Welcome to Don Potter MTB (formerly Don's MTB Trail Guide). I'm an intermediate mountain bike rider that is in his early 60's that lives in Victoria, BC. I started my channel in the hopes that I can post videos that will assist riders that are looking to ride trails that they may not be familar with and are wanting to do some research so they don't have to attempt trails completely blind. My videos, for the most part, will depict the complete trail that I am riding at the time. I will also make an effort to give a narrative of the trail so as to assist the viewer. The videos will be far from perfect as I don't plan on doing a bunch of fancy editing. I hope you enjoy the videos.

Enjoy. I rode yesterday and the conditions were excellent.
nice video thanks for sharing
Thanks. It's a little boring at the beginning but gets more spicy on the down portions. Thanks for watching.
I thought Phil's was great although a little underwhelming. No steep, kinda tame. Great video thumbs up
Thanks for your comment. It was certainly nice to visit the area but the trails are definitely on the easier side. Perfect for cross country riders or people that don't really like much tech. I did all my riding in the Phil's Riding area. I unfortunately have no idea if the other areas around Bend are similiar to Phil's or not.
You're a strong technical climber
Thanks.
Good job climbing to Huge Ribbon. That is a huge effort and skill level Don.
Thanks. Climbing Breathless to the start of Huge Ribbon is both a technical and a cardio challenge. Especially for an old man :)
good job , we came over from vancouver in june primarily to ride creeper , had a similar experience trying to clean the trail , planning another trip this spring to give it another go . great video !
Thanks. I really enjoyed the trail and the challenges it offered. It's definitely a two way trail as well. A nice challenge going both ways.
It was great to meet you the other day, Don! Thanks again for the excellent videos.
It was nice to meet you as well. Thanks for all your positive comments regarding the videos.
It would be helpful to me as an 84 y/o mountain biker if you could express the steepness of the trail you are riding in terms of percentage of the grade. You were climbing what looked to me like about a 5 to 7% grade and managing to talk almost normally at the same time. I fall completely silent and have to concentrate on my breathing when the steepness gets past 5%.
You have a valid point as GoPro doesn't depict climbs or descents very well. Usually if I am doing a more techically difficult climb I will mention that. Nothing I really did in Bend was overly difficult or steep. This climb wasn't difficult. The most difficult climb was probably Rockstacker. Thanks for subscribing and thanks for the question.
Thanks for referencing the old names. Between the new naming, trail changes, and a dusty memory at the best of times, I can get mixed up on some of the trails and connections. Great vids! Thank you.
I glad you like them and find them helpful.
This is really helpful. I always get lost at Hartland 😂 and I am missing many good trails. Thanks. See you in the mountains.
I'm glad you found it helpful. 👍
Looks like a fun trail
How does this compare to Torpedo Run at Hartland?
I enjoyed the rock slab descents on Peanut Butter Knife Fight. Torpedo Run is probably twice as long and flowy and you have more chances to get air if that's what you enjoy.
Personally I prefer pbkf over torpedo run, pbkf has larger jumps but torpedo run has more jumps, also pbkf has a few slabs and requires much more brake control compared to torpedo run. Pbkf is a single black and torpedo run is an blue.
Nice video. My son and I had fun riding there this summer and also made some vids. What a great place to ride.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I will have some other videos coming out from the Jordie Lunn Bike Park in the near future.
That rock garden always gets me! I will try your line next time.
Sounds good. Thanks for watching.
Hello dear, I hope you are well. I really like your RUclips videos. Your RUclips account is not ranking due to many issues. If you want, you can send the videos to more people. For that video SEO should be done properly. I can help you with this. I am waiting for your reply. Thanks and Regards Robiul Hasan Balam
Hi Don, Loving these videos. Do you track your rides at all? Strava? Garmin watch/device? I would love to borrow your GPX route to try these trails myself! Or maybe you would let me join you one day!!
Sorry. No tracking. And as far as Garmin watches and stuff like that I am definitely not a tech guy. I don't even own a cell phone. I'm lucky I have been able to figure out how to do the videos and upload them. Thankfully that is easy. I do write out the route on the video discription. I know that's rather archaic but that is how I roll. As far as joining me on a ride that would be great. Just so you know I'm older and somewhat slow. Unfortunately I am on the mainland and probably will be for the next month or so. If you would like I can contact you through this thread when I return to Victoria and we can try and set up a ride. Let me know.
@@DonPotterMTB That sounds great! I was thinking you are the best darn climber I've ever seen and I wonder about keeping up with you at all?!
I do enjoy the climbs. I am more nervous on the descents. I'm in Whistler this week and I did Comfortably Numb which is a black diamond trail with lots of climbing. Luckily in our area the technical climbs really are not that long. I do ride slow so there shouldn't be any issues. I will let you know when I return to Victoria. As I'm retired I usually ride three times a week. Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday's usually around 10am.
Hi Alex, I am back in Victoria. If you want to join me on a ride at one point just let me know. As I said in one of my last messages I typically ride on Sunday, Tuesday & Thursday in the moring usually around 10. I can be open to other days and times as well. Let me know if you would like to ride.
Hey Don, have you ever checked out cobble hill? I haven't been there myself and also haven't heard much about it.
I have not. Aother person asked me the same question last year. I took a look at some of the trails on Tralforks but I have not as yet made it up there. I am in Whistler this week so some Whistler content will be published in the near future.
@@DonPotterMTB Looking forward to the whistler videos. Will we be seeing more of the trails from Jordie Lunn Bike Park?
There are more videos from Jordie Lunn to come. I have a stock pile of videos from different locations so I usually mix them up. As far as Whistler videos I am having issues with my GoPro. Hopefully I can resolve the issue during the week. There are a number of Whistler videos on my channel from last year if you're interested. Thanks for watching.
That trail seems a little underdeveloped.
For the five days that I was in Bend this trail was the most difficult. It was technical which I enjoy. Most trails in Bend tend to be very flowy and fast.
They should've "renamed" it: "Cereza Caliente Agachada"
Thanks for your videos. Appreciate being able to check out my local trails before riding them!
Thanks. I'm glad that you are finding them useful. For this video there is a second portion of Birth Control that I don't do as there is a rather janky steep rock roll that is outside of my skill set :)
Been to that single track at lighthouse trail and a british guy shouted at me saying "you're not supposed to cycle here". And now knowing that other cyclists go there, I'll keep coming back
Many people are confused about who can use which trails. I usually refer to Trailforks if I'm unsure. Regardless though I usually just try and take the high road and be polite and the majority of hikers do the same. Having said that I have had some interesting conversations with hikers on the west side of Mt. Work :)
Thanks for this video, had no idea what the climb looked like. Are there any other long climbs after this? Some maps show 1200-1600 elevation gain.
The Burro Pass climb is by far the most difficult climb and to be quite honest it's really only hard because of the elevation you are riding at. It's technically not that difficult. The next climb will be at the beginning of the Hazard County portion of TWE. It's not really that long but it did have some technical elements. The only other prolonged climbing is when you are on the Porcupine Rim 4x4 trail. That portion of TWE is quite long and there are lots of rock step ups. Enjoy the ride. It truely is an epic trail.
hard to see in the vid, but that last little bit of that roll is sketchy.
If you are referring to the off camber portion you are right. I won't do that roll if it is at all wet.
@@DonPotterMTB Yes, the offcamber slab with the gnarly last part. I've done it wet, but I can't say I enjoyed it or would do it again.
Thanks for the ride.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's a fun trail.
Nice trail. I was looking for some MTB trails. Will check this out. Thanks for the video. Is there a way to get the map of the trail?
The trail is a fun all mountain trail to ride. The trail is on Trailforks.
@@DonPotterMTB thank you
No problem. Welcome to the channel. There are plenty of videos of the local trails.
I spoke with Poison Spider Bicycles and they told me this trail was a black-double black for advanced riders. I just don't see it. Def some spicy sections to walk, but it seemed mostly doable for intermediate riders.
I would say that if you are a competent intermediate rider you wouldn't have an issue with 95% of the WE. There are definitely a few sections that would be considered more advanced. Just know your limitations and everything will work out.
Nice video....I ride Cache a lot but didn't know the names of some of the other trails (Legend, Hey Darryl). Do you have the distance/elevation for these rides? Thanks for making these.
Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Unfortunately I don't know the stats for the trails. They all used to be on Trailforks maybe 6 or 7 years ago. With the updated trail plan hopefully the CRD will allow SIMBS to put the trails back on Trailforks so the associated stats can be seen.
@@DonPotterMTB Thanks. Looking for the complete ride/route stats but i can piece it together.
You might find something on Strava. Good luck.
Hi Raoul. I am coming over to the mainland on Monday, July 8th. If you are still there and want to go for a ride during the week let me know.
@@DonPotterMTB Thanks for letting me know. I'm heading over Sunday and would like to get a ride in with you.
Hey Don great video I did the exact same route. Question, do you ever ride at cobble hill mountain?
If Cobble Hill Mountain is Burnt Bridge I haven't. I have been asked to go up to Burnt Bridge previously. I really enjoy climbing somewhat technical single track trails to get to the descent trails. From what I understand the climbing at Burnt Bridge is all done on service roads. Because of that I said I wasn't interested.
No cobble Hill mountain is seperate from Burnt bridge. I have ridden around burnt bridge quite a bit a number of years ago and yes we spent a lot of time on logging roads. I have hiked up cobble Hill mountain but I can't remember what the bike trails were like. I see there are trails on trail forks for the mountain.
I took a look at some of the trails on Trailforks. The few that I looked at had no videos. Perhaps one day if I want to explore I will go up there and take a look.
Where's the best place to park for access to these trails?
I don't ride the Thetis Trails that often. As far as I know there is no official start point or parking lot. When I do ride at Thetis I like to have a longer ride so I park at the top of Bellamy Rd.. You have access to Bellamy trail which will allow you to get to the Lighthouse Trail relatively quickly. From there you can do a fairly lengthy and fun loop. There is signage to help you navigate the area but having trailforks will definitely help. You are also able to park on Millstream near the Highlands Community Hall. From there you can access Millhouse Trail and Love Shack which will then intersect with Lighthouse Extension. I have never started from this point. Trailforks also says Love Shack is closed due to active logging. If you wanted to start closer to Electric House, Electric Light or Electric Avenue you can park in the area of Lost Lake Rd and Millstream. Again I have never parked in this area but there should be some parking on Millstream. There are definitely other areas to park behind Thetis Lake as well. I think that it is a fun area to ride and I should ride there more often. Hopefully this information helps.
EXCELLENT! Thanks for presenting!
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
These are greaat Don, i look forward to them!
Thanks. I appreciate your comments.
Good video! You climbing ability is very impressive! I’m not sure if I do the same Huge Ribbon as you, lol. Looked very different?
Thanks for the comment. I did do a couple of alternate lines on Huge Ribbon so that may have made the trail look a little different.
There are couple of technical rolls at the top viewpoint. I crashed there bad couple of years ago. Didn’t see it in your video, but maybe it was me who was off the huge ribbon trail :)
Nope that is the right trail. At one point near the lookout (timestamp 14:06) I say I'm taking an alternate line or a bypass and I sort of go around the lookout. There may still be a sign on a tree saying Alt Route. There are a couple of smaller rock rolls on the alt. line but still fun. I too had a fall on the lookout a few years ago so I now just go aound. My descending skills are not the strongest so I don't really push my luck.
@@DonPotterMTB awesome! Thanks for the vids.
Thanks for watching.
Hi Don. Your MTB trail series is SO valuable! I’m just getting back into MTB and I have a XC short travel bike (F/R) so this is awesome! I assume there are enough XC trails but most are All Mountain? 7 and Little Face look to be good XC trails.
I'm glad you are enjoying the series. I usually refer to most trails as all mountain or trail as they have some ups and some downs but generally require some pedalling. Hartland and Partridge both have many trails that are blue intermediate and both are excellent jump off point for those either starting or just getting back into mountain biking.
Thank you very much man! It helped me decide that as intermediate driver I would start I Kokopelli.
I'm glad I could help. Just to clarify the actual climb is not technical it is just the elevation that hits the rider pretty hard. I believe the climb was just under one mile long and then from there it is pretty much a decent.
@@DonPotterMTB Yeah, but from all the videos climb and descend looks pretty steep. So I am afraid, that I would run out of batteries, when I hit lower parts of the trail.
I would consider myself an intermediate rider as well. I can't say that I found anything in the higher parts of the WE difficult. That however is subjective. And when you mention batteries are you referring to batteries for recording the ride. If that is the case I know that most people only record certain sections thus save on their batteries. I on the otherhand use a power bank set-up for my GoPro 7 black and it has been flawless. I have never stopped to change a battery on any of the rides I have ever done.
I mean batteries as my energy :D. @@DonPotterMTB
Positivity is contagious. Spread it! 🌈
Sounds good.
One more suscriber from 🇫🇷. Very insane forest
Thanks
I like the idea for a series 👍. Would love to see an video on partridge.
Agreed
Thanks. I was talking to a guy on the weekend and he was saying that he really enjoys your videos. Also I hiked what I think was Namastase. I'm probably butchering the spelling. I have watched your videos for the trail. Being on it I now know how steep it is. Perhaps just a bit over my head. Good work.
This is such a great idea!
Thanks. I was out today trying to do another one at Hartland but I had a mishap with my GoPro. More to come in the future.
Really appreciate this video. Most people don't show burrow pass climb.
I'm glad you liked it. Prior to riding the WE last year I was trying to research each portion of it so I knew what I was getting myself into. The climb was definitely the portion that was not documented. I could only find one person that had a small portion on video. That's when I decided to buy a GoPro and document the entirety of the WE. It shows the entire trail for someone that is interested and it serves as a good memory for me to go back and watch. Thanks again.
I am your target audience 👍🏼 my wife and I just moved to Esquimalt 3 weeks ago from Kelowna and first time on the island so I am navigating Hartland and also riding at Jordie Lunn. Your videos are exactly what I need. Thank you sir
I'm glad you are enjoying the videos. The trails behind Thetis and at Partridge are also lots of fun.
@@DonPotterMTB I am hoping to get into those areas as well, I see people saying they are trickier to navigate so I need to make more friends or invest in proper navigational equipment like a garmin, I am very much over constantly stopping to check Trailforks on my phone, first world problems tho 🤷🏽♂️
Yes. Both Thetis and Partridge are a little tricky to navigate. Both are signed to a certain degree but there is nothing like local knowledge so you don't need to constantly refer to Trailforks.
If you ever need an explanation on how to access an area let me know and I will do my best to explain it. I am off to a Hartland now for a morning ride.
This trail is my Nemesis!!!! Good Stuff Don, you're videos are great!
Thanks. The trail is a bit more challenging when wet.
Thank you for sharing your rationale for these videos, because it sounds like your aim in making them addresses my hopes in searching for videos like yours. I ride a gravel bike and find that the blue trail classification is a bit broad, because some blues are very rideable for me and others involve mostly hiking. So I am very appreciative of the work that you are doing!
I'm glad that you're finding the videos helpful.
just some feedback for the comments in your video … when I first started riding a year ago, your videos were an incredible resource in understanding the trail networks and getting some insight into each trail. very much appreciated. I also think you’re being a bit humble rating yourself as intermediate, specifically with your climbing and endurance … you’re definitely a talented climber! thanks again!
Thanks for your comments. I'm glad you find the videos helpful.
🍀 'Promosm'
Sorry. I have no idea what that means.
Great ride Don, I rode it Sept 26, 2022 and the weather was just perfect. I also videoed the whole ride, but it looks like you had a wearable gimbal on your chesty, a much better point of view. It sounds like you were clipped in also. I rode with eggbeaters, the only way to go. Again, fantastic ride!!
Thanks for the comment. No Gimbal. To capture the rides I bought a used GorPro 7 Black. That was the first GroPro that offered internal stabilization. I was extremely happy with how the videos came out. The game changer for me was buying the GoPro chesty. Prior to the trip I had a generic chesty and the footage was quite bouncy. I will hopefully get back to Moab. I enjoyed my rides and the scenery was amazing.
i know this is unsanctioned, but any hint as to where it starts? does this run parallel to fun trail/free kisses? can always delete the comment after if you don’t want directions left up… would appreciate it!
The trail is unsanctioned but gets lots of riders so it's not a secret. It's relatively easy to get too. When riding on Southridge south from the intersection at Southridge and Painless you will cross the elevated wooden bridge. You will come to a trail on your right. This trail will be the bottom of Huge Ribbon. There used to be a sign but the CRD removed the wooden sign. If you ride up the trail maybe 30 or 40 yards you can turn left. This is the start of Ramped Up or Breathe. I have a video documenting the climb (ruclips.net/video/Y-ZU-BB0Njg/видео.html). There are no signs to make your way up the climb and there are some turns. So once you make your first left climb to the next intersection and go right. After turning right go about 20 or 30 yards and turn left. At the next trail intersection go right for another 30 yards or so and then go left. After that just follow the single track to the top of Ramped Up. If you watch the Ramped up video I attached I describe all the turns fairly clearly. Good luck and have fun.
is there somewhere to park around the bottom of Danger Trail to begin your climb there? Or do you need to park over at the Durrance Lake parking lot, make your way over the usual climb that takes you up north crossing road and then continue east to get over to the top of Danger Trail and Prosperity/Last Car on the Ferry?
Okay. First of all the trail that is identified as the blue internediate Danger Trail on Trailforks is not the same one that has been shown on the video. The Danger trail in the video is within the DND marked property and takes you up Cole Hill. Danger Trail in the video then goes down Cole Hill then intersects with North Crossing Road. I'm not sure I have ever been on what the the blue intermediate Danger trail. BC Parks has changed some of the trail names and is obviously reusing some of them. When I have gone down Last Car on the Ferry I have climbed back on the service road, North Crossing Road. So getting back to your question. I have never tried to park at the top of Durrance Rd. so I have no idea if there is designated parking. There are houses at the top of Durrance Rd so they may allow some parking or there could be no parking signs. Just to let you know it really isn't that far from the parking lot to the trails you are talking about. Having said that doing the single track climbing trail that runs up beside North Crossing Rd is not the easiest. It is a bit of a cardio challenge. Good luck and sorry for the long answers.
@@DonPotterMTB I’m used to taking the trail up north crossing road and west across Satellite/Alan’s ramble/Levitate etc to the summit … I’m basically looking to figure out how to get to “Guns and Roses” that i’ve heard referenced a few times in videos… you mentioned it in this one and I thought that meant it was at the top of the Danger Trail currently on trailforks (blue), didn’t realize the trail in this video isn’t the same one! It’s confusing with name changed etc with recent sanctioning process.
Just came across a GPS map that shows the original Danger Trail from your video … looks like it leads you up Cole Hill through DND property and then Guns and Roses runs down the summit of Cole Hill… I guess I assumed this DND area would be fenced off? Will have to explore.
If you want to get to Guns N Roses the easist approach would be to park in the Durrance lot and enter Partridge where I described before. That is still CRD so there are no signs. On Trailforks they are calling that Partridge connector. Instead of continuing straight up as I described previously take the second right turn and go east. There will be two forks. The first is for Durrance in Your Pants. That is a new exit trail that takes you down to the lake. At the second fork stay left and start climbing the old Danger trail (Its still on Trailforks as a dotted line). You will get to a lookout and the trail will turn left so go left on Danger Trail, Ride for 200, 300 metres or so (I don't know what the exact distance is) and you will see a trail that goes up towards a rock slab. Go up that rock slab and you will be at Guns N Roses. There should be a wooden sign indicating the trail. There is a pretty big rock roll at the start of Guns N Roses. There is a go around for the roll if you don't like the look of the roll. The trail will take you down and will eventually intersect into Prosperity and Last Car on the Ferry. Hopefully this explanation helps.
It's definitely not fenced off and you can access the trails. Unfortunately it's difficult to find some of the trails as the CRD area have no signs.
The gopro effect makes steeps look less than they are. If that is the case, the steeps on that trail are crazy because they look intimidating. Good ride!
Thanks
what’s the best place to park/start your climb to the summit?
Well. There is a parking lot for Durrance Lake. You can try and park there. It can be hard to get a spot in the lot as it's quite small and the lake is popular. The parking lot is accessed off of Willis Point Rd. Getting to the trails is relatively easy but there are no signs in the CRD part of the park. So if you park in the lot ride your bike down the service road beside the lake. About 3/4's down and after the beach there will be a climb to your left. Do the climb and then continue north. There will be a couple of turn offs. For simplicity go straight. You will eventually get into the BC Parks section of the park and the signs will start. BC Parks has just recently added the trail names to the posts so if you have Trailforks with you you should be okay. You can also start on Willis Point Rd across from "7" (Trail at Hartland) and take Testament, which is on Trailforks, to the east end of Durrance Lake. Upon arriving at the lake turn right and go to the service road and then left to the access climb described previously. Hopefully this helps. Good luck.
good night-that' good vlog~see ya,;)
Thanks.
