Come with me and spend some time seeing what I have been going through this year. 2024 has been one of my most busiest years in my life when it comes to life changing events. From the beginning when I started to prepare for living in China, selling our home, living in a camper, to retirement and beyond. Check out some Asian countryside with me after the life events settle down.
Chinese EV battery swap
Doing a battery swap on a NIO ES6 in Huizhou with a view from the outside. It took about 4 minutes. Love this convenience.

China apartments are affordable in most places and have great services and convenience. Being a foreigner and trying to buy an apartment without being here for some time might not be possible.

Just some tips on setting up a money system so you can live in China. ATM machines are easy if your card is accepted but you will pay a lot of fees if you are here long term. You can put all your investments into a money management account to make things a little more efficient.
Chinese Drivers License! 🪪

Maybe you have a different situation than I do but I’m here living in China with my Chinese wife. I had to wait 3 months after I got my temporary residency permit. This is actually a Temporary driver’s license for one year. No physical or driving tests. But you need a drivers license and a translation of it, proof of residency from the police department, photos, residency visa in your passport,...

Our China apartment renovation project.

From tearing down walls and all the flooring to shopping for everything to cabinet installation. It was a 2 month process but at a very reasonable cost. National Day sale prices along with government subsidies for appliances really helped us save a lot of money.

I made a video at one of these NIO stations about two years ago. At the time, I didn’t know that the car drives itself in.
Yeh. When you get into position in front of the station and touch the screen initiating the swap, it takes over the controls.
I’ve got another video from inside the car when doing the swap showing the touchscreen and the prompts.
At at least 1000 dollars per square foot for anything less than five years old in Shenzhen and Guangzhou....and don't forget the 20 percent down payment, who wouldn't want to buy.
@@johnmarlon6916 if you have bought an apartment, what is your situation and how long did it take to be able to buy? Were you here on a work visa or married to a citizen? Can you provide some information?
@@RobAnz2024 No, I didn't buy as I don't have an extra 200 k as a down payment. Furthermore, currently on a tourist visa it is impossible to buy. As you know, once over fifty and no Ph.D. it is nearly impossible to get a work visa based on the point system.
While I do own an apartment in Shenzhen, I also recommend renting. It’s so much cheaper. Owning is more for speculation, which can also be good. A subway station/line opened within a block from my apartment about a year ago. Greatly improving the value, but there also needs to be buyers. So far I’m not looking to sell, but this is a revolving circus.
thanks for the information
You are welcome. Hopefully it helps in some way!
I need a Chinese wife.
I’ve had a similar situation a few times. Canadian passports are written with last name first. There were a few times that I wrote my name in the correct order and ran into trouble. Of course in my small brain, I’m angry thinking it should be obvious that it’s the same person, but rules are rules. I suppose dealing with money or other important situations, it makes sense that they stick to the rules.
Yeh. It’s definitely a learning experience and hopefully this video will inspire others to ask questions about what you and I have went through at their banks when opening up an account. 👍
Wow, this is weird. I wrote the same comment and posted it and again, it seems to have disappeared. WTF RUclips?
@@86laowhy hmm. I tried to make a comment a few minutes ago on the License video and it gave me an error message
One of your messages was in another person’s comment thread
@@RobAnz2024 I don’t know what’s going on. I looked in all your comment threads and didn’t see my comment. I wrote it like at least 3 times. The first two time I did include a link which is perhaps why it was deleted. The third time, I didn’t put the link, but I still don’t see that one either. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t really matter. Apparently RUclips doesn’t want us to find each other?? I should disclose that I’m not gay. Haha. Bad attempt at a joke.
Cool. You’re in Shenzhen. I’m not there now, but that’s where I live. Maybe we’ll cross paths some time. Be careful driving. You probably already know that you need to get some of the road rage ideas out of your head. Other drivers may stop to check their GPS where they shouldn’t stop. I’ve been here going on 15 years. When I first arrived, not many people were driving, so many people are still learning. Please keep that in mind.
@@86laowhy yes I am a Shenzhen resident. Just moved here in September last year after retiring. Now spending my life with my wonderful wife and going to explore china. I’ve been coming here since 2012 when I met her. And yes, I left the road rage at home. I think everything will be groovy. lol. Let me know when you are back in town sometime and we can meet up somewhere.
Your reply about the EV center being Shenzhen is gone.
@@RobAnz2024 That’s weird right?
Yeh. I haven’t had that happen to me. But I do know that on eBay, you can’t share emails and information. They will delete it
I think I left you a comment, but I don’t see it. Did RUclips delete my comment??
Maybe post it again and see what happens. I don’t see another comment from you. 👍
@@RobAnz2024 can you please try going to “sort by - newest first”. On my channel, sometimes I can see comments that are hidden by doing that. But I will also try to remember what I said and send it again.
Congrats buddy! Hope all is well
@@gregburke3320 thanks Greg. All is going good even though I drive an EV🤣😉
@ good to hear. Like we have talked before, EV’s have their place and if that’s what works for you now then that’s great. I know the get up and go would be a lot of fun
@ the acceleration is definitely a fun experience. And the biggest thing is we can just swap batteries and be on our way in 5 minutes.
@@RobAnz2024 Shenzhen is like the EV center of the world.
@@86laowhyoh here it is. lol. Yeh, We have a NIO. Pretty cool car
I’m going to make a part 2 to this video and talk more about some topics and experiences. This video was kind of geared towards my family and friends who were a little worried about me making this big move to China. I’m sorry if some people feel like they were baited and then felt like the video wasn’t worth watching. I apologize for that. Please watch for the next video. It will be much more informative. Thanks for the kind comments.
Nice Apartment/ condo! China is very affordable. I understand the job thing, can relate even though I'm a little younger at 51. You get so accustomed to working and it's like u almost feel like somethings off if you are not working like a robot, subbed ya!
Thank you for the kind reply. I think I will get used to being off work and retired. Just gotta keep busy sometimes. Just got my drivers license and we have a new car so now I’m a little more free to explore.
What is the big "tube" looking thing behind you at the beginning of the video?
It’s a road. lol They do that a lot here. It’s open on the top but has high sides.
Congratulations to my husband. Now I don’t have to drive all the time 😅
This comment literally made me laugh out loud!!!
Happy retirement, Rob! I'm still years away, but I am looking forward to it. I hope to start out my new chapter by moving to a new environment like you when I do. Somewhere, it is affordable. Just curious: Will the US pay my social security if I live in China?
I have not began to collect SS yet but I have watched many tax advisors and expats videos that do collect SS. I don’t think it will be a problem. And thank you. So far it’s a happy retirement.
Your best bet is to deposit in a US bank and then transfer. The bigger issue is doing the 7162 form every year - don’t miss that
Thanks for the advice. I have everything deposited into my account ( Fidelity, Shwab, Vanguard) and then wire transfer to my overseas account. My CPA files everything for me.
@@RobAnz2024 I get dividends from a private stock that I've accumulated over the years but I also make income from Cryptos, plus my job. I'm wondering if they allow the income from digital currency in China and how I would go about using it for living off of in China if I decided to liquidate some of it to buy a place like you did. I'm from Hollywood Florida, US.
Well buying a place will be the most difficult unless you have a Chinese wife or some other way I am not aware of. Best way to do your banking is like I said in one of my previous comments. I use an investment company and opened a money management account. Everything is deposited into that and then I wire the money to my bank account here.
Glad your doing well ❤
Thank you Terri❤️
Rob, as you are finding out living in China , that the government provides , cares about the people that live in China. Senior citizens are respected, and benefits of joining many social groups are about. Search on the internet with the help from your neighbours are a Good start. If you are a religious practitioner then head to a church as many can guide you around for other social and hobby oriented activities. Free morning and evening exercises in the parks with all age groups are plenty. As you discover about your neighbours, community, City that the locals are pretty nice folks. Stay happy and hold love and unity , with a BIG SINCERE SMILE when meeting people, ROB. 😀👍
Thank you very much for your reply and sincerity. I appreciate that!
You should video the festival. Would love to see it.

@@normanwong6129 it is a cool place. I’ve never seen anything like this area. Definitely going back there again. Thanks for watching 😎
@iamjohngalt. Glad you enjoyed it. I will be returning in the near future and digging deeper into the parts shops and the older stereo shops. Glad to see a Carver Compadre viewing this. Thank you sir👍
Great video, Rob! Thanks! Amazing that you have to go to China to see small businesses doing well in electronics again. It looks a lot like what I saw in Bangkok ten years ago, but so much bigger in China!
I watched a video about bringing your pet to China and doing the paperwork yourself. My opinion is DONT!!! Have a USDA accredited Vet that has the ability to work with a USDA office because the certificate has to certified by the USDA. And also, we never contacted the US Embassy or anything like that.
After listening to my wife, I went to a Visa website and for US citizens, you can get a 10 year L visa with a 60 day limit on each length of stay.
Travel visas are changing every once in a while so keep an eye on it when you are ready to travel.
Hello Sharon. It’s been in the 90’s since we got here. My wife says it will cool down a little so we will see if and when that will happen. 😊

What I like about the EV's is that when you're on a hill you don't have to keep your foot on the brake cuz it won't roll no matter which way you're facing.
I will try that next time.
