscle to other muscles or are all the attachments to bone?
I'm using attachments the same way a normal face uses real muscles. "Ziva Muscles" or Tissues is being pulled towards the bone or other tissues using attachments. Got it?
at frame 4:25 the red attachment is tissue to tissue? Like the upper lip tissue is attached to the lower lip tissue? Is the ziva bones controlling all the movement?
The red attachments you see there is both tissue to tissue and tissue to bone which does include the upperlip to the lowerlip. On frame 4:25 you can see red attachments floating outside the head that pull the dynamic tissue outward towards invisible bone objects to emulate a cheek puff.
omg you are a genius man congratulation for this great result
Thanks a lot!
you are a ziva vfx pioneer. I truly wish one day to to be capable of a small percentage of what you're able to do
The dynamic hand poses are mind blowing. You already know I got that notification bell on. The R&D for this stuff must be rough!
Thanks! Yeah, these R&D videos that I can release online, take a while to finish due to only being able to work on it during my spare (non-paid job) time.
Hello, can you please give me a tutorial? I really like your assembly. It’s amazing.
Your work is awesome sir can you make tutorial videos in details please🙏🙏🙏
Thanks! I may make one depending on work load. I do have an interesting video coming...
Great! I've tried simulating hand muscles and blood vessels using Ziva, but I always have trouble simulating blood vessels properly. They often get ignored in collisions. I've considered if it's because the vessels are too thin. Can you please help me with this?
Hello! While I can't see exactly what you're looking at, any thin items like blood vessels will need to have high collision tolerance settings. Ziva's default tissue collision settings (10^6) are set that way to speed up typical muscle rigs where some penetration is fine because it'll get covered up by fat. I'd also say, Ziva's collision system favors higher poly count geo objects, so an extra subdivision would probably help.
@@markduv Thank you so much!
No worries!
Very cool work! May I ask how do you bind the rotation to translation? How do I get this so I can study it or anyway to learn this?
There are a few different implementations of this in the rig, but the simplest one is just a math node that converts linear cm into degrees.
Please make a course on how to do this and your facial rigs in Ziva. I would immediately buy it.
That would be pretty cool to put together. For now, I have another topic I'm tackling at the moment for another video. lol
@@markduv Please do this! I would pay for it ASAP!!! :D
can you animate using mocap animation like metahuman animator? to make it look stylized?
I wasn't fully planning to do mocap facial animation for the short, so the facial rig is more geared towards being artist driven. There's no reason it couldn't be modified towards mocap. The face being inherently "alive" really helps cut down on the amount of keyframing you need to do.
I've always thought about this kind of stuff and wondered why no one's done it before
Its like it's the future or something. lol
This is cool
ok... adding automatic breathing is genius
One of the things I didn't get into in the video is that there's multiple levels of breathing delay applied to different body parts to get that overlapping action you'd want when animated. It will be cool to show it with the finished character fx applied.
Hello Mark, I hope you are very well. Your work is really amazing and great, I admire you a lot. I would like to ask you, where can one study or acquire such an advanced rigging course about this that you are showing us in your videos? I am really interested in learning in depth this field. If in the future you do a course on this I will be looking forward to purchase it. Greetings from Colombia.
Hello my Colombian friend! This video is mostly about what they'd call character FX, and only has a tiny bit about rigging. If you are looking at learning to rig, there are quite a bit of resources floating around out there today as it's quite a mature field of study. Everything from creating controls to vertex weighting. Character FX is a little more wild west and mostly spreads between Ziva and Houdini (for Muscle simulation). Ziva's muscle system is a little more mature, but some shops are embedded in Houdini's full service workflow. Maybe one of these days I'll do some videos about Ziva basics to get people started. Hmmm.
@@markduv Thank you very much, Mark, for your response. Your work is truly impressive and has sparked my interest in the field of character VFX. Thanks again for replying
incredible work!
Thanks Menny!
Would be interesting a workshop of eveyrhing you do with ziva , it's amazing.
I have another one coming that I can't say I've seen before. Glad you liked it!
It looks awesome !!
Thanks!
