The real C-17 can land in as little as 3500ft (1064m) and backup using it's thrust reversers. It is commonly demonstrated at air shows. In fact, most modern jets equipped with reversers can backup. It wasn't uncommon in the 80's for airliners (MD-80s, 727's, etc.) to back away from airport gates using reversers. A few accidents ended that fun.
