Some of the best explanations about the Pantheon I've seen on RUclips. Question though. The theory about the oculus distributing the compressive forces and making them spin around the circle, is that a well established theory? Or could it be that the concrete is so strong, that it's irrelevant if there's a hole in it or not? Kind of like if we make a hole in the top of an egg shell, the shell "dome" won't collapse. It doesn't matter to the egg if there's a hole in it or not. Which do you think is the more likely explanation?
The compression ring is well established structural theory and used on a lot of domes - Nervi's Palazzetto della Sport: acx #52 , the Astrodome: acx #79, etc. To say the concrete is "so strong" is to say, it has great compressive strength and poor tensile strength - which is why the compression ring analysis works. Thanks for asking and watching!
@@architecturecodex9818 I watched both #52 and #79. But what I'm trying to understand is how a compression ring works. Does it really divert the forces in a circular direction, as if spinning around the ring? I'm actually making a video about the Pantheon's oculus and I want to make sure I myself understand it fully. Any chance I could email you?
@@JordanAmit The simple answer is it must since we see the hole in the Pantheon. Perhaps it might help if I note that concrete, like any material, has a sort of internal friction, a cohesion, that makes it act monolithically (as one stone.) In balance, there would be no failures - but out of balance the internal stresses would cause cracks. We see them all the time. So, imagine a 6" section of the concrete pushing inward to the oculus hole and the two adjoining 6" sections having enough internal friction, to hold it back. Spread that through the ring in 360 degrees and you have your balance. Does this help?
@@architecturecodex9818 Is it useful to think of it as 2 horizontal arches with their "feet" against the other arch's feet? But these arches are present in all degrees of the circle. No matter how we look at it, there are always 2 arches butting against each other and holding the compression of the dome squeezing them together, inward? As if the double arch is preventing the dome from collapsing inward?
@@JordanAmit I can keep trying to type something but this is RUclips and so someone has done a video about it. Maybe this would help. ruclips.net/video/nJ-toVf33dk/видео.html
Let me know when you are famous
Haha... not there yet!
When we received Johnson & Burgee’s drawings for the IDS Center, it was clear they had no idea how an elevator cab was put together. Had we tried to make it their way, each cab would cost three times what it eventually did. We sent them working drawings showing the correct construction to make it look like what their drawing implied. Architects need other experts to create a masterpiece.
Architecture is definitely a collaborative endeavor and as projects get bigger the more collaboration. I like practicing small since it allows me to be the architect and not the manager of an architecture firm... and the software (Revit) is that good these days. Plus, I like doing my own engineering as much as possible. Makes taking all those calculus courses seem worthwhile after all. For firms like Johnson & Burgee, it is likely someone with little practical experience was assigned the elevators allowing them to be schooled by you. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Bonus cameo with the American Radiator Building, nice
@JuniorExecutive1987 thanks for watching and commenting
Hi Michael, I have enjoyed a number of your videos - I really like how you combine an interest in modernist styles with an awareness and appreciation of vernacular styles and classical proportions. I had no idea you are also such a talented architect. Villa Lane(?) looks excellent and Villa Seacor is a masterpiece. It's rare to find an architect who can work expertly in a variety of modernist and non-modernist styles (in Britain we had the very talented Oliver Hill, but I can think of no others), and yet you have achieved it. Bravo, and I would love to see more of your own projects. Thanks very much for sharing this, it deserves to be known.
@simoncattle1434 Thank you very much. I like all GOOD architecture regardless of style and I have fun working in all of them. Go to my office website (which currently is also ACXs website ) www.molinelliarchitects.com. And thanks for watching and commenting.
This home is a jewel box, OMG! You must howl with righteous laughter (or burn with indignation, maybe they're the same thing?) when you observe the absolute JUNK that gets thrown up in the Hamptons or all over California -- perhaps you will get the commission your brilliance deserves now that so many of those celebrity atrocities near LA have been burned from the planet forever? Please, do share more of your materworks, Mike, your creations truly are marvellous! LOVE your channel so much!
Thank you.
Hi Michael, this house is a masterpiece for sure. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you.
Must've been a totally different expirience visiting McDonald's before the 70s, also the vibes are descending with every new remodelling (atleast here in Europe)
You expected to eat in your car, and we did. It was definitely, a fun family outing when we were kids. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I am excited to see this channel grow. Hoping that a review of One Liberty Place will be recorded someday.
Possibly. Good idea!
good overall take. at least its fair. there is the postitive and negative side of things. getting tired of seeing biased political videos in RUclips.
Thanks. The media is too quick to dub people heroes or villains. It is an infantile view of the world and unfortunately too common.
@@architecturecodex9818 amen to that. sad to know alot of people are still influenced to that they are not even aware of it... thats why personally i dont think democracy is good in elections. but thats just me...
@@seanimal_555 It is why we are Republic, and each sovereign state keeps certain rights. It is also why the electoral college was a genius construct to maintain the balance of power. But that's another discussion for another kind of channel.😄
@ oh damn i just knew about it now thanks for sharing the info. Researched about it. I wish it works somewhat similar here. In our country , its just directly counted by the number of people who voted for a candidate. You can imagine how this can go wrong ..
This video was tough to listen to.
@donaldgoerig6171 I was trying to imitate the Critical Drinker, so I apologize. But that's how I felt during the movie!
THANK YOU! Ugh, this movie was boring. I still don't know what I was supposed to make of this, so, again, bless you for validating my reaction! BTW, we agree on The Piano, bleah, but disagree on The Cook, The Thief, et al, which remains a very powerful, sensual/emotional experience for me, but, hey...that's me, lol....
2 out of 3 ain't bad. If I want some Helen Mirren, there are other movies.
nice of you to share family moments on a trip. wish we could do that as well in the US. and were from asia.
So much to see on your side of the world. I have not even begun. We have to face it that we will never see everything, but we can have fun trying. Thanks for watching and commenting.
nice end statement .. cheers!
Moar great work as always, thanks again! And another question: Do you think Frank Gehry honors or insults Gaudi's legacy? The Bilbao could sort of be considered something Gaudi himself might have designed if he were alive today, maybe? Looking forward to your thoughts?
An interesting point I had not considered. I like the Guggenheim Bilboa, but I do get critical of Gehry for always doing the same thing. Yet, I have not made that criticism of Gaudi. Both were starchitects and had an expensive iconic personal style that they used on EVERY project. Both styles are curvy and organic. Perhaps I need to think about this more. Thank you.

Ive always felt that being a Catholic is like being part of an architectural society. Only those who are extremely cynical could think that churches sole purpose are as signifiers of power. You said it all perfectly, lets hope that these structures last for thousands more years so that anyone with curiosity may wander and appreciate. Art and architecture are emblematic of all that is good in humanity.
Michelle Shocked has a song called "God is a Real Estate Broker" which is funny if, as you said, you are not extremely cynical. I find those with no faith cannot fathom sincere religious beliefs but still expect us to be perfect. And then as we deal with temporal realities, they miss the more pious goals. Thanks for watching and commenting.
This is excellent stuff. Im an architect and I hardly have time to scratch my butt, here you are doling out excellent content in your spare time! Super!!
Great to hear from a colleague. This has more or less become my hobby - in addition to physical things to stay healthy. But I would rather work on the videos than play golf. (I shoot in the low 120s.) Plus these visits are opportunistic - if I am going someplace, I try to find a building I want to see - if the trip is not already a purposeful pilgrimage to see a building. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Perhaps because I was born in 1980 I love modernism, steel, glass and cold industrial brutalism sometimes, and I always found the ATT building to be quaint or blockish and strange. It reminds me of a wardrobe. But since I am not an artist trying to say something about the state of things, it will obviously be lost on me.
As noted, I love all forms of architecture (except Rococo.) So, I have room in my heart and great appreciation of the AT&T and Lever House and the Chrysler Building and 432 Park and 220 Central Park South and WTC-1 and...
Great video Would love to hear these recorded with a lav mic though
HAHA mic issues, I know. The area one seemed to work best. The faithful lavalier crapped out 4 videos ago and the replacement ones I got sound worse or no sound at all!
Can you recommend one that works with a conventional video camera? The last two I ordered were awful. Not sure why it is so difficult to find one.
@@architecturecodex9818if you’re able to check that your camera is compatible with the DJi mics, I’d recommend them
While Johnson holds a prominent place in architecture I have a distaste for close to half of his work. Johnson lapses into gimmickry often, of which one of the most atrocious examples is the residential tower across from NYC's Metropolitan Museum. That tower above the main shaft of the building gets a billboard-shaped mass that resembles a sloping wall of ancient Egypt (total pastiche). Likewise the PPG Headquarters in Pittsburgh using with no finesse reflective glass to establish a modern equivalent of a Gothic office building. That said I do like Pennzoil Place in Houston and the now non-existent Four Seasons Restaurant in the Seagram Building. Also on a more personal note going into an interview for an internship (1983) with the Manhattan Planning Office I requested to see the plans Johnson drew up the Times Square Re-do, prior to public release. All I can say is yuck. And thank GOD his plan was not adopted as it would have KILLED the visual dynamism of the Times Square/42nd St constellation. Thanks for the video.
A friend of mine worked at Johnson Burgee and he had great respect for both of them. But I tend to agree with you that Johnson was trying to play with the big boys by leveraging publicity often with gimmicks. He might have been a good architect regardless. Thanks for watching and commenting.
lol keep up the jokes love em
thanks for watching... sometimes I joke around, sometimes I get profound... it depends
Love the personal love story with the building! And those oculus photos!!!
It's what we do! 😄
I respect modern aspirations, etc., but if it looks good, it probably is good. I am on Team Stern.
As noted I like it for the same reasons I like the more modern 432 Park and WTC-1. Well-conceived and well-executed architecture is great regardless of style.
Great video. Fascinating and heartfelt, thank you!!
I will challenge you to try the three things I like and three things I don't like approach used by realtor Arvid Hadid. It would spice things up, but also ruffle some feathers, so you might not be inclined.😊😊❤
That group photo of shadows from the dome’s top is pretty special
Yes. That one photo summarizes our year.
lol nice intro
Its also inspired from post modernist/post structuralist/ de constructivist mode of thinking originating from linguistics. The rest of the industry were affected by these way of thinking..
Possibly - but I am sticking with my grunge theory. 😀
I’m an architecture student who is about to graduate a university in Korea. Your channel constantly motivated me to pursue this career during school. Thank you for your videos!
Wow! That is the best thing I could hear! Good luck!
Impressive video, Architecture Codex. Looking forward to seeing your next upload. I smashed that thumbs up button on your content. Keep up the fantastic work. The architectural details regarding the bronze grills are fascinating! How do you think the design influences visitor interaction with the space, especially in terms of emotional response?
Thank you for your message! I think the unusual nature of the exterior grille intrigues and impresses people. This prepares them emotionally, perhaps, for the experience inside.
this is what a college student would design once they know how to do that shape in rhino
Check out ACX #83 for the full video!
It annoys me to know these famous and award winning architects couldn't come up with a better inspiration for their buildings. I mean taking shapes literally from surroundings is one of the most basic concepts u can come up with. It was what we used to do way back in college.... And yet these guys push through with these design. Also reminds me of eisenman's design for a colosseum which was inspired from a cactus 🤦♂️
As I note the video, even if the design process led you to this, at some point you say, "No." And the people who approved it, could have told him no. But were they too afraid of rejecting the design because Nouvel is famous and was that's Nouvel joke all along? FYI If you haven't seen ACX #62, take a look. It is about Eisenman and Cardinal's Stadium.
Easily one of the most criminally underrated channels on RUclips. May I humbly submit the Forestiere Underground Gardens in Fresno for your immediate consideration...
Thank you. Would that the RUclips algorithm feel the same. I am unfamiliar with this project and currently back home on the east coast, but I will consider it.
@patrickgomes2213 That is to say, the Diocese of Orange didn't add it. It was there when they re-designed the interior or Christ Cathedral. There is a small chapel at the base of the spire. @architecturecodex9818 @patrickgomes2213 thanks... I did not notice when it was added... I saw it only as part of the change over... but I am seeing now it was done about 1990 ... I will need to edit this video substantially!
@lexlightning Love your content. Please invest in a nice microphone to up the quality of the viewing experience. Gracias. @architecturecodex9818 @lexlightning Sorry, you are right. My normal mic failed, and I had to retape everything with a backup.
@TheCaffeinatedOrganist Great job with this. All the “catholic stuff” was especially well done. I believe I read the “blinking irises” (motorized shades) cost $1mil… kinda shocking I do know they replaced the organ also. Not sure if that was a success either. It’s not a music program I admire… Rather underachieving. I think it’s the idea of a space that large attempting to do all that at once. Kind of impossible I think. Thanks for your insights.
@evermar1 As a Roman Catholic and Architect myself, I enjoyed this video very much. I have followed and experienced this building over the years. Great job. 2 hours ago
Thanks and thanks for watching! I appreciate that architects (and Catholics) like my videos as much as some non-architects.
Unfortunately, since I had to edit the video first loaded - which meant deleting it, and loading up the new one, I lost the original 200 views and original comments. I will put some of those comments in the comments section, including the one who caught my error!
Another fave building of mine. Thank you
Great tastes abounds!
My top 5 fave building in the world.
Again. I cannot thank you enough for using modern and contemporary distinctly. O
You have good taste! My videos got better, so I hope you enjoy others!
I think your Architectural analysis and criticism is very insightful and the buildings and landmarks you've chosen to look at are fundamentally important. You should think about getting a new background, though. Frugality has its place but that crumpled red drape does not rise to the level of ambiance you and your videos invoke.
I noticed a crease... may have to do something... I wanted to avoid the cliche' bookshelf.
Wow, a modernist condo tower that is elegant and liveable in Manhattan! Wonderful building, thanks for sharing!
Thanks. Hope it was worth the wait!
A true joy to watch! Very well done!
THANK YOU

I was only 11 years old when Munich hosted the Olympics, the year I became an Olympics fanatic. The architecture of the Olympic Stadium was impressive back then. It was my first destination when I visited the city in 1987.
I had the same experience!
I'm a native to the Bay Area, and I love the Transamerica Pyramid. It's always been one of my favorite structures.
Did you grow up with it? That might have a lot to do with it. It is an admirable building, but it was a change.
@@architecturecodex9818 I did, yes. It was built just a few years before I was born. But I should also point out that my maternal grandmother's family dates back to the area before California was even a state. Most were kind of indifferent to it, didn't love it or hate it. But the ones that paid any attention to it actually loved it. And I say 'loved' in the past tense since most of those relatives of mine, with exception of one aunt, are no longer with us.
