Great tips for getting Mays music approach…but fingering and hand position is, well, awful
Could any slash chord work as a passing chord as long as the A remains in the bass?
Wonderful voicings 😊
I think Chopin is first composer to directly use diminished scale in his etude op.10 no 9 i think, tell me if i was wrong😅
Useful insight for me, thanks!
Great distinction.
Thank you!!
Always nice to eavesdrop on a conversation between Chopin and Mozart.
Wow, I’ve heard similar arrangements so many times in early seasons of the X-Files! Interesting
Sorry, I'm always so slow on music theory - so doing negative is about mirroring the half step and whole step movement? That's how it works, that's what you're doing?
I’ve heard this, but it didn’t sink in because it was presented from the theoretical perspective around which scale the altered scale comes from. That is more of a structural mental concept, but this way of explaining is about the sounds of the notes themselves and now I get it thoroughly and no doubt I’ll remember this going forward. Thanks!!!
I’m glad to hear that Daniel! Thank you!!
Thanks 👍
You’re very welcome!!
Dominant 7#9... The Jimi Hendrix chord is in the house! (Although he included the 5.)
The altred scale comes from melodic 7th degree, thats why its probably suits best for minor.Thank for the video❤
Thank you! 🙏
I think it is good to modulate to Eb major when being in E altered scale, I like this scale because there are 6 flats and also I like the 6th degree of melodic minor which has also feel of dim scale as when played in key of C scale C D Eb F Gb Ab Bb C First four notes are from C min Last three notes are from Gb maj So it forms connection between tritone minor and major wow!🎉
Very cool
Thanks so much 🙏
Couldnt it be a Ab instead of A? 🤔
Cc school boy q
That last D chord lands so perfectly. What a satisfying sequence.
Thank you 😊
Yah but why do those passing chords work? Need some explanation behind them instead of just the options
The ending made me sing LEAVE YOUR ANSWERS IN THE COMMENTS BELOOOOOW
DOPE✨️💾🎹
❤ more of arpeggios lessons will help
What keyboard are you using in this video?
Reminded me of the beginning of Last emperor's main theme by Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Yes, I know what you’re saying!
Arpeggiate....I learned a new word today.
I can't believe I've been playing for years, and it never once occurred to me to just omit the 1. I always just assumed other pianists were much better at their pedaling/ playing than me to not have the dissonance
The interlude in Live To Tell comes to mind when I hear this
That's beautiful, I love it, please 🙏 do more like this one 💛
Glad you liked it!, there will be more videos going in this direction!

Another is to simply stick with the Bb chord in the right hand and play an A in the left. That particular passing chord is wonderfully unstable but you are just changing a single note and exploiting a minor 9th between the bass and the tonic of the Bb chord.
what's the first song?
Thank you!

😮
You didn’t show us how to do this outside of this one example. You didn’t tell us why this works or when to use it.
modal interchange basically?
That A7#9 just hits beautifully
Beautiful, but just slightly confused about the third chord. For me it seems more like sum kind of a sus chord, or Db/Gb
Здравствуйте, почему вы зоветесь доктором-парнем-школьником?..
Is this you are the best thing by ray lamontagne?
Such an otherworldly and beautiful piece of music. ❤
I don't know anything about reading music, but I know what sounds I am attracted to. Thank you for breaking these chords into something I can understand, so the next time I listen to one of my favorite songs, by one of my favorite artists with Lyle Mays, I can appreciate the way he played these haunting, beautiful chords. It's like I've learned a new language, and you've taught me the nouns, verbs and adjectives. Now subscribed.
0:15 Oh no, oh no, oh no no no no no
Having given up trying to play guitar like Pat Metheny, I find myself wondering if I could play piano like Lyle
Nice explanation thank you! Can I ask: I train myself to play V7 from different starting points, I only add the 5b then to these? - 1 whole tone, 2 whole tones: CD F# - playing full cadencas and point out the V7 movement in all inversions from the tonic (CEG > H FG) - sus2b5 / sus4#1 - GBD - add F, lower D a half step - EGB > FGB (half step e up)
This all went over my head. I don't know why the algorithm showed this to me.
It’s telling you to get good
