What an absolute damn mess, this has to be the worst cover ever of a legendary classic song by Russell Morris. There is only one person who can sing this and you guessed it initials R.M. WTF were they thinking, butchered to pieces..... The audience must be deaf.
Although it is more than forty years ago!!Ireckon I was one of the lucky few pressed inthere in the crowd that night
Keys sounded like they were trying to stir the audience.
Big man tight this show!
Fantastic, incredibly respectful and honorable cover of the Russell Morris sixties classic.
I stayed up one Saturday night when I was young around this time and saw some band I'd never heard of before called Midnight Oil playing at some place called The Royal Antler on Lee Simon's Nightmoves. The gig was awesome. It could have been this. Nightmoves would have a live set from a band every week, many of them Australian. At least that's what I remember. That show never gets mentioned like Countdown does as being influential. I discovered Midnight Oil, The Radiators etc on Nightmoves.
I only saw the Oils once: NYE in Freo, '95 at the South Fremantle footy oval. A lot of their(our) message fueled the No Nukes, Enviro, Social Equity etc movements, as did the graffiti and mass protest. Quite the counterpoint to the cool breeze of corporate, military, environmental, political & imperialist hedonism, which is now a hot gust in our face.
I was at the Freo gig also, one of the many times I got to see them.
Best no reaction performance ever
14 going on 15 hitting the pubs with mates getting blind love them with a passion
Best live band ever.
Dosnt show anything
Awesome cover
does anyone know what the intro tune is? was it a rare song maybe?
I fricking love this song, and have since it came out. Still have this album on cassette from 1983 when I bought it. My favourite song of theirs, just stunning!!
Christ I’m fucked already
I wonder if they actually first played this cover back in the mid seventies when they were playing covers.
I remember wanda beach gig in 82 as a 17 year old now 56 pissing down rain I went crazy when they played brave faces my favourite song.
Wow❤
The best band ever to have come out of Australia
My old man had a mate who got this recording onto a CD for him when I was in my teens and I remember hearing this for the first time and already a big Oils fan, I was like 'fucking oath', and it still remains as one of my favourite listens today, outstanding.
It's 2022 and the Oils are nearing the end of their final tour - ever. They've written brilliant music over the years but for me, nothing beats the first two albums. I just wish they'd have played Powderworks as a norm on their gigs.
I agree, no disrespect to their pop efforts but holy shit these guys had something going in the early years. Their more punk/hard rock influences are my favorite.
Run by night was my favourite.
Maybe the best live performance ever captured by The Oils…incredible recording, flawless execution by the band, and ENERGY like only they could bring!!
Head Injuries was my favourite Oils album and I saw them many times at the Antler, great times
The Antler was my local pub in those days. Saw them so many times. First time was at the Stage Door before they had a record out. Blew me away. Fan forever.
Wow 42 years ago. I was there I still remember some of it, I feel privileged to have seen the oils through their career. Best live band ever
Yep, they were amazing, we'd be at the Antler every week and they never disappointed us .
In 1985, when I was a grommet hanging around Trigg Point (in my Triple J exploding head T-shirt), I would’ve given anything to be at one of these gigs.
Dis you catch em really early when they were house Band Tuesdays at Frenches on Oxford street? They were awesome there it was such a small venue!!~~
I was there that night. This was the opening number 🖐
I am so jealous! I would go to see them for this song alone, apart from all of the other great ones.
Best version ever!
Early oils
Yep before there songs became about politics
The best days.. Oils @antler 🖐
Awesome!! Thank you for putting this up. I first saw them at Selinas in 1980. We'd go nuts, covered in sweat then jump straight in the ocean fully dressed. Never forget when they played Echo Beach one night. Wish i could find a copy of that.

The oils will all ways be MIDNIGHT OIL and there music is timeless. Rock on
It has a unique 80’s sound it almost feels like it’s 1980 listening to it.
I seem them there and other legendary places like Cheques night club
I remember hanging off the rafters at that gig, sweat dripping off the ceiling and walls - I was still at school - I.D. checks weren't as they are now.
The antler was the oils pub👍. Big nights seeing the oils back in the day😉
ahhh Midnight Oil before they went soft
You go girl
Unfair
Great interview at about 2:00
The best days of my life Those gigs at the Antler were amazing. we were down at the Narrabeen Antler every week. No cover charge they were awesome.
Great job! I do prefer the original Russell Morris version.
Russel Morris psyche job is best
Thats so oils real!
Just as an aside, this is from a rebroadcast (as someone else has stated, the "Impossible Music Festival" for 2JJ's 30th anniversary in 2005), and is not the full show. The original broadcast was live to air (on AM, so in mono), and unfortunately cut out midway through Don't Wanna Be The One due to a technical issue...
So true Bill. Remember taping this gig at home on a TDK90 cassette & the live cross dropping out during the encore.
Gold mate - cheers
Was the original bassist still around for this gig?
1980 I was 10 .. I would have to wait another 2yrs til my introduction to "The Oils" .. Living 3 hours from Melb, a visit to my best friends house had him drag me out to his older sister boyfriends Kingswood .. He was from Melb, and his wagon had mags, lowered and loud sound system installed. "Got this new album we've been play'n" as he pushed the cassette inside the slot, "have a listen to this" .. 10, 9, 8 .. 2, 1 wasn't a countdown, it was an epiphany. Thanks for posting, great quality . .
great production quality. anyone see a gig at the tarmac?
