The Tablelands | Atherton's Gems and Waterfalls
In this episode, we get Benny back up and running and continue our exploration of The Tablelands in far Northern Queensland. Our next stop was Atherton, where we visited the Crystal Caves, a highly recommended attraction that did not disappoint! René Boissevain has spent a lifetime traveling to every corner of the world, collecting natural crystals and prehistoric fossils. He then created this ‘display,’ essentially a man-made cave filled with countless fascinating geological artifacts. This was exactly our kind of tourist attraction, and we had an amazing day. The kids even got some fantastic homeschooling experiences along the way!

      It'll give you some quiet time - the comments off I mean. I don't suppose you're still drinking leftover mango wine 🙂 Another great look at things to do and see in the area, and that campground looks awesome. We'll put it in our little black book of spots to stay if ever in that part of the country. Geology is always a fantastic way to learn and it so happens the nautilus shell (fossilised or not) is a great maths lesson too. The nautilus shell is at the heart of a debate about the origin of mathematics; is it something already existing humans discovered in the world around us, or is it a language humans have developed to help understand the world around us? Turns out the ratio of chamber growth size of adjacent 180 degree opposed chambers of the nautilus shell is a Fibonacci sequence. As an engineer I always geek out about the mathematics of the nautilus shell. Fibonacci sequences are found everywhere in some of the most common things we see in nature - the number of petals on flowers and sunflower seed patterns to name just a couple more. Another 'randomly useful in an alternate universe bit of info' for you - for that day you come up against an angry mathematician, for instance 😂 Looking forward to the next instalment. Safe travels folks.

    Personally, we would have reversed the mango wine - grocery shopping order. We hate grocery shopping with a passion so being able to celebrate an ordeal well survived with some mango wine sounds ideal 😂 One of our favourite spots to stop and indulge our love of chocolate is the Junee Chocolate Factory - $100 spent there is a super easy thing to do. It might be we somewhat exceed our record if ever we visit Mareeba 😳 Gee, you were really thorough when de-Cape-Yorking the car. Took those studs and nuts right off! In all seriousness though, do check the wheel bore to hub lateral play on any wheels you don't replace. Over the years I've seen many stud failures resulting from the wheel 'walking around' on the hub. Our conditions - lots of corrugations and dust that gets between the wheel bore and hub - can oval or open up the wheel bore to the point the wheel is being located by the studs rather than being hub-centric, and the studs are then carrying the axle-loading of the vehicle as well as drive and braking torque, and clamping forces. Corrugations will make short work of studs that are carrying axle loadings on axles designed for hub-centric location. It's good practice to check wheel bore and hub diameters at each major service when using vehicles for heavy towing 👍 Looking forward to the next episode 🙂 Off to F&C night for us!

      @contributor7219 haha, ok, I'm not going to lie. There might have been a few drinks consumed that evening around the fire to celebrate the unplanned 3 wheel conversion. We got the rear axles and suspension thouraly looked over by a good mechanic in town once everything was fixed, and we are confident there is no long-term damage. That being said, we finally start tracking south next week, so we will plan to book the car in with my vic mechanic back in Melbourne for a complete check over! Still, we were very lucky not to have damaged the hub! Enjoy fish and chips night! 🍻🍻

    Firstly, congratulations on welcoming your newest family member into the world. Finally some gender balance for poor Tania! 🙂 You've probably already looked it up, but just in case: USAAF is actually United States Army Air Force. During WW2 the US Air Force was not its own arm, but a branch of the US Army. A friend of flew F-15 Strike Eagles for many years and she once gave me a full rundown on the history of the USAF and the (now defunct) Strategic Air Command, and the politics behind the USAF not existing during WW2. It's certainly hard to imagine such young people going to war. My father trained as a pilot during WW2, but thankfully missed out by a few days on shipping out to the UK to join crews flying Lancasters over Germany. He's very much the reason for my own career choices, after he passed away and my focus on music had to change to something more 'practical' by way of engineering. I've still got his 'wings' and a number of RAAF magazines from his time in our own Air Force. I've also got some 'naughty' stories from his training days of crosswind landings in Avro Ansons 🙄 We won't be taking our Canter down gunshot 😱 It just doesn't bear thinking about! Another great video. Off to have our fish and chip night for now 👍 Looking forward to the next instalment.

    • @VetinaVan
      @VetinaVan 25 дней назад

      Hi, It depends how far in that the seed is and the temperament of the dog. Dogs ear canals are very deep, and there's the possibility that there are multiple seeds in the ear. If the seed has been in there a while then it can get quite sore and potentially damage the ear drum. If it's straight forward and the dog is compliant then it could be done with the dog awake or just under sedation, but the vet who has assessed the individual situation could let you know. I'd at least want to look in the ear with an otoscope if the dog seems irritated to check for more seeds or trauma to the ear.

    When I originally saw the 'shots fired at an Aussie icon' I thought you were speaking metaphorically about some clever commentary poking fun at one of our local legends. Sadly, no, actual shots fired at a sign. Were they trying to prove they could hit the broad side of a barn at point blank range? If so, bravo 🙄 Glad to hear they've been caught and will be prosecuted. Another fantastic video in the series guys. The best look we've seen at how a trip to the tip can be when doing it in a nice relaxed way. Love the burgers by the beach - we're off to get fish and chips and sit in the car by the beach to eat our Friday night 'catch'. It's not The Cape, but hey 🤷🏼‍♀

    Great camp ground especially in the months you travelled there . Was busy when we stayed at Alou Campground in 2017 but loved the position near the beach . In 2017 it cost us $100 for just a vehicle return but worth it as you said .

      @fleurneumann8430 yup totally worth it. Alau is pretty nice, I think there was only 4 other campers when we were there! Bet it's busy now though! 😀😀

    It is expensive to ferry across until you realise this cost also covers camping permits in council approved areas. We stayed 2 weeks at Alau...absolute heaven 🙌 hope your Cape York trip met your expectations..😊

      @anjehouse9507 yup, the ferry is well worth it! The Cape was great, Punsand is also amazing! Was good to be up there while it was still pretty quiet, the weather never really came good but you can't have everything! 👍🍻

    Your videos continue to be a fantastic take on doing The Cape - much more our laid back style of doing things. The Alau Beach Campground looks absolutely stunning, and based on your comments I think somewhere we'd want to spend a few days. The contrast between rainforest and the open sea is definitely marked! Given the investment in a 'trip to the tip' I don't think too many would complain about the ferry cost when considered against the total. The more we see of your take on things the more I think we need to add it to our trip list. Watched the tight tracks last week with interest as our little truck would struggle to fit through some of those spots without tree pruning (or a caravan to clear a branch or two🙂). Given your current truck (bus) build and our other comments I realised this might be of interest. We helped out an auto journo friend with a video a while back - ours is the 'baby' of the two Canters. Wifey took some drone footage too. ruclips.net/video/xWRfPuCgxhg/видео.html Looking forward to the next instalment. Hope all is going well!

      @contributor7219 what an awesome little truck! The new bus has front, rear, and centre lockers, so hopefully, this gives optimum flexibility, especially with 24 gear ratios! I'll give that video a bit more of a watch tomorrow. it looks very interesting. The Cape is well worth the trip. You don't have to do any crazy stuff to get to the tip. Pundsand Bay is also amazing, we will show that next week. Safe travels. 👍🍻
