Makes it look so easy. The lawns look beautiful and even but you can see a few balls curve off a bit near the hoops (the small rush on yellow by blue at 3 back is an example). I love how the top players can read the lawn, judge the speed, draw and roll and allow so they don't get in trouble just like a good golfer when putting. I noticed this early on Robert did not get down and check each side of the balls when peeling, played with a lot of confidence and control.
I wonder why he didn't go for the black ball? Seems closer (and it's not as though red and yellow offered a double). Surely a player of his calibre would expect to hit the post from baulk >70% of the time?
Gentle shots are more likely to be faults. Many of the fault strokes would have worked if hit with prodigious force! The ball must jump high.
Not very fair as a quiz, as the deceptive real-time view is one the referee will not have. If you watch the mallet's path 'live', you can always compare the track of the ball afterwards. More great videos: thanks, Bob!
Hi Simon, I agree, real time can be very hard. With " hammer strokes" (especially in the hoop impaired stroke )I use as I've said in the text pdf attached, if the mallet is >45 degrees or so the multiple tap is clear because the ball hits into the ground part ads fractionally and then strikes again. Its a guide for referees to need to bear in mind what to look for! I have checked all these selected videos(slowed down to 1000 frames per second) to ensure accuracy, Bob's videos are ecacllent BUT he never comments shows videos without comment, and one makes up ones mind. Look at & then anlyse of the stroke - the APPROACH jump like in golf croquet we give a "bit "more latitude. Similarly the "pass roll stroke" is often a double tap, but condone most time. Remember Laws V7 state "if a fault is likely" ir t is deemed a FAULT. Thanks for comment Regards, James
If it's one clean shot why does it matter. It just causes arguments . If it's two deliberate hits fine but its impossible to tell most of the time. Problem the sport is dominated by pedants and savants and its off putting to normal people who dont live for over complicated rules.
That was very interesting, thanks 😊
What did the Ref come in for at 1hr 17mins?
I would love to know as well @JamesTemlett
@@bmcnewman Play not expeditious is my guess.
I play this shot quite a lot, especially toward the hoop. I must listen for the double tap in future.
Thank you John, a little latitude is given approaching the hoop, much less playing the hammer stroke when hoop impaired after running the hoop. Regards, James
Thanks so much James. I marvel at the skill producing such grace, a treat considering how people tend to slam the shots these days.
I was waiting for Billy Birminghams voice to say a few word about the game.
This is the end of Game 2, where after hitting in against the sextuple leave, Fletcher is faced with a moment of truth, it looks like he knows it is his chance for the title, but misses from A Baulk, and Bamford completes the triple peel for the win. The drama and pacing of this scattered work is wonderful. Again superb camera work slightly is undone by the lack of precision in the curation.
Yes, Game 3 for sure. The labelling error is unfortunate.
In fact this is Game 1. Fletcher hits in from Bamford's leave, peels Red through 10, 11 and 12 and pegs it out. Bamford falls at the first hurdle, when his split from Black at corner 4 goes out, not far from Blue in corner 1. Fletcher completes the three ball break and pegs out. Then Game 2 starts. Fletcher hits after Bamford's sextuple leave. Bamford hits in with Red, and the rest of the game is elsewhere. This excellent footage could benefit from more thoughtful curation, but it is a small deficiency, more than compensated by the superb camera work and insightful directorial decisions.
Robin Russell I wondered why the video length was so long.
This is superb footage, the best thing I have seen on the internet.
I tried the croquet dance once and bumped my head, that was enough for me, now I leave for the Pros.
I'm SO excited. This might prove to be the best _ _ _ _ ever.. don't you agree...... How do they get their shorts so clean and white, I wan'a know.
I WATCHED ALL TWENTY MINUTES OF IT....... oh wait, there's more......ohhh
Nice mallet dancing to be sure. They need young children to grab their balls, like tennis, forbid they must bend down to retrieve them. What athletes, the crowd was roaring......................................................................... while not comatose. And a nice place to nap if you bring the right chair
Only one thing better...... actually two. Jack in the Box Tacos.... two for a buck.....
This is confusing! Starts halfway through a game (which might be Game 3) in which Bamford is playing R/Y and is about to run 3B with Red and then set a diagonal spread. Fletcher is already on 4B with Black and Yellow is on H3 - possibly Fletcher peeled it through H1 and H2 to forestall any attempt at an SXP. Anyway Fletcher wins, to make it 2:1. Then we get most of a game (presumably Game 4) in which Bamford again plays R/Y and wins, even though Fletcher hits the tealady shot on Yellow from H1 into C3, and Bamford has to be content with 9 hoops and then 12 plus a TPP. In the final 10 minutes it changes abruptly into the early stages of yet one more game in which Bamford is now playing B/B. I would guess this is Game 5 - the decider.
Without a doubt this is the 3rd game, and is a fairly conventional 9 hoops, then an MSL, and then 12 hoops with a TPP. It is followed by the first few minutes of the 4th game.
Correction - what appears to be Game 2 ends abruptly at 1 hr 10 mins, just as Bamford is setting his diagonal spread. Both players on 4B with their leading ball, but Bamford is also on H3, his backward ball having been peeled through H1 and H2 by Fletcher.
This is fascinating - don't let the "3 hours" put you off. It is in fact 2 games, the first of which IS quite long (1 hr 48) but full of incident: a crosswiring at H1 which goes wrong, meaning that an intended SXP had to be abandoned in favour of a conventional 9 hoops and then a 'B' spread, which lets the opponent in, a 12 hoop turn with a TPO, a failed contact lift, and then a 3BB to peg-out. A 1 hr 10 min Game 2 follows this, and the numbering on the next in the sequence is clearly wrong; I think it should be Game 3.
What a pleasure to hear such knowledgeable and informative commentary from Chris Clarke!
Glad you enjoyed it.
6,000th viewer! do i get an ipad lol XD
absolutely mental!
INDUBIDably
very useful for demonstrating what a double tap is to those who cannot see the real time physics of it. Thank James.
This is the first-round match in which Alan Walsh upset #4 seed David Maugham, +17, -24tp, +26.
This Maugham vs Alan Walsh in the last 32 of the 2012 World Championships
Excellent -- Having two matches at once is great. I think this shows real potential for broadcasting team tests where multiple matches are generally always on.
