Helping swallows find food in the cold weather
It looks like vandalism, but it isn't! In a couple of days, the temperature dropped from 30 celsius to 9 celsius, leaving the swallows not being able to migrate as they should, and without any food, since they only eat flying insects, and insects don't really fly below 15 celsius. The swallows were barely able to fly due to energy loss. As I went around the lake hitting the bushes, lot of insects came out of hiding, the swallows noticed them, and they were flying around me, eating a lot of them. They were following me for 2 hours like this. Fortunately, a lot of people did the same around the country.

      It is the same as with the R7: Quick, capable, but that focus pulsing from close range is pretty bad. Obviously the sigma can't really keep up with the newer Canon algorythm.

      Yeah, they were terrible times. Same here in Hungary. I was fortunate not to witness any of that with my own eyes, on the lake nearby we had less then 100 swallows, we were hitting the bushes for 3-4 hours per day in the rain, and at least to our knowledge, everyone survived. But that's not a big number, there were place were thousands gathered and lot of them fell... :( It will take 1-2 years to regain their numbers, that's for sure. And authorities even made things worse, they started to punish people for taking them home or to official animal shelters, since there is a rule that says noone can take any animals (above a certain danger levels, I can't tell you in english). It was a disgrace. But other than thet, lots and lots of people put together everything they had, it was beautiful. Obviously still not enough, but the mindset was to save as many as they could, every single life matters. Unfortunately, I could only help this 50-100 ones, but there were shelters saving thousands at the bigger lakes like Balaton. Lot of swallows migrated way before the cold struck, fortunetly, most of the adult birds were gone, at least in my county.

    WOW I would love that. For how long did you sit there before they started to come and eat ?

    • @birdingisgood
      @birdingisgood 4 месяца назад

      I have several different tactics for that, this is the most complicated. :) I guess you live in north of Europe, so the species must be similar. 1.: Chickadees. If you sit there after a week of feeding in the same place, covering your face, they will com in your hand in 15-20 minutes, quicker, if it is really cold. All this works below 10 celsius, at least at my area. Blue tit is the easy target there. 2.: Long-tailed tits. They are a category on their own, if its cold, you can just walk around, put their voice on loop on your phone, no previous feeding needed, if you hear them just play their voice, put a suet/fat ball in your hand, cover your face a little with a baseball hat or something, and they will come, no questions asked. Not always, but almost always works. 3.: The woodpeckers, and some others. This was my idea, but probably lot of people does that. It is a sneaky one. Woodpeckers are extremely careful, if I handfeed blue tits with the usual way, the wont even come close. But they are... how to put this... well... not very smart. So I took a big brown fabric to my place, and left it there. I put some wood under it, about the size of my body. I put beside it a printing of my hand (printed on a cloth, so it wont dissolve in the rain, etc). And I started to feed them there. After 3-4 days, I think, I layed under the fabric, put out my hand, put the food in it instead of the printing, and it worked. They learned, that its safe, and although my hand was a bit different, they didnt care. The woodpeckers came right away, with no suspicion whatsoever, even if they saw my lay under it. They forgot it in 1 minute. They cant think in big pictures like other birds can. :) But chickadees came in bundles as well. They know I'm there, they arent that... simple as the woodpeckers, they just didnt care as much, and I took out some triggers, like my face, bodyshape, etc, so they didnt feel the need to flee. This last way works really quick, woodpeckers usually came in 1-10 minutes. Even in 13-15 celsius.

    • @birdingisgood
      @birdingisgood 4 месяца назад

      For sure, I think in november, you have some chances or in Denmarkk, maybe in October as well. The colder, the better, temperature really has to drop under 10 celcius, best that the temperature drops below zero at least in the nights. (Also, it's forbidden to feed birds until september-october in my country, since the young ones cannot digest the seeds, and could starve to death.)

In my experience, you have much better chance to catch them in more open fields, even more so in agricultural parcels (when the corn/wheat/others are not too tall yet), possibly near your city/village, just after the last houses, the last 1-2 hours before dark in the evening :).
