Competing sounds more ego than skill and experience. Looking at your skills, you were far from ready for a competition, especially your cardio. Without cardio and skills, your brain isn't learning anything you don't already know - you're seeing your mistakes from being fatigued. Hopefully people thinking of competition dedicate more time to cardio and skill.

Just came across this! My 10 year old has been rolling a couple months and just picked up his first stripe. He got me into taking classes and on my 2nd class they put me in a round robin for 20 mins at the end of the class 😂 the objective was to pass or sweep closed guard and take side control. I did ok considering I had no idea what I was doing, and somehow stayed on for 3 rounds against much younger guys (I’m 49 😂). After the 3rd round I was gassed so hard I had to give up my spot because I couldn’t continue! Totally feel that embarrassment you describe…was mortifying! Tell me it gets better bro?! 😂😂 great video 👌

Man, I can't believe you had those first THREE comp rounds back to back. That is terrible luck. I had about an hour in between first and second, and I swear I needed so much time to get my HR down. My left tricep was going into spasm. It was like I was going into shock. You're a hero for stepping into that third round.. I can't even imagine. The burn is real. There's no real preparation for the intensity of competition. Pressure and adrenaline.. thanks for posting, I appreciate the honesty.

39 year old 165# 2 strip white belt here. 40 in may. Started bjj last August , I injured a rib about a month in to my training where I did an awkward half cartwheel guard pass attempt (forgot my age for a minute there) and landed on my team mates knee. That knocked me out for almost 3 weeks. Everything hurt , hurt to pull, push , breath. Never got it checked out but it was painful. Made a full recovery there. Love your videos bud. Congrats on the blue belt by the way .

one other suggestion: when rolling with elijah, if he favors putting himself into top half, then check out the choi bar setup. it's a slick way to get a strong clamp on the nearside arm (the one that's trying to crossface you) while simultaneously using a strong knee shield. it kills his chance to kimura you like he has been, and now allows you to attack. i personally switch back and forth from threatening the choi bar to scooping that nearside leg to enter into leglocks. both the choi bar and the leg lock entry use a bit of inversion, but nothing too crazy. i used to hate getting stuck in bottom half with guys like elijah, but now i am the one purposely putting myself there, and my opponents usually dont know how to deal with it. choi bars (or even just entering the legs) are hard to stop if done correctly. oss

i didnt rewatch the vid but the purple passed pretty effortlessly at least twice, and on the first one you mentioned a sao paulo pass, did he do it on the 2nd one also? either way, there are tons of youtube vids on how to counter, or at the very least defend, every pass imaginable. just me .02 and is a good way to shore up your defense if it's getting past your guard consistently.

  • @adameckhoff7970

Hi - Purple Belt here. at 5:32 when you pull guard, have you ever considered going right into New Jersey utilizing the Rubber Guard. I mean, you swing your leg over that arm you have omaplata, gogoplata set ups, along with meathook variations, gogoclinch and hindilutines. you can also hit my favorite move, the Carni where you swing that leg over his arm (kinda of like an omaplata) but then you straighten out ur opposite butterfly hook (which stops him from rolling forwards). Great content otherwise, keep it up.

Yo Adam thanks for the feed back! Ill be honest i gotta look up most of what you just said lol! I do need to play more instead of getting in my comfort zone, that is closed guard. I need to take a few weeks and just not focus on triangles haha. Thanks in advance will check out those options

@joecrow13 Just because its not common in ADCC doesn't mean you should not consider 10th planet JJ. Also, not everyone is training for ADCC, some people, including myself, just do this as a hobby.
