Sometimes people get into psychology because they themselves have mental problems.

John Michael Greer wrote "Knowing many stories is wisdom. Knowing no stories is ignorance. Knowing one story is death." Consensus risks "death" (of thinking at least) when it suppresses or filters out contrary information. OTOH, Charlan says consistency of a minority position and conviction over time is what's compelling, unlike a devils advocate who may just say things they may not believe. I'd say this influence works by internalization, where we internally create a voice that represents another person we disagree with, and we have an internal debate with that person, but that only works if a person is predictable and "unreasonable" in a way you don't fully understand, so you can explore that. Maybe similar to “The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.” ― George Bernard Shaw
