How to make Ceramic Water Whistles, POV Pottery #44
Learn how to make a ceramic whistle that uses water to sound like a bird! This video builds on the the skills learned from the ocarina videos, if you have not made an ocarina before, that would be an easier/recommended starting place. You will need: clay, rolling pin, small dowel or bamboo skewer, needle tool, wire knife or x-acto knife, rubber rib or metal rib.

Cylinder Pinch Pot, POV Pottery #43
Просмотров 6 тыс.3 года назад
A deceptively technical project, this assignment calls for tactile awareness (wall and floor thickness), form control, and a sensitivity to clay timing/moisture. Keys to success 1. Start with around 1lbs soft moist hockey puck shaped clay. 2. After making a hole in the center w/ your thumb, bend your thumb into a hook and slowly twist the clay on your "hooked" thumb. Flex your thumb, don't hurt...

My three steps to success are: even wall and floor thickness, continual compression, and moisture management. To achieve even wall thickness, one has to choose to shift one's awareness to the tips of thei...

    I'd like some more instruction or specification on the mouthpiece. Mine aren't working. Does the thickness of the "grain of rice" matter? How much clay do you cut off of it to make it flat? How big is the hole after you cut the 45° angle? I've made several, & I just hear air.

    • @povpottery3648
      @povpottery3648 10 месяцев назад

      Sorry for the late reply I have been trying to think about the best way to respond. To answer your grain of rice question, it is tricky because I talk about rice two times in the video. Please go to 8:17 in the video. What I call the window is the opening/hole cut in the the tube, that opening should be about the width of cooked basmati rice (long grain) this is the first time I mention rice. The second time is when I am talking about the grain of rice sized piece of clay that is used to plug/close the whistle. That rice grain just needs to close off the tube before the drop. You can see the size of the piece I use at 9:00. Your question "how much clay do you cut off to make it flat?" I do not understand to make what flat? How big is the hole it is about the size of a rice grain but it depends a bit on the diameter of the dowel you used, bigger dowel means larger resonant chamber means larger window. Hope that helps! Good luck they are tricky!

    • @povpottery3648
      @povpottery3648 11 месяцев назад

      The best way is to poke holes that are comfortably placed and slowly widen their diameter listening to the note changes with a tuner or a cell phone with a tuner app. It takes a lot of patience and trial and error. I have had the best luck with making an English pendant style ocarina ( google it) which only has four holes but can play a full octave. Good luck hope that helps!
