I spy the Gilligan's Island radio in the first scene with Corey and Julia. Not the exact same prop but the same make and model. The little girls doll is a Baby Drowsy by Mattel. They had a Caucasian and African American version. This one of the earliest baby dolls to be made so that Black children could see themselves in a doll, just like Mattels Julia doll was one of the first Black fashion dolls.

In 1968, Diahann Carroll remarked: "At the moment we're presenting the white Negro. And he has very little Negroness." The Saturday Review's Robert Lewis Shayon wrote that Julia's "plush, suburban setting" was "a far, far cry from the bitter realities of Negro life in the urban ghetto, the pit of America's explosion potential." Julia received good ratings the first two seasons but dropped out of the top 30 most-watched shows during season 3. In 1971, the series was canceled, reportedly because of Carroll's and series creator and executive producer Hal Kanter's desire to work on other projects.

I was 7 years old when this series first aired. I grew up and for years wanted to be a nurse, just like Julia! It wasn’t until I was 14 and volunteering at a hospital that I realized nursing wasn’t the career for me.

I was about 9 years old when I saw Diahann Carroll and I had x-rated thoughts about her then.

The problem with the last episodes and why the ratings went down was the change in focus from a minority single mother trying to get by with her son over to an annoying bratty kid picking on Corey and Earl. What adult wants to see that?

The initial premise of this show was good. Unfortunately, it gradually succumbed to increasingly poor writing. This is one example. It’s particular preposterous since Betty Beaird still looks like a dike here and was one in real life. She was Lily Tomlin’s friend. I saw recently Betty Beaird died in 2022. That leaves the two kids and Fred Williamson as the only surviving members of the show. Marc Copage was never able to duplicate his success and now manages an apartment complex.

I loved this show as a small child! To this day, I think she was always the most beautiful actress. I am so happy after decades I am able to watch again.
