The need for Protestants to choose an alternative location for the holy places is understandable. Here’s another possibility of why the place is called Golgotha or Calvary (skull): When David killed Goliath (Gol) from Gath, he cut his head off with his own sword. Then took his head back to Jerusalem (outside the city because the head was too big to fit through the gates) and buried it. Eventually, Jesus was crucified over that place to fulfill the prophecy of he will crush your head (Gen 3:15). In doing so, Jesus is above any giant or mountain we can face and he is victorious! According to modern measurements, Goliath was 9’6” but in ancient time, regular humans were larger than we are today so this theory could be a possibility.

Golgotha is within a short walking distance of the garden and tomb there . Right by the road and you can see the “ skull” in the rocks. Outside the city. Again, only my opinion .
